Has anyone else noticed the GamePad and TV audio harmonize on the Wii menus? Here's what I mean

http://youtu.be/ObaIXnKIPao

That's such a cool, but tiny little detail. Reminds me of the GameCube's opening being the same as the Famicom. Small touches and that

Yeah I thought that was great while messing with the menu.

Wait, so do Wii games look any better at all? Or just the same?

They look a tad bit better. Its nothing to get excited over though. Things look just abit clearer/sharper.

So how does the home screen work? Isn't it supposed to show games and stuff the community likes? Mine still shows the base icons plus all the Miis in the area are "NINTENDO"

Mine is like this, too. I don't have any random Miis on mine. Just Nintendo's Miis.

And I'm glad I was able to get my Wii U early enough to snag the ID Lucent before someone could take it. If it wasn't available, I was gonna go with LucentU =p

Without discounting the issues plaguing the console's launch, I have to admit that none of those were particularly evident during my first day with the system. After standing outside for an hour with the kind grandmother in front of me, I walked away with a system that provided an enjoyable hour of tinkering around with the UI and Nintendo Land and then a great time playing with four friends for a few hours this afternoon. At no point during that playtime did any of those issues wreak havoc: Nintendo Land handles the gamepad integration beautifully, and also allows it to be switched between players with great efficiency. Playing games like Mario Chase/Luigi's Mansion/Animal Crossing with the Gamepad is made more enjoyable because you don't have to wait very long between rounds, and can swap without feeling like the gameplay environment is changing. It's the same kind of social gaming environment the Wii offered back in 2006, and I definitely had a sense of deja vu based on my first days with that console.

That said, I'm treating this console in a very specific way. I don't have time for much single player gaming, so I only picked up Nintendo Land. I have the other consoles, so I'm not expecting the system to provide a pipeline to feature-rich third party titles. I didn't really have any expectations for the Wii U: I made my decision to purchase just this week, and it was more out of curiosity than out of extreme excitement. I knew I would eventually buy the new Nintendo console, and cannot imagine myself stopping this tradition at any point in the near future, but early adoption was more to be a part of the conversation than to fulfill my deepest gaming desires.

It's creating a very weird launch climate, though. The system has been sold as a new way to play, pitched as both a new interface for gaming and the "one box" living room solution all console manufacturers are trying to sell. And yet it arrives without that "one box" solution properly operational, and with a host of technical/software issues that work against its gaming capacity beyond Nintendo's own titles. I can totally see why Nintendo is losing the PR war on NeoGAF, in other words, but I can also see why it didn't come close to losing the PR war with the less industry savvy gamers who came over this afternoon. While I can't possibly speak to longevity, these people were sold on what the console could offer based on sitting down and playing the games. If Nintendo sells enough people in that environment, I'm not sure the other factors will even matter.

Bottom line: from lining up at dawn to frantically tossing away candy to escape the incoming guards, I had fun today. It wasn't $370 of fun just yet, I will grant you that, but nothing I've seen so far suggests that kind of apocalyptic disaster being depicted elsewhere. A fine launch day, on the whole.

I'm really quite impressed by the hardware. The ergonomics are great, for one. What really surprises me is how responsive the Gamepad is. I didn't expect aiming to be so fluid with the gamepad, considering it's not all that amazing with the 3DS. No lag whatsoever. I expect some great things from this system.

The system UI is too confusing, however. Menu items also take far too long to load.

Yup just looked at the plastic and its all jaggy. Fuckin bullshit, of course the console is sold out so I'm fucked. Will Nintendo replace controllers.

Nintendo has the best customer service I have ever dealt with.

I have to call BS on the "unresponsive gamepad" complaints.

I own a 3DS and a DS, I was expecting the responsiveness to be the same as that but it feels better to me.

I'm probably one of the most input lag sensitive people on GAF. The Gamepad is incredibly responsive.

I freaking love Nintendo Land. Now they just need an IRL Nintendo Land.

This. It's insanely fun. The three chase games are so fun that we spent a good 3-4 hours playing just those three and passing the gamepad and controllers around. Playing as the ghost in Luigi's Mansion is so freak'n fun.

I'm glad Nintendoland was included with the Deluxe. I feel like it should've been included with every system because it uses the gamepad in every way. And the way it's presented is really nice. I can't help but feel a sense of awe as I see Nintendo in HD now.

I think one of you are talking about the responsiveness of the touchscreen itself, and the other about input lag.

Am I mistaken?

I am infatuated with Miiverse. Fuck videogames, this is the Wii U's killer app.

I look at all these other negative topics, and I don't know. I get and acknowledge there are some crappy things. Some things could have been handled better. Some of these ports are apparently a joke.

But every second I've spent with this thing so far has been absolutely worth the wait.

I haven't been able to enter Miivers ( I think). Actually, I'm a little confused on the differance between this, Wara Wara, and the bootup plaza.

Wii u has given me a roller coaster ride of emotions today but in the end I'm left with the opinion that the wii u itself is cool as hell it just needs some real games designed for it

Please add overscan compensation in the next patch please. My tv sucks and won't display it correctly via HDMI 720p on a 768p set. Display says its 720p but it stretched the image to 768p rez.
Man it would be badass if ANY console did this on an OS level.

I believe what you want exists, but it's hidden in the wrong place. Go into Miiverse, User Menu, Settings/Other, Miiverse Settings. At the very bottom is an option called "Screen Size".

Yeah, if anything I'd say it's helped me realize that the TV in the backroom which I plugged the console into has some input lag itself, since I have a second screen showing the same screen and playing the same audio for reference. TV audio seems to be coming after the audio from the pad. And of course, there's no "Game Mode" that I can find in the menus.

Oh, and some overscan, which I can work around in the eShop, but not any other part of the OS. (Unless Dreamwriter up there is right on the money; not in the mood to check right now, though.)

I played Metroid Blast for a good two hours, the remixed music made me cry tears of joy. Getting new items to decorate the park is great.

I played Nintendoland 5 players today with a mix of gamers and non-gamers. Had a blast. Wii U multiplayer delivers, specially when playing that goddam berry pickup game and Luigi's Mansion.

I dunno if it's random, but the first thing I earned was a pot that I can break repeatedly and it'll just magically repair itself. lol the game has some weird prizes. And I like hopping on the train. It's crazy.

I only played the game where you throw shurikens once, but I think I need more practice. Seems like I don't quite got the feel for throwing those stars. That and I was kind of worried about scratching the screen as I don't have a protector on it yet.

You mean the candy in the Animal Crossing game? Yeah, those two are my favorite so far. Had my friends busting out laughing as I was one of the animals eating candy and whenever one of the guys would chase me I'd run and "vomit" out the candy while making vomit sounds so I could make myself lighter and run faster. With three people, we ended up having to try to get as much candy off the trees as possible first and THEN eat. The ghost one you really need teamwork in, too. If someone gets caught, we have one person flash their light around while the other heals.

The only thing that would make Nintendoland better I guess is bots (for when you wanna play but have nobody to play with) and online mp.

Is anyone else's console freezing randomly? I've had this happen to me at least 4 times. I'll have to pull the power cord out of the back of the unit to turn it off. Error 150-1039, but there isn't any documentation about it on Nintendo's website

I must say, I'm really loving NSMBU. I've ragged on the art style of NSMB before, but I'm digging this a lot. Some areas look really stunning.

I'm working on transferring my Wii data onto my Wii U. I notice the sensor bar works on the Wii, even though it's connected to the Wii U.

mindblown.

Jesus the Update is taking foreverrrrrr... How big is this damn Patch?

Odd. It only took me about an hour to download it. And so far I have been lucky. I haven't had any issues with my Wii U *knocks on wood*. But that's been me with all my consoles so far. My first 360 lasted almost 2 years before it gave up (and it was a launch console).

I've been looking everywhere, but I can't find out how to manually set a Mii to auto-login when booting up the system. I know it gave me the option the moment I created a second Mii, but I can't find it anymore. Anyone know where it is?

Should be under user profile I think?

For people who have done Wii >Wii U transfers, can you pick and choose what you want to transfer like 3DS or is it all or nothing?

Sensor bar doesn't actually transmit any data

Turn it off and back on. When I turned it back on, it made me log in and then asked if I wanted it to remember the password, then asked if this was the default login.

Hmm...it doesn't ask me for the password anymore. But I was hoping there was a way to bypass selecting my Mii and just going straight to the menu since I only have one Mii.
