Being able to check locations on the go and setting waypoints without having to open up the menus all the time will be a godsend.

I'm freaking pumped for Wii U, new hardware launches are always fun and Nintendo titles in HD are going to be great to see and play.

Watching this board during my ban was excruciating. It's like a whole swarm of juniors just came pouring out of the woodwork. Not that that juniors are inherently poor posters, I was a junior not too long ago myself, but there does seem to be a huge influx out of nowhere.

First is that people on gaf tend to passionately believe that their personal tastes and preferences regarding their gaming hobby is truly indicative of the whims of the industry as a whole. The second is that most people will also tend to believe whatever the hell they want to believe, going so far as clinging to whatever baseless scraps and offhand comments they can in order to continue holding fast to their gaming worldview. Some even selectively misconstrue existing info to argue on behalf of a specific company while being completely oblivious to what they're doing. And I'm not saying this in order to imply this thread is some bastion of reason and logic either.

But getting back on topic, what is the bare minimum it would take for you guys and gals to be there on day 1 for the Wii U? What are your potential deal breakers? Is there anything that has to be there in order to convince you to pick it up this year?

For me, I only buy maybe 1 or 2 games a year, so it would have to have some really, really good games to justify a $350 price, give or take $100, plus $60 for a game. A bit of a tangent: GAF and other websites like to make fun of ratings, like 9 vs. 9.5, and they tout the "buy," "rent," or "don't buy" type ratings, but since I only buy a couple games a year, I only buy the best of the best. I had FFXIII pre-ordered until reviews started saying it was super linear and had no towns. Games that are worth the money to the general community are just not worth it to me. The rating system isn't broken, it's just more specific than YOU need, but not me. I don't buy 8.5-rated games unless I REALLY like the series or genre, because there are too many better games out there for me to pick my 1 or 2 games from. And I'm glad reviews let me get a general idea of what games REALLY excelled because they're so fine-tuned.

So my point is, it's gotta have a game worthy of being called "best of the best" for me to buy at launch.

Either that, or Smash, which won't happen for 2 or 3 more years.

Yeah, we're already seeing that with Ninja Gaiden 3. We think 3rd-party excuses for not making games on Nintendo systems are bad? GAF excuses for why million-selling franchises suddenly suck once they hit a Nintendo console are 100 times worse. It'll be Resident Evil GCN exclusivity all over again, only with even MORE franchises.
Though, in fairness to the NG3 hate, the game HAS changed due to the lack of Itagaki, but it still looks like a lot of fun.
 
I would be so happy if there is a Mario or Zelda or Metroid game at launch. The only 1 of the 3 that is likely is Mario since SS just came out and Metroid wont sell consoles. But I remember playing through TP when I got my Wii and it was great having a big title to play on the new console on day one.
 
So still no word on whether or not they will have their own trophy/achievement system? I hope so. I am not a trophy whore, I ignore it for a lot of games, but for games that I truly enjoy/love, it just adds to the longevity of the title. Would be great to have for mario/zelda/etc... games. Fits them perfectly.
 
I just want Nintendo release at least one more game with Wiimote+ support, I mean SS was big spoiler for what this technology was capable of with good execution =/

I think they'll keep it as an alternate control scheme within the options for other games. Obviously that's only under the assumption that they plan to continue to support it at all.

I don't understand how that has anything to do with it. Technology gets cheaper as time goes on. We aren't going to be getting a console that has todays hardware in it (or rather tomorrows should I say). There is no reason a $299 price tag would show as a sign of weakness. If anything, Sony proved during the PS3's launch that higher price tags, despite superior tech are worse than lower price tags with weaker yet comparable tech.

I think it's assumed to be present, given that Accomplishments made it to Mii Plaza on 3DS with practically NO fanfare. When Nintendo includes something and doesn't talk about it, it usually means that the feature is half of the implementation they actually want to achieve.

The trick is HOW they plan to implement it. I said it earlier in the thread, but I want more than just a scorecard. Give me trinkets for my Mii or SOMETHING. I think it's a good idea for a lot of different reasons.

For example, if I am playing... oh, I dunno.... Star Fox on my WiiU and I get an Accomplishment, give me an Arwing headset hat for my Mii. This way, if Nintendo implements a way to sync Mii content between 3DS and WiiU, I can StreetPass that Mii and people will go "oh cool, where's that headset from?" and work as free viral marketing for the game. Just as one good way to utilize an Accomplishment system. I'm sure there are others you guys could come up with.

Anyone else plans to buy the Wii U just because they are fucking desperate for a new console ? I couldn't care less whether it's the 720, the ps4 or the Wii U. I am not sold on the Wii U due to the games of the fact that it's Nintendo. I'm buying it because I am sick of playing on 2005-2006 hardware and I want a new fucking toy. I already have a kick ass computer but it's just not the same. I use my computers for RTS, Turn-Based and indie games. Other than work, that's pretty much it. I like having that small gaming box in front of my tv with a library of games on its side. I know this isn't rational. But it's just the way I feel.

So shut up and take my money, whoever the fuck you are.

Wasn't the game in a pre-alpha stage at E3 2011? It looked very unimpressive anyway. And with reports of "final" Wii U SDK's distributed to developers early this year, would it be enough time for Ubisoft to optimize the whole shebang come launch day? Now Far Cry 3 I assume they could port very easily though.

It probably depends on how they implement Wii b/c. If they do it in software then there shouldn't be any reason why not. If it's hardware-based though, the U-pad will probably be locked out the same way all Wii-specific stuff was locked out when playing GC games on the Wii (which was a shame, because I would have loved to use the CC for some games, and from the triggers it's obvious that the pad was designed with the ability to play GC games in mind.)

I hope they don't pull a "Red steel" with that - a.k.a. a rushed launch-game release that doesn't live up to everybody's expectations - I like the idea of a science-fiction game taking place in London has some potential, but maybe they should better take their time this time around.

If they end up packing a remote and nunchuck in the box (I hope they do), then I imagine they'll continue to support it. Having options never hurts.

I would assume that buy the time the Wii U comes out, it will have had a much longer dev cycle than red steel did. They started development on it early last year didnt they? Assuming the Wii U doesn't ship till November, they probably get at least an 18 month cycle which is about par for the course when it comes to launch titles.

It was being developed as a PS360 title before being shifted to Wii U, so it may even have had more development time than that.

Is this level of belligerence and ignorance serious or sarcastic? I have to know that you've accepted the point that was made before I commit you to the ignore list or not. I try to be fair about these things.
 
I love Nintendo to death, i grew up with the NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube, they are the Disney of the games industry to me with the strength of their characters and charm.

I would love the new console to be named 'Nintendo Wii Universe', it would have the huge brand of 'Wii' in it and since it will be able to play NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube games from the Online store and Wii games from Disc it really would play anything from the home console Universe.

I wonder if that tablet will end up being competition to the 3DS if you can use it as a portable gaming devise esp if they include GB, GBA and DS games as downloadable products ?.

I don't really care how powerful the hardware looks on paper or how many third party games it gets as like a lot of current 360 owners i will buy the next Xbox to continue to play online with my friends and continue my Achievements, the Wii U for me is all about the Exclusives.

If we get Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Starfox, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Pikman, Waverace, Smash Bros and F-Zero running at full HD while @ 60 FPS and a decent online system for MP then i will be more than happy, even if the actual graphics are just a small upgrade from PS3 / 360.

Change the name Nintendo to avoid the mistakes of the 3DS, price it at under $300 / £300 and have at least two amazing exclusives at launch and they will sell like hot cakes.

I just decided to wait for a 3DS until after E3 as i don't want to buy one in Feb then they announce a slim version with two analogue sticks and improved 3D for a cheaper price in June.

Can't wait for this E3 !.

I would love it if game boxes came with reversibile covers that had simpler/sexier designs like these. They could make it a promotional thing; if you bought the game around launch the special cover would be included.

Anyway, I've been imagining my future with the Wii U and I couldn't help but ask myself: How would I have reacted to the Wii U if, say, I was around 8-12 years old? This made me come to realize that, for some middle-class little kids (like I was/am), the Wii U might seem like the best thing ever. If I was an 8-12 year old kid, I don't think I would have any type of tablet computer because my parents wouldn't trust me with one. They would, however, trust me with a game console. I am also pretty sure that my parents would be constantly nagging at me to let them watch the television (that is, if there is one main TV). The Wii U will give young kids a chance to have their own "tablet" and it will also provide a very revolutionary feature of making a console game portable. Those two things alone, I believe, would make a younger version of me EXTREMELY happy!

So GAF, how do you think you would have reacted to the Wii U had you been introduced to it as a child?
 
Really want the cases to be colored like NSMBWii and have the higher rated games have black cases in the other regions, they look so damn cool.

Also, those cases would look cooler if the Wii U had the grey and blue logo painted into the embossed logo, if you get what I mean.

I like this idea a lot, but think it should be an accessory for your Mii oly if you "platinum" a game. I don't think third party developers are going to come up with new accessories for every single achievement. It also may become over saturated by doing so. BUT, having a Mii decked out with an awesome Samus arm-gun showing you beat the hell out of Metroid? Awesome. Bragging rights you can show to the world!

And man, achievement whores would go nuts over this, it's... Tangible, in a way.

Actually, I like this idea (and I hate achievements). Imagine, Mario's hat, or Peach's umbrella, Starfox's boots, Olimar's helmet, Donkey Kong's tie, Link's cap and so on and rewards for completing a game/doing something within a game. Over-do it and it would become blase, but done right and it could be a great incentive.

My idea has always been to ditch traditional achievements and worthless gamer points and have in game challenged award you coins which you can use to purchase accessories, home screen backgrounds, etc. on a virtual digital-item store. They could even let people buy certain accessories for real money if they want.

Thank you. Yeah, more games should come with an alternate cover. I'm actually really surprised that NoA is including a reversible cover with Xenoblade.

I agree. I had not thought about it that way. Although I know lots of kids with ipods and such, it's still not completely dominated that demographic and this is a good time for Nintendo to get their foot in there.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Imagine defeating Ganon and unlocking the Master Sword to show off to the world. That's so much cooler than a useless 'gamer score'.

that's why I think trophies > achievements. To me numbers aren't so satisfying but seeing dat goddamn platinum which is sometimes followed by a cool title. Feels good. Would be awesome if they took it one step further and made it game specific like you guys are saying.
 
I agree with you guys, but I think you're underestimating how many people love stroking their e-peen and showing off that gamerscore.

Knowing Nintendo, it'll be something totally different and unexpected.

As time goes on inflation takes place and the level of power you can achieve at $299 relative to what is considered top notch technology goes down. Yes, at $299 any machine released is going to smoke a $299 machine from any other period in history, but such a device will be considered "weaker" in comparison to what is commonly acceptable in that day and age than ever before (as $299 ten years ago is effectively more valuable, and 10 years before that even more so). $299 is a strong indicator that the components would be comparably "weak" while a price tag of $350 or $400 would give more confidence to more powerful innards given that the component costs of the tablet controller will eat away at the BOM. Price can give a hint at a products power, it is not a simple algebraic formula of course, but $299 would be a worrisome number to many people. As would $99. As would $50.
