Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

The answer is probably along the lines of: If you had to placate investors, what would be the best time to have them call you up and ask you questions about your business plan? I personally would guess mid-morning (9 or 10) or maybe early afternoon (right after lunch, when they're fed and happy). That equates to 8 or 9 EDT or noonish EDT.
The conference will be held in the morning. I'm not sure whether it's at 9 or 10 JST. Probably the latter.

I'm gonna have to leave at around 6 and won't be back probably until 9ish so hopefully GAF has a nice well organized summary thread where I can read the bombs dropped, just like last time.

I, for one, appreciate the game ideas thrown-up thus far, with my favorite one by far being the game were you have one screen showing your view while the second screen shows the view of the predator that's hunting you. I think that's the kind of game that could make me shit my pants; I could see it moving lots of systems if a studio were to make it their big holiday headliner title.
If made in a nice way with a lot of suggestive themes and so it could surely be a great idea, but if you would take an already existing concept such as Haunting Ground, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis or Clock Tower (especially Clock Tower, at least the first game in the series) I think it would backfire as these games rely heavily on perturbational peripeteias (normally referred to as surprise moments).

One game I could see making good use of a system like this is Silent Hill. Here considering the nature of the enemies, we can use Pyramid Head as an example, there are no clear agendas and it's not like you are constantly chased by something, as in opposition to aforementioned Clock Tower. The controller screen could just show Pyramid Head doing random things (such as assailing those Mannequins in Silent Hill 2) and it'd be equally disturbing as seeing the character lurking after you.

lol at the rumors relayed by some french websites talking about Android on Wii U.
I see some scenarios where it would work. The one that I like is that it's run under a VM on it's own CPU core, and let it manage background things like notifications and downloads and a browser - all the things that Nintendo might not like to build itself. Keep it stripped down, and give it access to scratch space on the flash. Say 128 megs. Downloads will go to the scratch space, and then will be independently verified by Nintendo's OS before any execution is allowed at the NintendoOS level.

The big key here, is that they could theoretically allow this to be the interface for simple games and android ports.

The big worry is that it, like any android phone will get rooted in 2 days flat. They may be able to protect the underlying NintendoOS though. Really depends.

And this is why I love my time zone. :)

Is anyone live tweeting?

Oh, and Android won't happen because one of the results of the patient wars was Android manufacturers having to pay Microsoft a licensing fee.

Bigger than a breadbox but smaller than a supernova, eh?

I personally think it'll beat 50m, but I'd have to see what happens at E3 to see if it has fans by the gonads at all.

They will have fans by the gonads regardless of what happens at E3. If I'm disappointed with the launch lineup or something else I know that some time down the line I'll eventually cave in and buy a Wii U.

I, for one, would love another Clock Tower game as long as it featured scissorman. That game was enjoyable for its classic b-movie cheese first and foremost over any gameplay features. The other killers haven't compared, nor have the stories been as inexplicably intriguing.

I'm curious to know your guestimation of the Wii U's lifetime sales.
Specialguy's would be more entertaining. :p

Worst case is 30-35 million, but I can see it going
as high as 70 million. Most likely, I think it'll do over 45 million, though it's obviously too early to tell.

I'm curious about the DD stuff

downloading full retail games wow

It will be a weird world.

It's convenient, for sure, but i liked the plastic smell of cartridges in the morning & all the sensations tied to physical storage.

For example, between the downloadable version of WoW, and the nicely designed retail boxes, there's a world of differences. But, well, most of us take a look at the manuals & art & documentation one time, then put the thing away...

I've been thinking they might try to work it like w/ film and the theater/home dichotomy. For the big budget titles, at least, they'll release the disc version w/ full packaging; maybe even NFC items. The DD would come a few months later and at a somewhat cheaper cost.

Wii U matching PS3 sales (63+ million LTD) would be decried as an unmitigated disaster by many, just as people snark and snort at the Wii's 95+ million installed base because it started losing steam in its 5th year, as if that proves the Wii was some kind of failed experiment.

Nintendo didn't say they plan on having downloadable retail games at any point in the near futre. Iwata said they were currently trying to think of ways to do it that won't significantly damage retail sales.

I wouldn't expect any implementation at any point in the near future.

It's already happening, though. The 3DS has a few retail games announced for the eShop, just none from Nintendo.

The fact that they included DD sales of "packaged software" in their 3DS and Wii U software projections for the next fiscal year indicates otherwise.

The Guardian (UK newspaper with a bit of an Apple fetish) wants readers comments on why Nintendo failed.... Sigh, it's starting again.

See. It's posts like this that skew everything. The sentence in bold is wrong and as I've said before everyone here has had realistic expectations of Wii U's power since the first dev kit specs were leaked. It's the ones who expect Wii U to be incompetently weak that make those realistic expectations seem farfetched.

I know I'm way behind this whole thing ("morning" guys, lol), but I was surprised nobody posted the Gunpei Yokoi thing there, not that it wasn't already posted a gazillion times already. Wasn't that why he posted that specifically? Or did I just miss it.

Wiki Wooo said:
Yokoi articulated his philosophy of "Lateral Thinking of Withered Technology" (枯れた技術の水平思考?, "Kareta Gijutsu no Suihei Shikou") (also translated as "Lateral Thinking with Seasoned Technology")
[...]
"Withered technology" in this context refers to a mature technology which is cheap and well understood. "Lateral thinking" refers to finding radical new ways of using such technology. Yokoi held that toys and games do not necessarily require cutting edge technology; novel and fun gameplay are more important. In the interview he suggested that expensive cutting edge technology can get in the way of developing a new product.[13]

I really am starting to believe there is indeed some kind of orchestrated agenda with these rediculously samey and endless Nintendo hit pieces. Wait, they're not even good enough to be hit pieces, more like puff pieces.

Wow. Seems like Nintendo can't catch a break.

I hope this also means DS games on eShop.

Heck, there's no real reason NOT to. Everyone knows re-releasing NSMB AGAIN is basically free money.

I never thought about it but they can make a lot of money doing this. It's possible considering DS game sizes aren't even that huge. Release the Pokemon games on eShop. That would be insane.

I really like Nintendo's idea of being able to resell your DD games through their system. They take a little bit of fee (like gamestop would), and you sell directly to others who are trying to buy the game later for a little cheaper. Great idea for a console IMO.

You know what I would like to see on the Wii U? More arcade VC games. Arcade games are probably my favorite. Most of my XBLA purchases were classic arcade titles like TMNT, Pacman, etc. I would love for Capcom and Konami to release their fleet of beat-em-ups on the Wii U VC. To this day I hold my breath for Capcom's Dungeon and Dragon arcade games to make it to the VC. They were amazing and I want to experience both of them again.

I would buy just about all the Capcom CPS games.

We can't get Game Boy games at this point on eShop (three months and counting for NA); I've no hope for DS titles.

The only way to avoid it affecting retail sales in a noticeably way is to price the DD at the same price range as retail copies, or even higher. Basically making it less attractive to buy DD instead of retail. At least i cant see any other solution.
