Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Yeah but there is GDC. We're sure to get something then, none of the huge stuff...but something. GDC is in march, march 3-5 I think? Or 5-7. Something like that.

Publishers would be pretty happy with the proposed DLC cards.

I mean if publishers could simply use the cards as a one time downloadable card for larger games, i could see that becoming a norm for retail. This'd cut out a large chunk of the used-game market for sure but keep it going on in some form.

Definitely a win/win situation for publishers and for consumers in the used game market if they have to compete for the sales moreso than atm.

I mean paying $90AUD for MW3 used is a complete joke. Anything that can keep the two in healthy competition is good in my books.

My guess is:
More info on known 3DS line-up for FY2013 (Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Tennis, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario).
Announcement/shots of Mario 2D or Zelda 3DS. Maybe a surprise game.
Wii U services and features. No games, screens or videos.

Probably already stated, but...

When they say digital distro of boxed retail, do they mean a downloadable version of that game, or you can buy a physical copy directly from the system and have it shipped to you?

Even though I'm all up for digital version of retail releases, this can be very dangerous.

If you have both digital and retail releases available on the same day, then retailers will be pissed when the digital version eats a chunk of their sales.

If you price both digital and retail releases the same (to keep it equal), then consumers will complain then that there's really no advantage in having a digital version, but if it's priced lower (which it should since they are not spending money on packaging or transportation), then retailers will complain that customers will avoid paying for the more expensive version.

And finally, if they take the path of offering the digital version months after the game is no longer being sold in stores (which is what I think they should do), then a lot of people will just wait for the lower-priced digital version. Sort of like how a lot of people wait for retail games to drop in price before they buy it and that will, again, be a negative for retailers.

I assure you, Orange Cube looks PIMP in real life. I know, I own one ;)

Parents no longer have to run around town looking for a copy of a sold out game anymore during the holidays.

I did too!

*brofist*

Gave it to my niece a few years later. Had no cash, wasn't really playing it, my bro told me I could borrow his whenever something came out, and my niece really wanted one of the Sims games.

I don't see how this is a problem for consumers.

Publishers are more likely to lessen the price for the downloadable versions to have more quality control methods in releasing games digitally ie. knowing how many units sold/shipped/unused.

The only real downside for consumers is the download limits on your home internet plan if you choose to only buy the card downloadable versions. This of course omits that there are still disc versions that there still should be for maximum market penetration. In the end it's really a non issue and more up to the consumer's choice so everyone's a winner from what i can see.

Edit: Your argument is also supposing that it's a one time download. Xbox live allows for multiple download of the same item, so i don't see Nintendo going against that when they are trying to attract that same userbase. (note: unsure of PSN multiple downloads, have yet to need to)

Digital is the future. The percentage of this market increases every year.

Gamestop and think like that wll have to adapt, because at some point they will become irrelevant.

It's amazing how much hype this system has managed to generate in the last few days. We went from being actively antipathetic to openly excited about its possibilities.

Bring on E3 Nintendo. Next generation is yours for the taking, if you play your cards right.

It's a developer conference first and foremost, so forget the first point. The third one is the most likely, and considering developers probably care, I wouldn't be totally surprised if they showed a new techdemo or something.

I'm wondering something I've wondered for a long time:

Why exactly isn't it possible with four controllers like every other consoles?

my guess is that its not possible to STREAM to all controllers at once due to CPU limitations but other controller inputs (buttons, d-pad, slide pads, etc.) should work just fine.

From my limited understanding....

If you have 4 controllers + the main display, you have to pump out 5 sets of the video. Assuming all the displays will be different (not all that much point otherwise) that would mean the system trying to, effectively process the game 5 times.
That's a lot of power needed.
Just look at the drop in quality when you do spilt screen on the 360

Both actually. Buy a Wiimote++, place it next to your Wii U, press the sync button, it automatically detects the device, and it syncs.

but..uhm...that's exactly what i do when I sync a new Wiimote with my Wii. I place it next to the Wii, press the sync button and it detects the device and syncs it.

I still don't get that NFC stuff. So you need a chip to detect it?
Isn't it sort of expensive and "over the top" to put a chip in every Pokemon card and i.e. magazines? Wouldn't it be way easier and cheaper to use the QR codes like the 3DS?
I mean the Wii U-mote has cameras too.

on the subject of possible Wii U games, anyone remember when REsident Evil 6 showed up on some random actor's resume' about 3 or so months ago? There were several titles listed that seemed to confirm that the RE6 listing was nothing but a troll. The list of his work quickly disappeared from his site. One of the titles I thought was a red flag was Earth Defense Force published by Nintendo. I know Sandlot was working on a new EDF announced at TGS last year. I must say I'd welcome a Battalion Wars style EDF with RTS style unit management. Could be something, could be nothing....but hey its all I got

Oh, so you can still use four controllers, but only one can use the screen?

That's fine then.

no, I don't think that's right. my best guess is that the reason they haven't talked about using four controllers at once is because they don't want people getting the idea that the console can stream to four screens. as of right now Nintendo is still saying only one controller is possible although if you're doing multiplayer a wiimote should work in the stead of multiple upads as we saw at some e3 tech demos.

If the system is renamed I think it will happen at GDC along with information about collaborations and more system OS features and functions.

What I want to see is reaching maximum number of controllers. I assume for bluetooth is 7 and probably thats the reason the nunchucks and other perpherals were wired. So I would like to see 7 or more players(put 2 bluetooth receivers?) in local multiplayers. Best example would be sports games.
Wiimotes ,wii pads whatever

P.S. NFC? EXCIIIIIITE

Well a good number of developers can't properly design a game for 4 Wii controllers, I doubt Nintendo wants developers rushing to put out half-assed attempts to use multiple Wii U controllers. Maybe after 2 years, Nintendo will ahve "magically" found a solution that allows multiple controllers.

I want to know if you will be able to use the upad as a mini screen to play Wii games, the thing already had a sensor bar system on it so...

There's an optimal distance to play Wii games, at that distance the 6'' screen would be very uncomfortable for the player to track the game actions.

The sensor bar on the controller is much smaller, which makes the optimal distance shorter as well.
I'm pretty sure the controller will come with a stand of some sort, which by the way would make playing Wii games pretty straightforward if they plan to do it.

Nintendo should clarify the Wii U controls at GDC. How many Upads will be able to be used with the system? Will the Wiimote be a primary control option for the Wii U (is it included in the box)? Maybe showcase a game with it or something.

Metroid Prime 3 Corruption: Old Control Scheme Edition.

A stand is a most for this controller, honestly charging the controller with a cable wouldn't be so elegant. Also a stand would make a lot of sense for something like the Wii connect 24. It would be great to have the system on stand by an receive alerts through the controller screen while it's on the stand. If the camera on the WiiU con is good enough it could detect motion in the room and then automatically turn on the screen.

The Wiiremote should be included in the box for the asymmetrical style of gameplay Nintendo seems to be pushing.

Looking at the WiiU controller it's too bad Nintendo is making an oversight yet again. It would be a perfect time to introduce modular thumbsticks, face buttons and Dpad. It has too big of a set advantages for Nintendo to ignore.

Agreed. After the 3DS cradle (which is surprisingly comfortable), I honestly expect them to do something similar.

Agreed 100%.

Thinking about Nintendo's partnership with Traveller's Tales for Lego City Stories and the newly announced NFC feature, I wonder if there might actually be a Nintendo/ Lego cooperation. Lego could include special NFC bricks with their models that contain the model itself, which could then be used to import that model into Lego City Stories.
