Wii U Firmware Update is live everywhere. Everyone calm down.

The highs and lows in this thread for me are ridiculous.

YOU CAN PLAY WII GAMES ON THE GAMEPAD?! THAT'S AMAZING

But you have to use a...Wiimote?

I am disappoint.

Doing my second playthrough of Skyward Sword on the GamePad confirmed!

Should look amazing. :)

good luck with that.

Wii games are so entwined with the wiimote I'm finding it odd people thought they could bypass all motion controls and use the gamepad.

As I read more and more I see it was a common expectation.

Well, without this option this feature went from great to pretty much worthless IMO.

It seems that now we can manage our Nintendo ID from browsers

I imagine the reason for no gamepad controls for off tv wii play is because you can't make motion controls work with a control stick and buttons :U

Games like Mario Galaxy and Donkey Kong had simple tacked on motion controls. Shouldn't be hard to make them work. IR can be replaced by touch screen, and waggle can be mapped to a button.

Of course Skyward Sword is going to need a Wiimote though.

I know the off-tv play solution for Wii games isn't exactly perfect, but does this not mean that, from a technical perspective, Nintendo could have future updates that enhance BC, such as pro controller support?

No one is commenting on this? I haven't plugged it into google translate or anything but this is clearly talking about accessing NN game... something (services?) from PCs and smartphones.

Given that they're not adverse to hacking through Wii mode video display to the gamepad, I am really surprised there's not classic controller emulation mapping for the buttons on the Wii U gamepad.

Sure, you cannot change Wii games that require a wii remote, but *plenty* of Wii games have CC and CC Pro support and can be played entirely with those.

Yeah, they could even emulate the IR pointer using the touch screen.

Would need to be patched wouldn't it?

Oh, yeah, and Smartphones too.

You can also save passwords in the browser.
There's also some web development stuff for the browser.

How is that going to work?

I think they will have "patches" to buy on the eshop for this and maybe HD textures/ upressing.

This. Not allowing the Gamepad to act as a Classic Controller is pretty much the most inane thing. They shouldn't have even bothered.

You think the Wii interprets the pad as a Wii remote? Like, wirelessly it identifies itself as a normal Wii remote with a CC plugged in?

It doesn't detect it at all. It's a different piece of hardware. It can't suddenly be spoofed for the Wii innards to think it's a remote.

Think they had said they intended to let people buy eShop games etc from a browser and so forth

What's there to manage?

Download complete. Firmware's been flashing for a while.

Pretty sure the gamepad has an accelerometer. It un-dims when I pick it up.

Also, I really hope this update doesn't break Wii homebrew. This had to require an update to the vWii software, right?

Seems like they added some cool stuff, but what's the point of adding the ability to play wii games on the gamepad if you have to use the wii mote to play?

Actually...that means around half of us we'll have to remember to switch sensor bar settings for those of us who have to keep it below the TV normally.

Minor annoyance, but again, hopes for future updates to automatically/temporarily set it to above TV when you can select GamePad only.

Of course it's possible. You can fix pretty much anything with coding.

I guess for Japan? Where apartments are small and multiple TVs are a rarity?

Exactly. A waste of their resources when there are so many other things needing doing. If they weren't going to do it properly, they needn't have bothered.

It's too hard to understand what it's saying.

Well, it was the only thing that came to mind for me, because I don't understand how the alternative is supposed to work. I guess the Gamepad acts like a tiny little TV? So you set it up on a desk in front of you and then use your Wiimote and Nunchuk in the cramped space between it and you? Seems extremely awkward. You'd have such a tiny little range of motion for any games that required the pointer.

Wow.... Wish I had my wiki. Got it stored while we do remodeling on the house. Can't wait till we move back in so I can get the update and play Zelda.

Guys, all this update does is have the console output a video signal to the pad and lights up the pad's IR strip.

It doesn't make the Wii innards suddenly detect the pad as if it were a Wii remote + CC. Because it's different hardware that doesn't work the same way and would probably cause all kinds of weirdness.

I mean, is it even the same type of bluetooth communication?

I cant imagine the numbers with the sensor bar below tv is anywhere close to half

I so would have finally opened my copy of The Last Story if I could play it on the Gamepad. I understand motion control games wouldn't work, but ones that supported the Classic or GCN controller would work just fine, I'd assume those would be fine. Oh well, maybe next time....

Seriously, this is heartbreakingly disappointing.

So can someone confirm the following:

I can output picture to tv via HDMI, whilst using the AV port to output audio only? Stereo only right? Or 5.1 too?

Can someone confirm stereo works with HDMI and Wii composite cable please?
