Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

Actually this might be a good time to ask: What would/should Mario look like on an HD console?

In my opinion SMG graphics in HD with some anti-aliasing would be satisfactory, but what, theoretically speaking, would Mario assets look like on this level of hardware? Maybe something closer to the CG art or just SMG graphics with more rounded models?

Also: I don't even know what framerate Nintendo's first party Wii games run at.

I don't think it'd look dramatically different from Galaxy models, to be honest. Just higher-res and more AA.

Oh man, Pikmin with select options on a touchscreen. That's fucking perfect!
group them, give orders, send them off, make them hum.

In glourious HD!

*yawn* can't wait!

REALISTIC PANTS

Honestly, I do prefer his Galaxy model.

I'm looking forward to Retro's game reveal as well but I don't see that as likely to be their biggest hold back. I think we're going to see a ton of games revealed from Nintendo for launch, launch window, and into next year. I think it could be something totally unexpected too, maybe a new Wario game for example. Multiple AAA titles at launch and launch window. I think Nintendo figures their titles tend to evergreen so they might as well be released in proximity.

Plinko - MK64 was launch window, I don't think it's impossible. I mean, even if not AT launch, could make it right after the holidays.

Edit: wait, a year later? Nevermind.

Yeah, I was referring to how recently Mario Kart 7 came out and the time they'd need to work on the Wii U version. I just don't see it happening.

My guess is we see the next one at holidays of 2014.

Launch title, easily. It's been in development for way too long to miss launch.

My words, you're speaking them. E3 will be a miserable failure for Nintendo in my eyes if Pikmin isn't there.

Edit: Also you gys that bought HDTVs just for the WiiU are either crazy or you don't watch televison. You've literally been missing YEARS of glorious high definition television.

Yeah, keep in mind that while they could rush out a launch window "Mario Kart: U Dash", it would be a lot better for us if they actually spent a full development cycle to make it godly.

Edit2: eh, close enough.
yeah I could see Nintendo showing a whole "things to come" thing to get people hyped. Hell I wouldn't even rule out a Zelda teaser.

This is my most out there prediction but I think the first Zelda game for WiiU will come sooner than people think. I think I saw people in this thread mostly all predict late 2014. Me thinks it could be earlier.

Congratulations! :p
Several pages back ppl talked about "dark" games from Nintendo.
Actually Pikmin is quite "dark" or even "sad" in a lot of means... I don't know how different English version is, but there are lots of "darkness" in Japanese versions. Nintendo even published a video to show how different kinds of Pikmin can die in different situations... yes a video full of "death" from Nintendo itself...

Or helps set the standard of how Wii U's online component should be utilized.

Yeah, SMG looked great, but there was a ton of empty space involved. There's less geometry to calculate when there are relatively very few actual objects in the world you're running around in. A "Galaxy 3" would have a lot more going on.

I'd wager a timing guess:
Holiday 2013: Mario 3D
Holiday 2014: Mario Kart
Holiday 2015: Zelda
Congratulations! :p

I can't stand little Pikmin crying out as they die.. so sad.

I didn't miss out on much, HD is still in it's infancy over here in the UK, we only have 4 HD channels (on freeview) and they only became available last year (i think). I don't watch alot of TV so I couldn't justify paying for a Sky HD sub.

also: genocide/mass suicide is pretty common in pikmin. It always had a strange undertone.

Dito here. Bought my first HDTV, a Panasonic, in January this year mainly because of the Wii U coming. I figured since i'd finished with Zelda my SD gaming days were behind me.

Wow, first HDTV. I'm not the one to trumpet HD graphics but it's hard to play re4 Wii after all the good games on the HD twins. I had a great time on the Wii but I am ready for the Wii u. If that makes sense. Basically, I think ninty was right that we jumped the HD gun based on price alone but under produced with the Wii. If xbox 1 could do 720p then nintendo could have done better with the Wii and included modern shaders and still hit $300. Just my rant.

What did I miss, my fellow loons? NSMB and Pikmin? Anything else over the last week?

Every console generation had a diffrent approach to the 3D Mario franchise.

N64 -> First 3D Mario
GCN -> Sunshine with watergun
Wii -> Galaxy series

Can´t wait to see what they do with WiiUs 3D Mario!

Thanks!

The music played a role in that tone pretty well. Sometimes it contrasted the chaos and death, and other times it served to build it up so that things were even tenser. Really well-done without being too overbearing.

This Pikmin talk is frustrating.

The Mario Universe always had a certain style to it, from what I've seen, and it's pretty consistent at it. Colors generally lean toward high saturated (but not too much) and mostly rounded and "bouncy" sort of shapes.

I think Mario games will benefit from longer draw distances and self shadowing, most likely. But stuff like GI/Color bleeding seems like it's out of the style for Mario. Although I'd like to see stuff like that out of curiousity, I'm betting it deliberately wouldn't be used.

Now a new Yoshi's Island game, however...

Perhaps, but I would very much hope that they didn't take away yet another fantastic local multi game from my arsenal. There are… so few left as it is. :(

For you to specifically say "local" I can tell how you feel. We can only blame the overall direction of gaming for this, though I still see Nintendo holding strong to the local philosophy.

Someone mentioned this a while back but they should make a mario game with crazy shit happening in the distance.

My holiday ruminations are relatively steadfast at:

Holiday 2012: Pikmin Armada
Early/mid 2013: NSMBM
Holiday 2013: Mario Kart: U Dash
Early/mid 2014: Super Mario Adventure (edit: quasi open world game, will be terrible idea but will look amazing)
Holiday 2014: Super Smash Cousins
Holiday 2015: The Legend of Zelda: The Secret of Right Handedness

…I forgot about 3D Mario back then. I'm thinking it can come along after Nintendo's blown its 2D Mario and Mario Kart loads.

I think Nintendo should let you name their games. Perfection.. haha!

That does look nice, but one has to remember the importance of foreground and background when it comes to 2D platformers. If the backgrounds get too bust they may distract the player.

Yes... And those item descriptions. The most memorable one is a very old d-pad and its name is "glorious stone" (directly translated from Jap cuz I didn't play Eng version) and those things related Nintendo... I don't know, it just felt so sad when I read them for the first time or maybe it was because the background music. And you can find a lot of black humors as well.

It looks like they're pushing asymmetric local a lot. This is interesting, but we're exploring one of the areas where I want at least some strong element of "more of the same".

Also, my friends are very resistant to change. I need Nintendo to make truly wireless Classic Controllers for them to play with.

The screen above is not a shot from the game, it's a real-life shot.

Just goes to show how good the eye candy for the PC SKU of Project CARS is when it's difficult to tell the difference between a screenshot and a real life photo. Mind you, I'm guessing you're going to have to have one hell of a beast of a PC to run the game at that IQ at a decent framerate.

I wouldn't get too hyped up about the U SKU tbh, it should blow the PS3 and 360 SKUs out of the water but it's not going to come anywhere near to looking as good as the PC SKU.

The more I talk about it, the more I want to replay it before Launch, as there's a lot that I have forgotten over the years. I might have to do that if they confirm that it is indeed coming.

Not wanting to pay the crazy subscription fees for HD is totally understandable, I've contemplated cutting the cord many times. I'm not at the point where I can give up HBO, Showtime, and sports channels though.

Pikmin is awesome, what's frustrating about it?

Actually, I think that "Pikmin United" would be a genuinely non-jokey good name which both makes sense in the context of that series's universe and plays with the systems so-far not renamed name.

"Pikmin United" makes me think that they are going to chain/coordinate attacks or that several will combine to form Super Pikmin for special moves.

Oh, just me expressing impatience..

What if in Pikmin 3 you play as a regular sized human on the tv and as Olimar on the controller.

Honestly,I'm kinda wondering when humans will make more of an appearance in Pikmin games. Or are they going to be like Niles' wife on Frasier, where they're a constant off-screen character?

I thought the implication was that they were all dead or at least left the planet.

EDIT: Yeah, Pikmin Wiki says that Miyamoto said in an interview that the planet is in a state where "humans are extinct."

I like the later idea, Pikmin powers combine to form the ultimate puzzle solving genius - Captain Miyamoto!

If that human is Miyamoto, then yes, this is a great idea.

That's very good—I wouldn't be surprised if they actually call it that. I've been guessing "Pikmin Earth".

Welp, that explains things. Definitely makes sense.

I just hope that they don't decide to go a route where they expose why the humans are gone. Keep it whimsical.

One thing i've been wondering about. What do you guys expect to see from controller/TV gameplay stuff in single player? I know there will be the more obvious stuff like inventory management and minigames type stuff that is touch based. But will it be any advantages to play something on the controller screen using the analog slider and buttons? (not thinking about streaming the game). Or what else can be done?

Perhaps this was caused by the aforementioned Pikmin Armada. Obvious, it's a prequel where you orchestrate the extinction of Humankind. >_>

Do you think we'll see a different colour Pikmin this time round?
If so, what powers will they have?

Truly is majestic.

If they can deliver a Zelda of this graphical fidelity, all sins will be forgiven.

Edit: I would also accept Star Fox, same conditions.

Once again I have to go back to my RTS/FPS hybrid where you have your base on the controller and you can either help defend it with your guy or go out and do quests and gather resources.

For a planet that has no more humans, those living room "caves" sure are spotless. Guess cleaning solutions were truly perfected in the future.

The best example I've seen so far is a Fatal Frame style game where you only see the ghosts if you life up the DRC and look through it, aiming around like a spirit camera.

The Aliens game, using the DRC as a radar is similar to the default "put the HUD off the main screen!", but it is different enough semantically to make a mention of.

Also I wanted to note that in those games where you do the inventory management on the DRC (like "Resident Evil: Tricell Chronicles"), the game doesn't have to pause and in fact could detect (using the camera) if you're looking down at it, picking the most inopportune times to cause a monster to suddenly creep at you! :D

Also rear view window in racers has been brought up.

edit:

Speaking of aiming the DRC, something akin to that city demo from last E3 would be nice, where you're in a tank, and the main view is the forward view, but you swivel around to shoot at them Russkies while you're going forward. I don't think this one appeals to me specifically, but I can see people liking the feel of being inside the action.
