Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

The 3DS didn't have the "big exclusive" at launch. The market was full with pet simulation games already, so why bother buying another one? They didn't have something in the scope of a new Zelda or a new Mario. Since they can't deliver these two at launch (need more time), we can expect to have more smaller franchises to come out at launch. Pikmin 3 is a given, would make most of the Nintendo fans buy a system, which results in a solid launch for them. But other than that? What are the most successful franchises of Nintendo?

Mario Kart
Mario Jump&Run
Smash Bros
Wii *blank*

What else?

EDIT:
Did you mean perchance by the end of 2012/early 2013?

Oh wow, still in 2011, even in march. :P

...damnit.

A 2D Mario is coming in early 2012 for the 3DS anyway. I think we can expect to see a trailer of the big new 3D Mario. Wow...this is extremely exciting, since you basically now that it's going to be in the top 5 games of the generation. :)

You know, other publishers aren't hesitant to release the same (but actually different) game on both home consoles and portable systems simultaneously. Maybe Nintendo is planning something similar, though it'd be better if they had something in mind at least a little more interesting, like cross-system play.

Nintendo has alot more exclusive power then that, DK,Kirby,Star Fox,Wave Race,F-Zero,Eternal Darkness and Miyamoto is suppose to be working on a new IP and we know Retro is working on something as well, there will be more then just Pikmin, which honestly is no guarentee to be a launch title either.

I hope we get a new Mario design for any of the WiiU games featuring him.

We've pretty much had the same model (and graphics) since 2001 and with the 3DS being in the Wii ball park, it just extends it.

Is it enough new design for ya ?

"Super Mario Kart IDRL (In Da Real Life)" with a modern engine featuring to-the-roof-poly-count-models & more-than-real-breathtaking-lights & never-seen-before-photorealistic-textures !

It could be a concept !

Oh wow, I haven't thought of that...This would be amazing. Friends could just bring over their 3DS and play with you and everyone would still have two screens to use.

Who's everyone? Crazy people? :p Who'd want an hour of port confirmations over EAD games in HD that will melt your eyes with their beauty after 5 years of waiting for Nintendo to go HD.
Games like Assassines Creed 3 and others coming to the console will happen, and it's going to be nice when we can be one hundred percent sure about it, but that alone won't sell anyone on the console and their big E3 re-reveal also needs 1st party titles and good showings of the tablets features to convince people.

Well then call me Senor Crazy, because I definitely want some port confirmations. At this point people are just assuming that Wii U is going to get these major 3rd party titles; but Nintendo's got the lid on so tight that while these games are being actively hyped for other consoles we're not hearing a peep about Wii U versions. So I wouldn't be at all upset if Nintendo spent most of their E3 presentation this year confirming these games, and bringing devs on stage to demo them and show how playing them on the Wii U is going to be a unique experience.

We don't need confirmation that we're getting yet another Mario/Zelda/Metroid game. We know those games are coming. I, frankly, don't want to hear shit about them until they actually have something to show. Nintendo would do best to spend their time hyping up ALL the big games that will be immediately available for Wii U at launch...yes, even if it is a few ports.

EDIT: To clarify, if they've got another Mario/Zelda/Metroid planned for launch window then by all means put it on stage. But don't NOT put 3rd party games on stage because people feel that Nintendo's E3 presentation should just be the Nintendo Show.

I'm just talking about the franchises that really sell a lot. A LOT. Killer apps. Wave Race isn't a killer app...at least not for Nintendo.

Rémi Gaillard : The Game ?

New Super Mario Bros Mii is a must at launch. This system is going to be sold on the idea of switching back and forth between TV and the Controller (at first at least). NSMB Mii is the perfect game to display this feature so that the masses jump on the Wii U boat, and it becomes the "hot" thing to buy for the holidays.

Pikmin 3 will only appeal to the core nintendo fans, and some others. I don't expect it at launch. If anything, they'll have a new IP ready for launch.

I know where your coming from, I was just saying Nintendo doesn't need a Mario at launch but they need more then big third party games plus Pikimin because honestly Pikmin isn't that huge either. I think Nintendo needs exclusives they don't need to be massive games, I'd say Pikmin,Kirby and another exclusive of some kind plus third party games is a good launch. There just needs to be some good exclusive Nintendo games at launch, I think they could deliver the killer apps later. They just can't decide because they don't have a killer app ready for launch that they can rely on all multiplat games, there needs to be some mix.

Awesome, thanks, so it's essentially for framebuffer and post procession. That means my question becomes "Is that really such a benefit that it's OK to put up with slow main RAM access?".

NOTE: I haven't finished reading the entire article, it's MASSIVE.

Well I think we all would hope they give devs as much system BW to work with as possible. But you can see why they wouldn't necessarily have to go "all out" for that. If they did you wouldn't need the eDRAM in that manner to begin with.

And yeah that's a good read and good for getting a fundamental understanding at least. Though I think some of us are expecting Wii U's eDRAM to be more flexible than Xbox 360's.

Speaking of which, I have been thinking about Nintendo introducing on WiiU a new enhanced version of Miis: making use of Utablet's built-in cameras, players may just scan their own face and simply put it on top of their Miis, sort of what they made on Mario kart's arcade by Namco.

If they should improve Miis, this could be used as a selling point, and I admit it would be a funny feature, especially in local multiplayer.

Typically there is a AAA Nintendo game (Super Mario 64 for example) plus an AA Nintendo game (Pilotwings 64, Pilotwings Resort) at launch.
The only problem I have so far with New Super Mario Bros Mii is that it actually not feel brand-new. I know it's frakking Mario but it doesn't carry so much novelty to me for beeing able to draw the hole system at launch by ots own. I still bet it will built-in the system. The Wii U is going to be 50 or 100 $ more expensive than the Wii, Nintendo better include some strong software with it.
Pikmin 3 will likely be AA title. It will also show more of the system capabilities. Touch controls, streaming, HD graphics. But yeah, it's not really a mass market and well known IP.
But if you add the definitive (as they may want to market it) version of Resident Evil 6, maybe Nintendo will green light this 3 titles software line-up for launch. Don't forget Nintendo will try to provide one first or second party title per month after launch. They tried with the 3DS, and nearly achivied it.

On the question of first-party titles vs third ones that is developing since a few pages, don't forget that there is another kind of game type, which i'm rather interested in: third-party titles made with some help/collaboration of Nintendo, at least in the initial stages of development. Killer Freaks is a third-party soft, but one of the most interesting and intriguing one of the known line-up, thanks to its asymmetrical gameplay ideas. Their VIP place at E3 2011, their endorsement by Nintendo (with their roundtable and Q&A session) is a proof (+ some Nintendo statements regarding this) that Big N may try a new kind of approach/relationship with third-parties that could come to fruition and results in very enjoyable exclusive games, with the IP/ideas/background/gamedesign of these studios + a sort of Nintendo seal of quality.

I ended up not playing MKWii too much except with friends locally, but I tried the 3DS kart and really loved the first person driving. More excited now that I tried that and considering that they will do some cool stuff with the sub-screen.

Also, off topic, loved the Game of Thrones references in the past pages. Really looking forward to getting the Blu-Ray this Tuesday.

Lines up with the Sonic Dimensions rumor.

A Sonic game with Nintendo working on it? day -1

Well, this isn't new for Nintendo.
And it's something that they've been doing a lot of lately.
Promising to help publish or fund or localize a game in order to secure exclusives.
It's served them well on the 3DS, and you can bet they'll do more for the Wii U.

We've already seen these collaborations in the past with Sega, Square, Capcom or Team Ninja. Maybe this time, they want to work with western develeopers as well. Bungie, Crytek, Epic, Valve,... They could support Nintendo in some of the technical aspects of development, since a lot of them are familiar with the new engines. I would love to see NeoGaf if a Bungie+Nintendo fps ever happens. xD

I'm still betting on Crytek and Nintendo working on TS4 for the Wii U.
Just fits too perfectly.

Many on NeoGAF would be apoplectic over such a thing. I can hear it now..

"Why are they wasting their time and resources with Nintendo?!"

Yeah you can trace back Nintendo intervention with other developers since the NES, of course. Development & marketing wise.

But from what i know, it may be on another level with the Wii U. It's like "gamedesign courses on the uses of asymmetrical screen setup". A tutorial system to help guaranteeing that certain third-party games will reach a certain standard of fun/gameplay quality, etc, for the Wii U.

Consider that Nintendo have said numerous times in recent interviews that they are seeking help with certain technical aspects of development with which they are unfamiliar and forging partnership with other teams accordingly. I don't believe that a NintendoxCrytek or NintendoxEpic collaboration or some use of either companies' engines in a Nintendo game is that far-fetched.

Welp. Registration just opened about 2 hours ago. I wonder if any exhibitors are chatting about their projects while in line? :)

God - we need twitter moles!

We need to compose a list of all the devs/insiders who have the tweeting habits of a 13-year-old girl. Someone is bound to let something slip!

You're talking more of Nintendo subcontracting third-parties with their own franchises like the Oracles Zelda, Metroid, etc. (with a big involvement of Nintendo of course).

Think of third-parties with their own IP, preferably new ones for the Wii U, with a stronger-than-seen-before tutorial system/help/support in the initial stages of development by Nintendo themselves, to ensure that they have well understood the Wii U concept & possibilities of the padlet, keep them on good tracks, with a fortunately good game at the end.

Yeah, we need a crazy twitter-man making comments on everything and taking pictures from the inside !

People can imagine developers gathering and speaking to each other more easily with that :p

PS: the orange guy is surely speaking about Nintendo...or thinking that its interlocutor hat is kinda meh :D

Edit: oh myyyy ! My first first ! It's an honor ! +20 achievement points !

That's just the same dude in real life.

A redesign like this

Or how this was changed in the past to what we currently have.

I don't think they'll be a change this big at this point though.

At the very least, I hope they start switching up the graphical style for the secondary games, like the Paper series.
