Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

It really is not surprising, given that Rayman Origins hit every platform under the sun, but it is nice to know. If true, it will be another third party game I will definitely get on Wii U.

Im really hoping I can do most of next generation with the Wii U, then pick up the other platforms when they and their games are cheap enough. Getting the Wii first this gen made it hard to 'keep up' with the bigger releases (and some not so big ones).

The most interesting part is that i think Ubi won't just put virtual buttons & some sort of 2D inventory for it. They intend to have a real, proper use of the DRC for the title. Grain of salt.

Another angle of what the TV display (i've heard third-parties are found of this kind of DRC utilization) ?

Third parties probably like using the DRC for different angles of the same scene because it involves common usage of the rendering pipeline, so you can get much nicer looking scenes on both screens, since you're not doing to full rendering jobs at once.

It doesn't matter how many times they did it. When a company changes their strategy, the past is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is the philosophy behind their new strategy. The NES-SNES-N64-GC strategy is clearly over for Nintendo, the philosophy behind Wii is Nintendo's current business model and, as long as they're successful by following it, logic dictates that they aren't going to make any major changes to it (if any).

It is common policy for firms to reevaluate their strategies regularly based on new situations and economic realities. The fact that Nintendo is as self-sufficient as it is actually gives it more flexibility in changing its strategy.

I can't speak to 2D platformers, but one of the massive problems with first-person 3D platformers is not knowing where your damned legs are (think: "Trespasser" from the nineties and the "Metroid Prime" series from the naughties). Hell, even third-person 3D platformers (Mario, de Blob) could be improved if the DRC screen had a locked top-view to complement the view on the TV screen so you know better where things are in relation to your feet.

Yeah, it's an idea already talked about for a Spiderman or a Mirror's Edge 2 Wii U, with an internal view on the DRC for immersive & very precise gameplay, and a 3rd person one on the TV for a broader perspective & appreciation of the stage.

The possibilities of gamedesign thanks to the system setup are so interesting and numerous.

lol at the rumors relayed by some french websites talking about Android on Wii U.

and lol at me if this more than very very unlikely scenario happens

wow, vg247 speak of that also :D

I'd be quite pleased if they announced an Android based UI, I discussed it here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=36868260&postcount=403

I actually (and this is a point of personal shame) wrote to Nintendo over a year and a half ago telling them they should look into putting Android on 3DS.

Implementation is free, as is forking it for your own purposes, and for their own private software eco system they can have their own software (retail games etc) run in something other than Dalvik VM -- Android allows for that...

They could even write their own store interface, and not necessarily use the Google Play market. Think Amazon Kindle Fire. They could ask developers to tweak (for control) and resubmit Android apps to their own store and it'd be a great way for them to gain a lot of apps very quickly.

I've long felt that in terms of UI design, Nintendo have been trying to reinvent the wheel and they just haven't had the staff to do it well.

You know what I would like to see on the Wii U? More arcade VC games. Arcade games are probably my favorite. Most of my XBLA purchases were classic arcade titles like TMNT, Pacman, etc. I would love for Capcom and Konami to release their fleet of beat-em-ups on the Wii U VC. To this day I hold my breath for Capcom's Dungeon and Dragon arcade games to make it to the VC. They were amazing and I want to experience both of them again.

For Rayman? No gimickery needed for that title. Just make sure that I can play the game entirely on the DRC, Ubi.

Yup. The general rule is skepticism until proven otherwise..

What, in this thread? Come now, we define HYPE based on vague guesses here!

Also new Wii tie ratio is 8.54. In case it got lost in all the madness, I wanted to re-speculate that due to pursuit for an audienced mixed at least slightly more towards the dedicated gaming audience) at the same point in its life, the Wii U should have a higher tie. Mind, this doesn't mean higher software sales, just a higher ratio of software sales to hardware sales.

also I posted chartz but nobody cared, woe is me!

smh at the crappy rumors lately :|

Hell's wrong with y'all? We spent last night (and a little bit of today) thinking of interesting ways to use the DRC*, there's been a ton of new financial and outlook information. All of this totally dwarfs the approximately two tiny terrible rumours that appeared today.

* edit: okay, there were like two people here doing that, but it was fun!

Oh of course a classic & solid 2D platformer is enough, but we need to think outside the box for every genre with the padlet, even this kind of game could implement an interesting & fun use of the DRC :)

Wat crappy rumors

The Wii U will be "hardcore" and feature 25ish threads, its OS will be based on Android, every Nintendo IP will be developed in cooperation with Epic and will use Unreal Engine 3, and the main focus of the system will be tv & video on demand streaming.

It's awesome ! :D

financial finameh

boring.... zzzzzz

You ignored half the stuff I listed. We've also recently have had Warren Spector praising Nintendo's policies regarding keeping down software budgets, information on Ubisoft's biometric feedback title being completed (and then that information almost immediately disappearing from the source), a discussion by Sakurai on Super Smash Cousins*, TimeSplitters 4 allegedly seen in the wild, confirmation that Nintendo is aggressively pursuing digital delivery of retail titles. Some guy posted interesting charts concerning how well software is selling on Nintendo's home console platforms compared to the equivalent previous-gen transitional period, and Pachter wants to string up Iwata by the balls**.

Are you helping, or are you just complaining? :P

edit: I don't mean to attack with this. It's just that… IdeaMan and I both made a really concerted effort last night to raise up the morale and interestingness of the thread by discussing interesting uses of the DRC. There were quite a few really nice posts thrown back and forth on the subject, but nobody gave a crap about it at all -- people just want to bitch about polygons and such then complain about how nothing interesting is happening in the thread. Also, I have to design a car dealership for my class project, so I'm bitterer than usual. :D

* not real title
** not actually confirmed.

Yep probably. Ya know a lot of people rip on Hip Hop Gamer, but he's alright in book... he was one of the first people to leak small details on the Wii U last year.

I also would like more arcade games for Wii U's digital store. There are so many great arcade titles that should see reissues, Cannon Dancer, Legend of Hero Tonma, Psycho-Nics Oscar, Quake - Arcade Tournament Edition, R-Type Leo to name a few.

The ratio between arcade titles launched on the Japanese Virtual Console (on Wii) over the European and North American Virtual Console is sad. 77 titles in Japan and 18 respectively 19 titles in Europe and North America. If only the Virtual Console could be region free at least.

Nintendo + Android = no way. that OS is weak against patent trolls, no way Nintendo risks its cash by using a potential problematic OS rather than just pay a big company to build one for them.

Hey your forgot the news about Rayman Legends :p

For the bold part, well, i've seen that the "Wii U gameplay ideas" thread is like 6 pages long since nearly one year :( These kind of discussions will surely be more active once the E3 will deliver a lot of footage of titles using the system features well.

I didn't know the amount of Arcade Virtual Console games were so low in Europe and NA. I wonder why Nintendo keeps dropping the ball on VC content. They're kind of doing the same thing on the eShop. Apparently it's been three months since we received a GB VC game. =/

Just to say that the new Rayman, supposedly following Rayman Origins and that may be called "Rayman Legends" (because it will use some fantasy settings with greek mythology, vampires, ghosts, castles, etc, as you can see on a few Kotaku images) is nearly sure to come to Wii U. It's apparently developped by Ubisoft Montpellier.

Now, let's speculate on the padlet use for a 2D platformer. Another angle of what the TV display (i've heard third-parties are found of this kind of DRC utilization) ?

I fully 100% expect Ubisoft to be "all in" at this point. As in, if it's multiplatform the U is getting it. Period. Day and date release. For at least the first year wherever humanly possible. I'm so certain I'd take a "pick my avatar" bet.

Getting back to Rayman, you could mirror the game on the uPad and have context sensitive touch actions for environmental interaction, attacks and whatever else. If done right it'd add a lot of fun to the game.

I, for one, appreciate the game ideas thrown-up thus far, with my favorite one by far being the game were you have one screen showing your view while the second screen shows the view of the predator that's hunting you. I think that's the kind of game that could make me shit my pants; I could see it moving lots of systems if a studio were to make it their big holiday headliner title.

And I'll continue to harp on wanting a RISK game for the U. The idea of playing some all-nighter games with some of you guys sounds fantastic (although I could see my other half getting pissed if I were to blow 10 hours on a RISK game on a Saturday night, haha..)

I'll make a point of coming-up with a game idea this week. Be on the lookout.. it can take some time for me to get started, but once I get a concept and start fleshing it out.. hehe.. fun times, indeed!

(but know that your game ideas aren't overlooked over here in my crazy corner..)

I thought this would be possible for pretty much every game?

One of the complaints about the Wii U presentation last E3 is that it doesn't offer a consistent philosophy. They showed the "guy playing Mario, family wants to watch TV, game action moves to DRC" thing first off, then they started talking about getting multiple views at once with two screens. The concepts cannot always work together. We have no idea how Nintendo will handle this. Sometimes, as in the examples of "inventory on DRC", you can manage it by making the game act old-style when running only on the DRC. But in meaningful examples (as in Psychic Prey or Sword/Shield Combat or even Base Jumper Action Sim) where the DRC takes on a completely separate role and two simultaneous screens are present, you can't just shift to a single screen on a whim.

I counted down 26 days tonight better deliver!

I am not listening to you happy people, I want mo' better news

I find this post somehow awesome.

Thanks for those links.. I now get to forward them to friends in making my case that this "damn" system has great potential for some crazy dope-ass gaming concepts. :P

Ah, whoops. Btw, your speculation there on it coming to Wii U is basically based on the studio that's making the game, am I reading you correctly?

Hmm, maybe I should bump it with some of the stuff posted here recently. Mods won't mind, right?

So the financials came out today, still no official word on when the conference call is?

It is now 2am in Japan. Give these guys a bit of time to wake up. :)

The answer is probably along the lines of: If you had to placate investors, what would be the best time to have them call you up and ask you questions about your business plan? I personally would guess mid-morning (9 or 10) or maybe early afternoon (right after lunch, when they're fed and happy). That equates to 8 or 9 EDT or noonish EDT.

I appreciate your work.

…meltdown averted. I get to keep my account now. :D

De-hypery: The only real caveat here is that these games probably won't be made, but we'll get a lot of HUD on that controller screen! :O

Maybe it's just the pre-hype before e3 but I'm feeling like the Wii U is going to be Nintendo's best system yet. Unfortunately I don't think it's going to sell amazingly like the wii. I'm guessing somewhere in between n64 numbers and wii
