Apparently people have gotten significantly stupider than the NES --> SNES days.
Heck, even the GB(C) --> GBA days.
EDIT: To make my point clear, the name is not as important as the marketing. 3DS was marketed as another DS model, to its detriment. Wii U was positioned poorly at e3 (although one would question the intelligence of people who listened to the entire conference and still thought it wasn't a new console) but if they market it more clearly as a new console from now on and pump the message during pre-launch, the name shouldn't be too much of a problem.
