At least THEY acknowledged it and apologized for it. Microsoft sure didn't.
It's a momentum thing. Nintendo was already on the "Hey, we're not for you" end of the spectrum for a large number of gamers, and that E3 made them more the enemy.
Microsoft was the super shooter sports system seller, so their terrible and disrespectful E3 just edged them closer towards neutral territory. They'd have to have a few in a row before people stop giving them the benefit of the doubt.
