Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

On the subject of gameplay; a game where you can control the controller screen as a top-down view of the city (UAV style) to track targets in a chase scenario would be masterful.

Imagine simply using a realtime render of the map in your hands instead of the 2d one tucked in current GTA games.

That's kind of what Chase Mii does.

Same here. I think RTS games and MMOs as well as other genres that have always had superior controls on PC have potential to work very well on the Wii U.

I really hope that Pikmin 3 incorporates a way to use the UPad touch screen and control your Pikmin with it. Similar to how a units are controlled on any RTS.

One thing is for certain. This is Nintendo generation to lose. I would love it all three consoles shared the same 3rd party games as I think nintendo has the best first party studios in the world but as a gaming enthusiast I could not imagine sticking with the Wii and the Wii alone.

Speaking of Pikmin 3, I wonder if we'll be able to use the controller as a magnifying glass to burn enemies and our Pikmin army to death.

Someone has probably already mentioned something like this, but I would like to see something like Starfox : Shotgun or something like that. This time each Arwing has a co-pilot (maybe ROB 64 style robots or something) enabling the main player to pilot his craft with a Wiimote and nunchuck while the co-pilot uses the WiiPad as a view finder and shoots targets Star Wars style via the gyro controls :

I proposed The Last Starfighter being made.

I know what your getting at but i'm not inferring asymmetrical multi-player gameplay. Instead a single player focused game where for instance you can take cover and then let fly with an overhead UAV drone with missiles and the like. Acquire targets like in Advanced Warfighter and lock onto them without needing to switch camera views or follow them whilst always having the interface infront and on the controller in a different view.

Seeing the same interfaces on other games, especially GTA and other shooters (controlling killstreaks independently in CoD comes to mind) would be brilliant and not something as something as simple as having a hidden screen from other players as great as that would be.

I believe the biggest known feature for me is the ability to travel with the Wii U and play on the go, as long as you find a power outlet.

I currently spend of all my Tuesdays and Thursdays on campus. I commute to college and have both morning/night classes so I have hour gaps of free-time in between classes that I usually spend to study/workout/play my 3DS. Having the ability to have my Wii U console in my bookbag while connected to a power outlet and therefore being able to play HD console experiences on my Wii U tablet will be fricken amazing. Not only can I game offline, but also online using the college's connection (already do it with my 3DS). For someone like me who is temporarily moving back into the boon-docks and being stuck with a satellite connection, this feature will be a god-send.

For real. Imagine playing a RTS and instead of having the top resource bar and the bottom misc build etc screens, that was all on the tablet, leaving the screen wide open and beautiful.
Except it doesn't match with the RTS genre, these games are about optimal management and not about taking your time to smell the roses. The more feedback you get on the screen the better, of course withouth being too intrusive. The real advantage of a touch screen has nothing to do with HUDs and more to do with direct control method.

Also the Wii remote had the potential to boost the RTS presence in the consoles but it looks like the audience isn't there yet. And i don't think the WiiU will be the console that spear heads the genre in the console realm.

Ubisoft already did this, exactly like that.

That's not known at all, in fact it's one the biggest unknows with the system. Remember some of the game concepts that have been tossed around need the interaction with both screens, so they might not work with the Wiiu tablet alone. If developers have to support single touch screen play then that means more work for them.

I'm excited for some potential ground-up ideas for the RTS genre on the Upad, but not simply a cut/paste job. Going from a K/M setup to a touchscreen would be a major step back. But I can see Pikmin or even a Diablo port being really good though. I'd love to see what Blizzard could do with a ground-up RTS idea.

I know what you mean, I see the possibilities of that
but we still have to see if the console needs to be plugged to a TV to work even when you're just using the controller.

Actually, think about it. We know Wii U can handle two Wii U controllers at the same time,
if Nintendo confirms that you don't need your TV like at all but a power outlet to play and that there will be games (first and third party) supporting both controllers, that would be one of the coolest things Nintendo could ever done. To that, add the online, the NFC functionality and all the features we still don't know about.

Now that you're talking about taking your console and controller with you, it would be beyond amazing if you could connect your Wii U with one of your friends Wii U (something like the GameCube Connectivity to allow more people to play together in the same room. Games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros or Need For Speed could see a huge advantage on it.

Using the screen as a zoom in of the action on the main screen would work pretty well.

Woah pardner, where did you hear that? I haven't heard anything mentioned about playing your games on the go.

I assume he means just taking the system with him and plugging it in to the wall somewhere and then playing it on the controller.

Seems inconvenient, but whatever, more power to you.

I bring my Wii to my local gaming trio's place. They have one there but I unlock everything on mine, and you can't always change unlockables.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind having the option of setting up games or fixing up CAWs while a TV show is finishing up, so that we can jump right into a game when the credits roll. This is a minor thing, but it would be a convenience.

My first post on Gaf. Being a long time Nintendo fan I'm glad it is on this thread.

Just a few thoughts I have Nintendo should do for the WiiU to be successful in terms of sales.

- Pack in a fun game that shows off the gameplay possibilities of using the U Pad + Wii controllers - an experience you can't find anywhere else. Similar to how Wii Sports showed off the possibilities of motion controls.

- Moneyhat for some more key 3rd party exclusive titles that would fit its image. I'm sure they already have with Dragon Quest X, Sonic Dimensions and Lego City Stories.

- I'm probably the only person on this board who thinks this but don't over engineer the console so that would be out of reach of the mass market. Having roughly 2x the power of the 360 is good enough. 95% of gamers don't care about high end graphics - the Wii reaching almost 100 million in sales shows that. Ideally the console should be no more than $300.

- A robust, streamlined online infrastructure.

By the way, I can see a lot of creative gameplay possibilities with the tab controller.

For example, it can be used in local multiplayer in a Mario Kart game like Double Dash where a player drives using the wiimote and the other player on the kart aims and fires projectiles using the U Pad. This is better than having split screen.

Or it can be used as an extra set of 'eyes' or visor like in a Metroid Prime game. Face the tab controller at the TV screen and you can see something different on your tab screen.

It can be used like VR glasses where when you physically move you see around you 360 degrees. This would be cool in a game like Luigis Mansion and Pokemon Snap. Remember the tab controller has a cam, gyroscope, and magnometer (sp?). The U Pad is the closest thing to VR for a home console if you think about.

I can also imagine, perhaps, a third party making a U Pad tripod stand so you can have an extra screen in front of you for inventory, maps etc. while you play with the Wii controller.

Probably any racing sum can use it as a dashboard

or you can use the u pad as a steering wheel (resembles a f1 driving wheel) have a mirror, dashboard, quick settings on the go ala GT5 and logitech's GT Wheel

I thought that will all the recent news this thread was going to explode, but it has been pretty quiet actually.

New threads drained momentum.

But what I am noticing, since Nintendo's announcement about online, and
the fact the nextbox might not be that more powerful than the WiiU, a sense of
relaxation. Like we can now focus on the games. And the wonderful ways
developers can actually make use of the new controller.

Not exactly what i said. The point i was getting at was that you didn't need to change the camera perspective to slow down the action. You'd always have a live stream of whats going on in your hands whenever you wanted it. Not press the button, wait for the UAV to load, find where your UAV is on another map and recalibrate it.

Auto lock-on, and a continuous camera to keep the pace up was my prime concern, not regurgitating exactly what they did on another game. sheesh.

I think it's because a good deal of the news (sans the NFC part) was things we all expected. For me the biggest impact had the confirmation of the infrastructure for DD of retail games being in place on the 3DS, as I'm tired of having to hunt for each and every 3DS retail game worth a damn.

It's quite reassuring to see that these problems that pretty much defined the Wii seem to be MUCH improved on next gen. Nintendo needed to get their act together and everything about the Wii U after the E3 presentation has been positive.

Screw all this FPS talk.
We need to talk about how awesome console RTS games will be on this thing.

I hope you mean Pikmin with RTS games, because quite frankly the genre sucks balls for the most part.
Still, I guess it's better than FPS games, which are even more horrid.

I thought that will all the recent news this thread was going to explode, but it has been pretty quiet actually.

It happened with the other thread when some type of new news came out causing a new thread. Most of the discussion would shift to being in the new thread. Because of that this thread won't get anywhere near as large since we'll be getting actual info leading up to E3.

That sounds awesome. I, for one, really appreciated the relative portability of Wii. I'd just worry about covering the vents if you plan on keeping it in your bag. We don't know how hot this thing runs yet.

Same. If they start releasing most games on the eShop I could see more people importing Japanese 3DS's, seeing as games would be easier to acquire.

I'm an importer myself (Have BtL and RE:R on the way) and have to pay roughly £60-70 ($94-110) for a 6,000 yen game, but if I download from the eShop it'd cost me £50 max. I love having boxes, but I may consider the download route for some games, and may be doing the same when I get to importing Wii U games.

Been a while since I've had time to think out a post but NFC has me intrigued. It's not something I immediately thought of for Wii U being an up and coming technology but the potential here is quite cool when you really think about it.

-Easy syncing: Bring your Wii U controller over to a friends house, instead of having to pull lids off battery compartments to find the sync button you can just touch them and press a button.

-Payment: More and more phones will start using mobile payment methods using NFC. Just touch your phone to the Wii U controller to initiate a transaction.

-Payment Cards: You could integrate NFC tags into eShop cards meaning instead of entering a long identifier you can just touch them together to add the points. There might be a few security hiccups if you could get a Wii U in range of a card display but it seems unlikely overall.

-Toy and Figurines: This is one space where Nintendo being a sort of toy company has a huge advantage. You could save character data from Smash Bros into a mini-statue to take with you. Things like Skylanders but with a Nintendo flavor. Maybe you could even order NFC tokens that look like your Mii. All in all it's a great way to pair physical goods with digital software.

-Temporary Shares/Trials: I'm still thinking of better uses but imagine you have some media like an music album that you download using a download card. You could share this music with someone by means of a RFID card, they can't keep it with registering the card and the card can only be registered once but as long as the card is near a Wii U it can use that media. It provides a way to make digital owner ship a little more physical by adding a token.

-Data Sharing: So if you can take your Wii U remote to a friend's house then you could touch them together to share game data (eg track ghosts).

-Id tokens: In each Wii U pack they could have a card, figurine or other token that you can pair with a Nintendo Network account. Once done you can scan the token even on a friend's Wii U to switch the current user to you and load your settings. This would definitely go along with the family member profiles concept they are basing Wii U's Nintendo Network on. You could say play a friend's Animal Crossing by simply scanning your token/character and visit their village.

-Alternate distribution digital content: Also in a game like Animal Crossing you could get cheaply made cards that have content items like patterns and furniture. Or in Pokemon you could get unlockables for seeing movies, buying products etc. just like with the e-Reader. You could trade these with friends to get fully unlocked sets.

It's not a fact that the Nextbox will not be much more powerful, but I understand the relaxation part :P
