Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

I shopped it by myself :)
I could upload some kind of template if you want to.

Thinking about giving the unknown Wii U OS a shot, have some ideas, but I will do that tomorrow when I find the time..

Edit: There you go!

It's not that great (I have very little skill with editing images :P) but whatever. I hope Nintendo tries to make their cases smaller.
Positives of smaller cases include:
-Economical/"Green"
-Differentiates from Wii boxes
-Less clutter for my shelf
-Publishers will maybe try to make simpler, cleaner, more organized box art.

NO. Less art for the cover, or it ends up squished. NO NO NO. Keep it DVD sized, and just make the cases Black in America, Blue in Japan and Green in Europe/Australia
And that's different from a banner at the top... HOW?
If someone just used the plastic space at the top by embossing the logo on it, then it basically equates to the same thing.
Someone do a mockup please.

Having a small case, with a banner at the top is different, it wouldn't allow as much space to show the art on the cover.

How dare they make a profit on each sale?! :x They should make billions in losses on the hardware and then re-coup it on the software sales! :x [/nerdentitlement]

Oh don't worry dear, I want one too. I just like stringing you along! :P

:)
but please be careful and don't get yourself banned again!

Thank you! :)

Tell me moar!

Some of the United team were playing keepy ups and Becks hoofed the ball out of the training ground saying "'Ave it!!!" mimicking the John Smiths advert. When the ball came down it broke Gary Neville's windscreen lol. That's one of my favourite adverts, a real classic. :oD

I'm curious as to what can be done with a box 5 3/8 x 4 7/8.

I'm just tired of the oversized cases for a disc thats under 5 inches wide.

i say we bring back the saturn disc cases. those things fucking rocked

You just want a new source for replacing your damaged, disc-only Saturn and Sega CD collection! I see right through you!

Those cases were nearly the definition of "overkill." The only worse example I can think of is the original AnimEigo box for Bubblegum Crisis on DVD--3 or 4 CD jewel cases stuffed into a big-old-PC-game-sized cardboard box.

I just imagine it something in the line of no top banner, just a watermark on the top saying WiiU. More space for impressive/or an crap boxert art.

I'm tired of cases with sleeves. I know this won't happen, but it would be awesome if the games came in those snap cases with the artwork printed on paperboard.

What if Nintendo chooses steelbook cases?
With that border-less design posted above, yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

EDIT: Well, steelbook for first run.

I want animal crossing to be a launch game, with everyone looking like puppets. Like photo-real puppets. The world around you should look like its made of 3D paper ala papercraft.

I just want all the next gen consoles to be out already. I'm sick and tired of the numbers game comparing specs and postulating what is good for the industry and what isn't. I also can't wait for some people to eat crow. And if one of those people turn out to be me, then by God, so be it!

It would will give me great pleasure to see certain special posters proven wrong.

love the smaller boxes.
for some reason has a 'new' feel.

AMD's Cape Verde GPUs revealed (mainstream 28nm chips)

I guess something in the range of the 7750 (55W @ 800 MHz) is the best we can hope for, I guess with slightly lower clock rates even (and lower voltage)

EDIT: According to a benchmark linked at Beyond3D a crossfire setup of two 7770 gets you roughly the performance of the 7950, so keeping in mind what Carmack said about the PC overhead (you need two times the power on PC) I think we could expect nice things even out of such a small chip.

EDIT2: The HIS Radeon HD7750 iCooling uses 46W of power with unchanged specs (Link)

hmm, I wonder if a far cry 3 port is all that Crytek is working on for the wii u.

edit: nvm, that's being developed by ubisoft montreal

The sad thing is that all of our cool ideas for visual styles of Wii U game are not going to happen. We can only hope that Nintendo comes up with shit so cool even we never thought of it.

Negative:
- USK, USK+PEGI and OFLC classifications on cover will finally fuck everything up :(

I like the outline, but Pikmin's should be green.

Looks great to me! But we all know a bunch of stickers and crap will turn almost every cover to crap..

A few notes:

-Never position characters or anything directly on the ground of an image. In print it can easily happen that you'll cut off part of those characters even if you've left the usual 3mm overlap. Aside from that, it creates an overall distortion to the layout that makes it feel rushed.
-Adding a simple curved ground on which the Pikmin could stand on would allready solve this problem as well as highlight them above the ground. The green background would bleed all the contrast from your cover in Print.
-Personally I would go for a lower contrast and saturation background image to highlight the Pikmin and the Signet/Logo.

Still the format itself looks good, as it's possible to incorporate more horizontal designs when standard DVD cases all follow the same vertical design layout.

Personally I would want games to come in paper/hardcover sleeves, with great print qualities, emboss logos and all that. They could also sell that as eco friendly, since DVD cases have been under fire for their waste of synthethic packaging material, and the problems with recycling.

Yes!
You are on the right track.
The idea with the WiiU controller allows us play the entire game in wondrous HD without the clutter of a HUD. This should be translated to the game box design as well.

They should also stand next to a ruler, and show that they are depicted at actual size.

And only paid until June. If they'd fixed the name you'd think they'd buy a longer lease :)

Name change confirmed!

Like the name Revolution, WiiU could have been used as simply a marketing concept.
So with the Wii, we were to expect a "revolution" in gaming.

In this case, we should expect the next Wii to be focused on "U"s.

Others are probably more qualified to explain the pros and cons, but I'll take a short stab at it. An SOC would be good for things like size, power consumption, and any theoretical shared pool of eDRAM. However, since it has been stated that the CPU is 45nm, it is a good thing that the GPU need not be limited to that process. A 32nm GPU means less power consumption and/or higher graphical output.

System in a Package is what they are going for.

Took at crack at it because i didn't like how much the AC and Metro cases look regular Wii cases. This is at 25%, based off the Wii template from the custom cover thread.

If only one thing is similar in this design to the real, final design I hope it's the little pictures on the spine. Best thing about 3DS cases.
This is an incredible cover. I would love this style of boxes.

That pikmin case is absolutely phenomenal. I love the size, I love the coloring, and I love the presentation. The actual boxart could use a little work, as its probably too minimal for retail release, but still...

Really great work. I'm going to assume the real cases won't look anywhere near that good, just to be safe.
