Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

Symmetrical design is so much better than two analogues at different positions.

Howver the buttons do look to be in a wierd position.

Yeah, don't know about those analog/button positions but it's a very sexy looking controller.

And yes Sunhi! Totally agree. Symmetrical analogue sticks is why I love my Sony controllers and could never get used to the 360 controller.

Couldnt they have just made a GC controller, added more triggers, pressable analog sticks, bigger d-pad and call it a day?

Wouldve been best controller had they done that.

I'm not exactly sure how this helps multiplatform titles since I'd assume they'd have to develop something to show up on the screen...

They don't have to. I thought someone within Nintendo had already said they weren't going to mandate that devs force second screen functionality, and this controller corroborates that statement.

I like it but the stick needs to be changed to be like the 360's. It's going to be uncomfortable as hell in its current placement.

Nintendo isn't mandating that anything has to show on the Wii Pad Screen. Remember, if you are streaming the whole game to the Pad, then you wouldn't have the benefit of a second screen...

Oh right, that's a great point. Forgot about that!

So does this mean that multiplatform games are just going to straight port over? That's... interesting

Yeah, that's interesting to me. It makes sense in the early gen, but later in the gen, when it's PS4/X720, the wiiu pad could be a differentiator.

They just HAD to Keep flip the button placements. I know it's inline with other Nintendo controllers but now that it's so similar to the 360 when prompted to hit A ill hit B. I just know it. :/

this is going to be horrible for games that focus a lot on face-buttons, especially fighting games. We don't press analog sticks as much as we press face buttons, but we'll see, I could be wrong. What worries me is that third party devs will decide to port their games and not use the touch screen on the wii u pad, making it worthless to buy on wii u when I can get it on a console I already own.

This...was unexpected.

Whats the consensus on the old one?

Looks great. Hopefully the position of the face buttons don't feel weird.

Also, from an ergonomic standpoint, the reason the X(sony)/A(microsoft) is for a primary action like jumping is that it's the one closest to where your finger is when it's on the thumbstick.

So are there going to be endless copy cat jokes about Nintendo and its ripoff now or is that reserved only for Sony?

I hope the Wiiupad is viable for longer sessions of said games, not a fan of buying extra controllers.

I sorta wish they had stuck with the GCN pad design (the form factor, not necessarily the button placement and all that).

I'm not sure about the right stick position, I will wait for some hands-on impressions. Oh, and this better have rumble.

Looks awesome. I hope we finally can bury the asymmetrical analog sticks, because they are a pain to deal with. Symmetry all the way!

This looks strange, I mean, it's pretty much the 360 controller but with right stick and buttons switched, plus some USB port...

Based on this having its own full suite of buttons to summon the OS overlay, I'd go with this scenario:

1. 3rd parties must have some basic Wii U padlet interface that defaults when padlet launches game.

2. All games can alternatively default to pure PS3/Xbox style interface when Pro controller launches game.

If that's so, this seems the best of all possible worlds, doesn't it? You could literally play Wii U games as if they used padlet screen integration, or as if the padlet didn't exist.

Placing the face buttons below the right analogue is stupid, really dumb.

The rest of the controller looks good, are those triggers I see?

I can see a crazy situation where you're using the upad as the screen but playing the game using this controller.

The button layout looks so weird but I'll have to see what it feels like before judging it. I hope that someone will figure out how to use it on the PC so you can use it as a 360 game pad. That will be godly.

I don't get the complaints about the right stick. It's not like your right thumb is any different from your left thumb. Plus MS probably has some sort of obscure patent on that sort of thing.

So this may be how they get their controller sales. If the pad is really only one per system these can be used for the 4 player controller sales/revenue that the Wii enjoyed.

This just confirms to me that multi-format games will do absolutely nothing with the sub-screen.

My only hope is Nintendo let any game use it.

I'm sure you need a gamepro blabla because the tablet will only have enough energy for few hours.

Part of me wonders if they had to arrange the sticks that way due to legal issues. Because if the buttons and right stick were flipped it would look almost exactly like an Xbox 360 controller. Or their just trying to keep parity with the Wii U Gamepad.

Yeah, that's interesting to me. It makes sense in the early gen, but later in the gen, when it's PS4/X720, the wiiu pad could be a differentiator.

Yea its fine right now, but if they are really underpowered against Sony/MS they lose their special feature. The big reason why the Wii was as good as it was is because devs didn't have a choice but to support it (for the most part).

I just find the big selling point of the WiiU being optional a peculiar choice for Nintendo
