Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

I really don't see how adding 3D to the tablet would really add anything to the system. You're not going to use it in one player games that where the tablet is an inventory screen or map. It would just be used so infrequently that I don't see it as a necessary cost adding feature.

Exactly, and at the viewing angle many would use the tablet at (say, glancing down for a map or whatever), the 3D wouldn't work anyway. It'd be impractical.

I think cloud storage is a given for the system and I'd actually be shocked if it wasn't announced by Nintendo.

I don't know how practical this would be but what about games from the Wii-U being streamed to the 3DS to be played but they can in fact be played in 3D?

Or does the touch tablet controller feature a 3D screen slider ala the 3DS where you will have the option of streaming games from the Wii U to the controller to play in 3D? Or can the touch screen controller interface with the 3DS to play 3D games between them?

I had read rumors as well that Nintendo was sitting on one or more "secrets" that the system was capable of doing and I swear 3D was brought up.

I'd assume that if the 3DS were used in that manner, the stream would not be in 3D.

And considering how tight-lipped they've been, I would definitely expect there to be more than one secret for them to reveal.

I may be in the minority here, but I don't think there are any big "WHOA" surprises in store for us in regards to the Wii U. I'm chalking the Wii U silence up as Nintendo still being in damage control mode for the 3DS.

I think you are too. :)

They've gotten the 3DS situation well under control by now and expect the hardware to be profitable again before the end of the calendar year.

Oh god, I've only just noticed you changed your avatar, bgassassin... I don't like it, change it back! :(

Anyway, the 3DS was slow to get started, but Nintendo have it under control now, and it's seeing great success.

Naww I think they are trying to blow people away at E3. I make fun of Nintendo at any given opportunity but I think they're cooking up shit to wow people. So much has happened since last e3 that left everyone semi-puzzled for a few reasons. They're gonna want the next one dedicated to making people WANT one bad.

The very reason that the 3DS even required any damage control should be enough indication that they will not make the same mistakes.

If Nintendo didn't have a few things to blow people away at E3, we would have heard more by now. They wouldn't keep so tight lipped only to have a lackluster E3 showing. Being silent leading up to E3 tells me that they're banking on people getting hyped about the Wii U at E3, because they know what they've shown so far isn't really enough to get people excited for a new system. If they let E3 go by without multiple big surprises and game announcements, it will be a fail.

Do you not know Nintendo? They are always like this. In fact I would say that they've spoken more about the Wii U then I expected.

Also the fact that they are letting go of all this nintendo network information before E3 just shows that the focus will be on the hardware itself, but mostly games games gamessss.

I am expecting another Twilight-Princess-reveal style conference. That was epic.

Yes, I do know Nintendo and while I know they are quiet this much silence seems unusual even for them. I mean, not allowing developers to even show the Wii U logo at the end of trailers and on websites of games we know are being developed for Wii U is pretty outrageous even by Nintendo standards. The only reason we've heard anything is because they took such a big financial loss last year that they had to give their investors something so they know they are trying to get back on the right track.

I'm hoping more for an e3 2006 esque show.

That had an epic opening with Wii Music and the montage behind Miyamoto.

Then they can end with a huge reveal or something.

I want Miyamoto to come out in a spacesuit and throw stuffed Pikmin into the audience this year.

Is it bad if I'm more intrigued about NiN than the Wii U itself? I know how the controller can be used and as long as I can have my Nintendo games in glorious HD with good graphics, I'll be happy.

What I want to know is if NiN could rival with XBL and SEN.

Hopefully it does... if there's one thing I can see Nintendo doing with an online infrastructure, it's making it universal and accessible.
I'm talking Wii U/3DS/PC/Smartphone connectivity here. If they've been taking tips form EA and Valve like some said they have, then I can't see why they wouldn't go for this.
Their approach with the Wii/DS shows just how determined they are to get gaming instantly accessible from anywhere.

Honestly, they'll either go all in or not at all.

I'd think they would want people to be surprised when games are officially announced for the system.

I don't think XBL or SEN would have a chance if they went up against Nine inch Nails...

I assume you refer to Nintendo's media briefing on the 11th of May at E3 2004 when the audience went absolutely ballistic for the reveal trailer of The Legend of Zelda. That was indeed epic, though I hold E3 2006 greater regarding attendance, layout and shown properties. The media briefing at E3 2006 was sewn together very neatly and fitted perfectly Nintendo's agenda regarding Wii. Everything from Reggie's remarks on what really matters to Iwata and Miyamoto duking it out in Wii Sports was an absolute joy to experience. Though it didn't overlap the said epitome of greatness the The Legend of Zelda reveal radiated (and still radiates to this day).

If Nintendo can somehow mix these two media briefings together and in an effective and sensible yet up to date way present the games for Wii U and with a big bang at the end of the briefing bring out either The Legend of Zelda or Retro Studios' project (anything that's Shock and Awe anyway), what we'll see in early June may rival or even exceed that of 2004 and 2006. I'll also think it's time for Reggie to step up his game and deliver once again the name taking and the ass kicking he has become known for. It's been to long since we last saw that, at least if we exclude the shouting at Jeff Keighley last year.

I agree. I think we've seen the end of Nintendo half-assing it in the online space. They want the core gamer this time, and they know the only way to do that now is to have a competitive online offering. I really think we'll all be pleasantly surprised by Nintendo's online offerings.

The only thing that makes me worry is that the 3DS still has friend codes. I know it is still only one for the system, but they need to go altogether. If I play with somebody I enjoy playing with in a game, I should be able to add them as a friend so I can play with them in the future.

My prediction for E3: Gabe Newell appears on the stage alonside Satoru Iwata to unveil Half Life 3, then a 30 seconds teaser of real gameplay running on Wii U, the internet explodes, the pad controller by itself will automatically start to print money.

I'm hoping that Nintendo extends their presentation time from the usual 90 minutes. I know they usually try to keep things succinct, but with the amount of stuff they're reserving for E3 this year, they could easily go to 2 hours. Maybe even 2:30.

Wouldn't bother me.

We shall bear witness to revelaitons that will haunt our dreams for months on end.

No way they'll got for 2 and a half hours, but 2 hours maybe. I always feel their presentations are too short, though - plus, like you say, so much to announce this time around...

The 3DS' second year already looks pretty damn good, and it's the Wii U's re-unveiling. (Then, we'll see it at Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show.)

It's going to be better than last year.

Just, saying, Nintendo is very weird about its E3 presentations.
There's no telling how they'll lay it out.
At the very least, we won't have a 20+ minute Zelda demo this time.

I'd rather have E3 2010 2.0. That conference had everything. "Oh hey guys, so here's some games you might want to play on Wii and DS. Oh yeah, about that 3DS thing: here's an IP you haven't seen in 19 years and a bunch of games that will arrive on the system. So, we cool again?"

Allthough E3 '12 will be different. Starting with some 3DS software and quickly to reintroducing the Wii U. And all of the games.

I wouldn't be surprised by a third party game being demoed on stage this year for the Wii U.

Darksiders 2 demo, anyone?

Killer Freaks will be on stage. That's a given.
Lego City Stories as well.

And whatever other exclusives they nab.
I'd love to seem them bring someone from Retro on stage for once to show off their own game.

This year will be different in the fact that there's so much we don't know.

And I fully expect some kind of 3rd party presence on stage, either demoing a game or talking through a certain feature of the system...

Godamnit, I keep thinking - it could actually be Gabe.game

I dunno, 3DS had a great E3 and a huge backlash in 2010. The two things there are not compared to imply causation, that's just what happened.

However they perform at E3, unless it's simply devoid of software, should have no real bearing come launch time.

On the Rockstar thing I'm just afraid that they and other companies will once again brush off Nintendo with comments like "this platform doesn't have the audience for our game" or whatever.

Nintendo will get Rockstar.
That's not a problem.
It'll be the smaller devs that don't answer to the all mighty dollar that pose the problems.

I tried to write a list of what I'm expecting Nintendo to present on stage at E3, but I couldn't nail anything down. All of their internal teams are working on something, and they've got 3rd parties gagged within an inch of their lives. Nintendo's got so much to show this year that, even if they try to be conservative as usual, I don't think they'll be able to squeeze it all into their typical 90 minute format.

A Iwata said at the investors meeting that Nintendo really wants to wow everyone this E3. So I think they're going to try to talk about everything they conceivably can to ramp up hype for the Wii U (and maintain hype for the 3DS).

I dunno, I'm expecting a showing unlike anything we've seen from Nintendo in years. All signs point to it. I might have people over.

Vodka + shot glasses + mom's garlic hot wings recipe = BRING IT, NINTENDO.

Now imagine if Rockstar came on stage to show GTA V running on the Wii U... It's something like this that I expect to see this year.

I can already tell you that they likely won't give much, if any, time to multiplatform games, UNLESS it features a lot of exclusive content.
So we can already rule out a lot of games.
