Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

We obviously have good potential here for an improved unit of measure for performance. "N times the Xbox 360" is too old hat. Now, we can say "Supported by Unreal Engine N".

So, Xbox 360 is supported by UE3.0, and the Super Xbox will be supported by UE4.0. I think that it is reasonable to assume that Wii U will reach Unreal Engine 3.8 levels of power.

So, Epic on the Wii U, hand-in-hand with Nintendo* ? :p

The games that influenced our influential gamedesigners

Cliff Bleszinski, The Legend of Zelda

Nothing is more personal for me than The Legend of Zelda.

I fell in love with Nintendo. This was my first true love.

I was teased at school a little bit. I was chased off the bus and called Nintendo Boy. It kind of sucked back then, but my life is fucking awesome now, and they can just go on with their lame lives.

I don't know if you recall the ad, it was this guy with a black turtleneck...my friends and I are sitting there...like, really? You're going to take me from Mario to this? It was really a bad representation of what this game is.

Then I learned about the cartridge, and that it was gold. Our minds were blown...that was my first lesson in branding.

Then I found the manual. I didn't have the game yet...and my friend showed up one day with the manual...I still to this day remember the scent of that thing as I opened it.

There's a compass and a map and a boomerang and bows and arrows...this was all new territory for me!

It ignited my senses.

*Cliff is the famous designer from Epic. Well, he told several times that Miyamoto influenced him a lot, and it didn't translate in an Epic super support of Big N consoles.

But this year, from the comments at E3 2011, water meet fish, UE demonstrations behind closed doors, etc, etc, we can only hope :)

I think it was Crytek that created the Wii U's garden demo. If you watch Crytek's new CryEngine 3 video demo you will notice a very familiar garden scene with all the sakura trees in it. The scene looked very similar to Nintendo's earlier garden demo.

That's not from GDC though..

Ah, okay. I got the impression that it was targeted in large part towards developers at the conference due to its timing.

edit: And because the press release was marked as being from San Francisco, which is where the GDC is and not usually (to my knowledge) where Nintendo originates their press releases.

One day, we'll know :)

I was just saying that, from afar, there are elements that are converging to the hypothesis that these two companies have closer ties than before. The fact that a key designer is tirelessly citing Nintendo as its biggest influence must have an impact somewhere, sometimes. Like "ok, i'm a N-Boy, i wasn't able to express my creativity in their previous hardware because of this & that, now it's better, so it's time to jump on the ship". A mix of speculation & wishful thinking, with eyes directed upon UE4 :p

I thought the same thing when I saw that video. But it's hard to tell.

Look again, they're not very similar at all, except for the setting of course.

We've always known that Cliff is a huge Nintendo geek.
It's Mark that's the problem.

Yeah i was referring to its former statements about his Miyamoto influences. But Rein seems to be less harsh than before also. It doesn't translate on a "we'll do all we can to make UE4 available on Wii U, in parternship with Nintendo" though.

The future will tell.

Not being able to run UE4 will NOT have the same affect that not being able to run UE3 on the Wii had, so I really don't see how it would be the "same mistake". The discrepancy between UE3 and UE4 will be next to nothing compared to UE2 and UE3.

Also, keep in mind, even without UE4, UE3 can (and will) be modified with UE4 features much like Irrational did with Bioshock and UE2.

Just seems like it could have the same effect of marginalizing Nintendo to a place of not getting strong support. I don't want half the 3rd party games available, I want all of them. This gen has shown me that 3rd party games can be a ton of surprising fun (bioshock, batman, dead space). This gen may be the first where I can give up the other consoles and have good HD fun since the N64/PS1 era as the other guys aren't focused on good first party titles.

Cliff is a cool dude. Did Epic actually ever did something for a Nintendo console?

Indeed, Cliff is a cool dude. But for all his talk talk talk about how much he loooves Nintendo, we surely haven't seen him doing much for their consoles lately. You'd think his opinion weighed more there.

Ok show of hands, who wants a Zelda game with a huge, densely packed over-world? I can just imagine going to Hyrule field on Epona, with grass swaying everywhere...seeing a glint in the horizon and galloping in that direction to explore ancient ruins.

*sigh*
