So many unanswered questions, though. Will our consoles automatically apply this in December? Or does each Deluxe owner need to remember to go to the site and register? What happens with purchases made between Sunday and the start date? (That's answered, sorry.) For a selling point, this hasn't been adequately documented.

The credit thing is better than a stick in the eye, but if it's at all to blame for the NNID situation, then...couldn't we have talked about that stick, first?

This sort of post makes me regret not getting a Wii U at launch a little. If there wasn't this maelstrom of patchmageddon and interface slowness and system freezes and late features and so forth, this thread might have convinced me to go forward.

I'm really looking forward to the TVii impressions so that I can know if this'll be useful to me. SMB client and reasonably useful codec support would pretty much seal the deal, allowing me to set up videos on the sly while my friends are watching other shows, and getting rid of the network cable connection currently being used by my media player.

Not universally. Vita has higher resolution and a touchpad on the back, and both Vita and 3DS have better AR features on account of forward-facing camera. 3DS also has that 3D feature, which I personally still like a lot. That's not to say that they're "leaps and bounds better" than the GamePad, but there are certainly unique and arguably superior features all around.

Dude, stop thinking that you don't want one...You do, at some point in the system's life cycle, you will really want one....Just get it now, and have fun with it...Life is short.

My basic set from Gamestop just arrived, but I'm going to sell it because TRU put my deluxe order through. I really want to open it up, but now I have to wait!

Looking at the site... I'm not seeing anything that says it stacks (that is, if you earned $20 in credits can it be applied to one purchase) and the fact that you have to go to a seperate site to access it makes me wonder if redemption has to be done through it and only on specific titles.

Maybe I'm being a little paranoid here... but I might wait to buy anything digital till I know the point system will be worth it... at least as far as retail titles go (where I might just be better off waiting a little while)

The internet is for complaining. I can't imagine what I'd think of the Wii U if I didn't own one and I was only reading GAF. Yeah it has problems (slow OS), but the reality of this thing is amazing... the problems really don't matter to me. (I've never had a lock up or any kind of defect, though)

..I never said or implied it was 'trash'.
Didn't mean to put words in your mouth sorry. You just bolded paper Mario And great games...seemed to imply there bring an issue with considering the game to even be associated with anything great. I know the games rather maligned in general
So my opinion is probably not the most popular.

You need to add me as well. I tried last night to no avail.

Yeh, I woudn't call it great/on par with the other games he mentioned. I don't think it's a bad game by any means.

Whats your NNID? I must have it :D

Edit: Just realized you didn't get one >_<

Yeah. I'm a Nintard*, but dayone-ing consoles is just generally something I don't do even for much cheaper systems. Wii U is pretty cool, but $300 isn't worth spending on a console that is not quite bowling me over. I'm open to TVii
or Crytek or Cablevision
potentially changing that. Or even just a robust game ecosystem. There's one game out that I want
(Zombi U)
and one coming up
(Rayman)
that I really want, and I'm confident that within a year there will be more known on the horizon that'll tip my hand
(and those two games will no longer be fifty bucks, which helps)
.

Haha, tell that to the giant tree in my front yard that fell on my neighbor's house during the hurricane.

This doesn't appear to be true. The website uses a $59.99 price point as an example.

I'm happy to probably be wrong about that, then.

* we can say that about ourselves here without getting in trouble, right?

Even with the lockups it's an amazing console. It can only get better once they start pushing out firmware updates. My only gripe so far aside from the technical issues is how online is being handled. Sure I like Miiverse, but if they can get to the level of XBL in terms of communicating/playing games with friends then I will be happy.

I can see why you wouldn't want to get one day one, but let me tell you one thing. I was a huge doubter of Nintendoland until I got the Wii U. Probably the most fun I've had playing a local multiplayer game since the good old Gamecube days. NSMB U is awesome too :P

I really need a "porch gaming" update from Tom. I want to know if he dream has become a reality and how much of his place he had to cover in aluminium foil to get the signal to bounce all the way to his yard. :D

I just meant that it literally plays console games on a big, semi-good screen. Also has a much better browser than Vita, and the social interactions are better as well. It's a stupid comparison on my part obviously because the Vita doesnt require another piece of hardware just to function. I'm just saying that for people like me that many play handheld games at home, the Wii U is going to be a really great solution. I'm definitely far less interested in the 3DS I own now.

I haven't had any locks or freezes yet and I've put in a very good amount of hours into Nintendo Land. The OS seemed faster last night than it did the previous nights. Or maybe I'm just getting more use to it.

There's still a lot of things that only make "Nintendo sense" meaning they don't make sense to us normal people, like how adding friends using the friend app is like an extra 2 or 3 steps than just adding them via miiverse.

Something about WaraWara plaza seems odd too but I can't put my finger on it. It's weird how the two screens are different so you have to switch back and forth between them and it's been different every night I've had the system so as soon as I think I'm starting to figure it out it's different again.

There's also something about posting comments in Miiverse that is a little unsettling and archaic, Nintendo Land's community is probably around 20,000 posts by now so really no one is going to see any posts that were done even an hour or two ago. It's just a ticker that is never ending so there isn't really any sense of community. There's no "empathy" that Iwata was trying to stress during his Iwata asks: miiverse because you will only get so many reply's or 'yeahs' because your awesome post or beautiful drawing will be too far down the scroll list for more than 20 people to see.

It's missing something to make it feel like a community instead of just a bunch of randomness going on.

And maybe this is just launch honeymoon as well where everyone is going crazy and all and maybe it'll slow down or something. But there is just something missing about it.

Beat the normal Pikmin adventure last night with my wife and now started on the master quests in there. My wife loves that game and I can't get her to want to quit, heh. Also getting very close to beating the Donkey Kong game but don't know what to do on the slanted jumps in area 9 yet. Also got further in Fzero finally. My plaza is filling up with trophies. I wish there were more mini games in there though. I thought they said there would be more to use your coins on but so far it just seems like the one plinko game up top to get the trophies/decorations.

It'd be interesting to see if signal repeaters are a possibility...

Oh shit I didn't think about the Wii U not having Gamecube controller ports and I got rid of my classic controller... damn! I don't suppose you can use the Wii U Pro controller on VC games.

You need to add me as well. I tried last night to no avail.

I checked to see if I got any friend requests... none. So I go to invite you as a friend... tells me I need to setup my friend list. No idea what it means or how to do it. Been going through menus left and right and can't find it.

baconsammy is wrong. wara wara plaza has the most popular games on it regardless of your own activity.

Did they confirm that? When I log in, Sega Racing is on Wara Wara with 2 Miis in the area. When my wife logs in on her account that hasn't played Sega Racing, it's not on Wara Wara at all.

if it weren't for speed, the wiiu os would be far superior to the 360 dash. in terms of funcionality, accessibility, overall design, it's not even close.

of course, that's just my opinion, but i reeeeeally like the os. they just need to speed it up (which they've said they're workin on)

LOL no. The 360 doesnt force you to load a separate store to get to the games. It's all integrated into the UI. The UI's main issue on 360 isn't speed, it's ads. Ads everywhere. Otherwise it's faster, more customizable and makes it very obvious who on your friends list is on. The Wii U OS's problems go much deeper than the speed. It's not terrible, but its so far behind Sony/Microsoft at this point, which is probably the biggest disappointment to me about the Wii U. I expected it to take what the others did and improve upon it. Not make it worse.

It'd be interesting to see if signal repeaters are a possibility...

I'd definitely buy one along with a better battery.

Isn't this why you can follow people and have people follow you?

So glad there is finally a Wii-U OT... I pointed out that there was too many Wii-U threads, asked for an OT and been banned :(
I guess all these Wii-U threads and half of them being in a way or another about specs is awesome!
I don't want to derail so maybe I'll pm a mod to understand.

This said the OT is awesome, I can't wait to try this baby even if there is some choices made by Nintendo I really don't understand... Also third party support is kinda disapointing even if it's launch games (and ports)
At least I know I'll enjoy Nintendo games and I still have good hope for great indie support on eShop and some nice surprises with the homebrew community :p

Press home and click on your friends list. It'll take you through a quick set up. After that find me on miiverse and request me.

Nintendo needs to release a handheld with exactly the same OS and Miiverse and has account linking so you can play select games on both systems.

A thought... would turning the Wii U into a remote server for "Off-TV" games be possible? Say, take a game like AC III, in the disc drive or installed, and serve it to you over the internet to your handheld? Would the lag from input & output be too much for such an idea?

(of course, a handheld with 6 face buttons, 4 shoulder, and 2 analog sticks would be something else.)

I'm sure it's possible considering PSP remote play did that many years ago. But yeah, lag's probably gonna be a bitch.

Porch gaming is alive and well here! I played Mario a bit on the porch with my headphones on. That said, the porch is a mere 15 feet from the console.

I think my next item to be purchased has to be a halfway decent chair; the small bench I have out there sucks!

not sure exactly the methodology, but i confirmed that all my wara wara plaza apps were tops in miiverse and i posted only in nintendoland and mario.

Oh, I purposefully didn't mention actual portability features when I was comparing, because I understood you were talking in the context of only playing from your bed. That's totally fine. (edit: Oh, yeah, the browser as shown on youtube vids looks pristine, and I haven't even seen the gamepad part of it in action yet!)

I would note, though, that the best handheld games tend to be made for handheld gaming. Console ports are often seen as impractical when played in the palm of your hand, since they are explicitly designed for larger screens. It is interesting that this sort of perspective has not been brought up with respect to Wii U off-screen play.

That said, my bathroom is ready.

It'd be interesting to see if signal repeaters are a possibility...

Hmm, that might lead to further delay of the signal. If the Wii U and GamePad interaction is set up to only work if the latency of a full frame is under a certain threshold (for example, 16ms), then a repeater could actually be worse. Radio-reflective material at strategic locations might be the most optimal solution.

That said, it would be rather crazy and great if I could VPN my gameplay from work. :O

That totally rocks. The part about it working, not the part about the bench.

Just got my Wii U deluxe unboxed and turned on.

Blue Light of Death on the first turn-on. Didn't even get to a loading screen. Pre-bricked, lmao

Returning to Best Buy for a cash refund and will officially sit this crap console out until another hardware revision. I don't really care until Bayonetta 2 / Smash anyway, just had nostalgic launch fever.

Finished downloading now 90% updating

Only took 2 days, sigh

That sucks, isn't the blue light the pier button?

There's such an enormous disconnect between how I feel about this system perusing miiverse and talking with ppl about games there and the GAF hate machine. Reading gaf is just depressing now. This thread seems to have been relatively spared at least.

Gaf is in the grips of schadenfreude fever.

If you enjoy it, good. I do. No need to post on GAF when I can post on Miiverse and play games I enjoy. GAF loves to hate, especially when it comes to tech specs.

What made you think I had any interest in what you thought? Wii U OS>>>360 Dash. Easily. I'd go into further detail, but it's completely wasted on you. Just sell your wii u and bugger off. You'll be much happier that way, I promise you.

Mostly because the same type of people posting on miiverse are posting on this thread ;)

Haters gonna hate and miiverse is simply awesome. Wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I have and definitely think it's the best feature of the system so far.

Man I had no lock ups during the first four or five hours of play, but just got two lock-ups in 15 minutes while playing NSMBU... UGH. Had to unplug the system both times... what really made it frustrating was how close together the lockups were, compounded by waiting on the slow OS. This better not be a super frequent thing :/ One time it locked up while it was saving after beating a castle... glad nothing got corrupted or anything.

That's really the only bad thing I have to say about the Wii U so far. I don't play in long enough chunks of time often enough for the controller's battery life to bother me since I just sit on the dock when I'm done. I won't really mind plugging the controller in occasionally and playing wired if I do play for several hours at once or forget to dock it... gotta play wired every once in a while with the PS360 as well and it doesn't bother me when I do.

I'm really, really impressed with Miiverse. I really hope Nintendo keeps updating and expanding its functionality, because it's a really cool little service. I had a lot of fun reading things and liking posts, and it was fun seeing people respond to and like your posts as well. I wish there was a way to filter between drawings and text posts, however. All the popular top posts are drawings, but I'd like to see what the most popular comments have been as well.

Really pleased with everything about the Wii U so far. As long as they get some of these kinks ironed out a little by 2013, I'll be happy.

Most of the complaints are valid though, but some stuff like account transfers don't exactly have immediate impact for people who have the system right now. The various information about the actual operation of the console hardware and software just helps people to decide whether they want to get it at launch or wait a while until features are added or improved.

Question, I saw this mentioned earlier... by any chance do you have an SD card or USB hard drive plugged in?

Wouldn't want people with opinions different than your own muddying the waters, right? It's odd how resistant you are to anyone that has anything negative to say about the Wii U. Why is that? Even Nintendo has acknowledged several of the issues people are seeing. If they can, surely you can too.

He's made it clear numerous times that he's not interested in hearing dissenting opinions. /shrug

Nintendoland and Mario are great on the pad. Sega Racing, not so much. So it will be a game-by-game thing. I havent tried anything else to comment. Other than the browser, which I think is much better looking on the pad than on the TV.
