Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

It's bad enough that it was instantly irrelevant due to Google, but Bing in general had one of the worst marketing campaigns ever. Remember the headache inducing "What has search overload done to us?" commercials?

What was just as annoying was hearing people saying, "Don't know? I'll Bing it!"

It just didn't sound right..

That'a a bummer. I wonder how much in the way of resources the geomoetry and light calculations take etc? Because 70 + 2x480 is still considerably under a 1080p screen in pure pixels.

As you said, engine isn't optimised. If we can, on an optimised engine, get pure graphical sex on 3 views I'll be happy.

It's not really any different than Mario Kart with three players, where instead of one full-sized region, you're rendering to three regions about a quarter full size.

There's nothing that's a bummer about this unless the term "complex" is precisely explained.

I just realized that E3 is the week before final exams. What the schedule this year?

So far all I've seen is this:
Monday, June 4
Microsoft - 9:30 AM
Electronic Arts - 1:00 PM
Ubisoft - 3:00 PM
Sony - 6:00 PM

I kinda like watching the bad conferences. It's like looking at a train wreck in progress (the reactions on the internet are also a plus).

Such goodness. The reactions online are the gifts that will keep on giving, for years and years. We'll have "I remember where I was" moments - not only from good conferences, but also bad ones. Who could forget Sony's 2006 funnyfest? Such such goodness!

We'll get 20 minutes of a really boring part of CoD:BO2, then some Kinect pre-recorded garbage, then a tease of some game that will likely not exist, then 30 minutes of Halo 4, then more Kinect garbage.

Throw in some light Xbox3 teases and I'm sold. Maybe announce RE6/AC3/other random multi-plat has Kinect support, just for good measure.

If there's one thing better than an amazing conference, it's a terrible conference we can make fun of for years to come.

Meanwhile, Nintendo's conference U Reggie is saying;

'Super Mario 4 for Wii U/3DS cross-play, Metroid Dread 3DS, Donkey Kong Country Returns 2 3DS, The Lone Ranger, Star Fox: Upwind, F-Zero Ultra, Smash Bros. Ultimate, Wave Race Thunderstorm, Legend of Zelda: Mist of Ages 3DS, Yoshi's Island by Good Feel, Pokemon Battle: U, Kingdom Hearts 3, Megaman Returns, Capcom VS Nintendo, Pikmin 3, Haptics and Vitality sensor built into the controller and Santa Claus is real and giving blow jobs in our booth. Peace out.'

;)

Woah wut?
Also..
Reggie would NEVER say peace out. This is false.

E3 Prediction Time
The Wii U controller will fail during every stage demo. Miyamoto's enthusiasm for Pikmin 3 will give way to a look of frustration and confusion, and a nervous Bill Trinen will repeatedly tell the audience to turn off their phones and tablets.

Which was a stark contrast to this comic:

lol, won't be a problem because of the wire.

"Developers, developers, developers, developers! Developers developers, developers developers...."

As predictable as the CoD demo is, at least they are smart in how they cut it "win the interest of time" to show us the goods.

BF3 at EA last year had way too much tank.

Horrible conferences are the best, unless it means something I really want isn't shown/announced.

I still go back to read through parts of the 2008 "Chris Remo Saves E3" thread, so many amazing gifs and meltdowns after the disastrous Wii Music/Cammie conference. Unfortunately it looks like the amazing Monty Python/Life of Brian 'Wait there's also a Pikmin game!' gif Mama Robotnik made back in the day no longer exists unless someone saved it.

E3 Prediction Time
The future is wires! Wired controller, ethernet internet (no Wii-fi!), and a variety of wired attachments, including the vitality sensor. Nintendo's E3 megaton is the ability to use the DRC screen as a universal remote control. To achieve this, you must attach all of the remotes in your house to it via wires.

The thing is, I find it hysterical - no matter what company prodices that kind of comedy. I mean.. who at Nintendo thought that this was a good idea? Hehe..

It was a year that Nintendo thought that they could use E3 to try and further their casual appeal...
Which backfired horribly, because casuals don't give a shit about E3 and it basically did nothing to help them with any games.

Some infos concerning the padlets

In a v4 dev kit context, with third-party involved, ports & titles using inhouse engines (not really tailored for the Wii U), the system hasn't the capacities to render 1 720p complex content on the TV, and 2 480p intricate scenes at the same time, with a good enough framerate. The "v5" dev kits won't change this situation. And i really don't think that with first-party, it will be a totally different outcome.

Now, 1 light 720p content (a ranking list, a 2D map, etc.) + 4 480 not ultra detailed with to-the-roof poly count titles, well, the hardware may handle that (i'm talking about rendering capabilities here, not streaming possibilities).
If rumors of these kits supporting 2-4 tablet controllers are true, then this is good news.
No, he's talking about the system producing three different complex scenes, one at 720p and two as 480p. However the controller screens don't have to be used for complex or unique scenes, so in other circumstances 2 or more controllers should be usable.

Also it could be that while a third party engine not optimised for WiiU can't do three complex scenes at once an optimised engine may be able to. Building an engine that's tailored to the hardware can make one hell of a difference to performance.

The resource drain of using the controller screen comes down to what the developer decides to use it for. He can theoretically use from 0 to 100% of the systems resources on the controller, so wether use of the controller screen will jeopardize something like 1080p support just comes down to what the developer decides to use those resources for.
Isn't optimization true for any console? I'd expect most of the troubles developers go through is dealing with the way each hardware takes care of certain functions, so it only makes sense developers really won't come to grips with the hardware's real performance until they figure out how things work, and that usually comes around second generation of its lifespan. And figuring out workarounds is not out of the question. I was kinda amazed by how much devs pushed the DS at the end of its lifespan.

What's old is new again! Yay!

I'm glad that they found out sooner rather than later. We'd be looking at a very different conference if they had not gotten that wake-up call.

They found out pretty much immediately.
Again, they actually apologized for it.
That is unheard of.
Though, I am curious if they'll try and bring out their new marketing director this E3.

I have it, but that thing's 8MB :P

Link me to the thread, so I can subscribe to it lol.

I'm sure this is known/irrelevant/pointless, but I remember there being news that nintendowiiu.com, nintendowii-u.com and wiiu.com didn't (and still don't, seemingly) belong to Nintendo, but wii-u.com did. Still find it curious.

Microsoft don't seem to get it... Look at their awful E3 Kinect Disneyland Adventures promo...
It's weird though, despite this, you never see people calling the Xbox a "kiddy console", like you do with Nintendo...

He posted it a few days ago in the Pikmin E3 thread.

I didn't have a GAF account then, but I was lurking and it was indeed a hilarious time.

Yeah you're probably right, I overreacted. I guess I was hoping to be able to get "real nice" graphics on the main screen and at least 2 "real nice" pad scenes rendered. I was wondering if that basically means we won't be able to get "real nice" 1080 due to the pixel count.

However the term "real nice" is to subjective and vague that it's pointless until we see some stuff in action.

Ouch, that does suck. I would've liked to have watched Nintendo's 2006 conference, but, at that time, I wasn't into all the internet gaming forums/news stuff yet.

Just think that you're never be able to experience the true glory of watching the Twilight Princess reveal live. I pity you and all your kind.

I actually like that Nintendo is willing to publicly apologize when they have messed-up so badly, be it with the 3DS or the crappy E3 conference. Kinda refreshing.

This takes me back to the conviction that I have: that no matter what they do, no matter what games they release, no matter what catchphrases their spokespersons come-up with.. Nintendo will always be cast as "the family-friendly gaming company." Which equals "kiddy" in a lot of pseudomature folks' minds.

I was nearly sleeping, but i know this thread, if i wait tomorrow to post an answer to your two messages concerning my padlet info, i would have to read 15 new pages & all :p

So, as explained many times, it's a continuation of the data i've gathered, nearly all that i write is linked, so when i say "complex" & "intricate", just refer to older messages of mine, and you'll see that i'm talking about 3D scenes, current gen HD games, and more precisely, 2012 current gen good looking titles.

The Wii U can't handle, in a v4 dev kit / third party ports & games using inhouse engines context, 1 720p current gen content + 2 480p current gen content. It's managing correctly (with a good enough framerate, but i'm talking 25/30 fps here, not 60) 1 720p current gen content+++(again, i've explained what kind of +++ you can expect thanks to the more powerful capacities/more modern architecture) and 1 480p "current gen" content (i use marks because obviously, it's in 480p, but it's still intricate, not just an inventory, it's a real different view of the main scene). It's reassuring in my opinion, because these already solid performances were before the slight improvements coming with the V5 dev kit, 2 revisions before the actual SDK, more optimizations of their own engines, and tons of other parameters that can only get better.

I hope i'm crystal-clear :p

And now, it's bed time !!!!!!
