Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Minimalist designs are the best looking, but impractical for actual commercial use.

You want a potential costumer to identify what console the game is for as they walk by the aisle.

The more effort the costumer has to make to find a product, the least likely the costumer will bother to look.

That's why box art designs come with those big distracting banners on top or the side of the box, to grab people's attention.

Sure, we would all love to have stuff like this:

But in reality, this is what we will get:

Ugh, oh god, dont remind me...

Nothing "casual" in you, is just that Wario Ware really kicks ass.

Smooth Moves still one of the best wii games around.

And it also showed a lot of what the wiimote could do.

Unfortunally, nobody did anything with the wiimote

Agreed, although perhaps it also highlighted to technical shortcomings of the Wiimote. Alot of the IR depth based stuff was pretty wacky. Perhaps that's why Nintendo seems to be downplaying the pointer now or using it only as a periodic calibration point.

I've personally enjoyed countless hours of Wario Ware:Smooth Moves. The multiplayer is extremely fun even though it only uses a single controller. Lifeline is my personal favorite, with the russian roulette style game of rope cutting at the end. It's a great time with friends, and recently my girlfriend's nieces have been getting into it, so it seems to appeal to multiple demographics. I don't know how well it sold, though. Isn't it kind of hard to find now? Why is it not in the Nintendo Selects line?

But then why are the Japanese allowed to get awesome stuff like this?

Even we used to get nice simple stuff :(

If Zelda took place in a Portal 2-like environment where you were just walking forward and solving puzzles, I'd consider that to be an improvement. Other people would see that as the worst possible step backward from the open, epic, exploratory nature of the games they treasure.

No Zelda game is ever going to be approved by everyone again, unless they specifically go back to A Link to the Past and make the exact same game with different dungeons, story, and items. Then only a vocal minority will outright hate it.

The best Nintendo can do right now is finding the biggest market Zelda can appeal to and make the series just for them. Everyone's just vying to for their tastes to be that market now.

Going back to LttP is exactly what I've been asking for the last few years. Basically ever since I played OoT and realized it wasn't for me. Seriously, that would be the killer app to end all killer apps for me.

Hey folks. Havent updated the OP in a couple weeks because I haven't seen anything newsworthy. Is there something relevant and newthat I have missed?

Edit: A LttP non 3D sequel makes the Wii U a day one purchase. Its the game I've wanted most over the last 20 years. :(

Uhhh, well UE4 will likely run on the Wii U, since it only requires a 1TFLOP GPU (for 720p).

Retro Zelda doesn't have the same mass appeal as Retro Mario. Ocarina of Time is the Zelda everyone raves about to the point it's annoying and a lot of these people don't care at all about Link to the Past. Or even know it exists.

Not gonna lie

That looks like pants unzipping.

Yes. Meanwhile everyone seems somewhat tired of OoT-style Zelda games. Perhaps a switch back would be appreciated. LttP has aged better than OoT in my opinion. But then I never cared for OoT, so I am hardly without bias.

I agree with Alberto. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone hate on LttP. Hell, make both. You guys can have your dull Zelda - I want fun Zelda back.

We need something the scale of Wind Waker but instead of the ocean it's all densely packed world ala the original LoZ. Nintendo haven't been able to achieve this since they've been working w/ basically the same hardware for 3 games in a row.

It's a content-to-scale ratio problem with 3D. Not about hardware so much as an inherent challenge with creating 3D titles. There will never be a 3D game that is as compact and content-packed as the best 2D games, IMO.

But that's a debate for another thread.

New! Legend of Zelda with ALTTP world density and some cool usages of the Wii U controller would be so damn cool. I remember pitching an idea where a game like that had an aesthetic like a stained glass window and the gameplay on the controller would reflect this with colder areas "frosting up" the viewpoint, glares of light would come in from a radiant area outdoors, and puzzles could be interactive using light elements from Phantom Hourglass or by moving the controller about for "fuller" views of the area.

Of course my junior developer ideas are probably trash tier, but I love the idea of New LoZ and a stained glass art direction too much.

Not sure I want to sacrifice an epic and fun overworld over a dense and annoying one.

A good balance like the Elder Scrolls games would be good, but of course with actual enviromental variety.

some more random thoughts:
  • Just so long as the Wii U web browser isn't completely gimped, Flash/HTML5 games and web apps could end up being a big deal on the Wii U. While there were some sites out there made for the Wii browser which had some halfway-decent Wii-based Flash games, they were seriously hampered by Wii's lack of power and memory. This time around, and especially because of the touch screen, I have to expect we'll be seeing more and better offerings.

That's a good point. If the Wii and the 3DS are any implication the Wii U should actually have a decent (though probably not great) browser. Given the technical limitations they're up against, the Wii and 3DS browsers are damn magic.

Early prediction of the uncanny valley? Look at his face

I've always loved this artwork.

He looks constipated. Or, perhaps he's scared and about to mess his robo-pants?

(and I really, really hope that Darksiders 1 is made available on the Wii U. Jumping into the story/series while it's already ongoing would bother me. I'll even pay full price.)

Honestly (and I've posted this elsewhere, apologies) - the ultimate showcase for Wii-U would be a 3D remake of Link to the Past. They could even get it out fairly quickly and it wouldn't have to be viewed as the sole Zelda game for this upcoming console generation.

Think about stepping out of your house into the pouring rain and seeing soldiers marching around barking orders that martial law is in order and return to your home. No sword, only a lantern. All in glorious 1080p.

For fun, they could include the original LTTP to be played on the tablet.

As much as I could probably eat them up when they're released, no more remakes! I'm anxious to see more new things happen, even if they stick to conventional molds.

Samaritan isn't going to run on any of the systems as it was.
They were always going to have to make concessions for the consoles.
Always.
But that's neither here nor there.
UE4 is what we're talking about.

The numbers you were referring to were for Samaritan. We don't know about UE4 yet other than it's scalable.
