Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Here's some cheer: I agree with you, but NO ban bets!

Losing uber would've sucked, as would losing you. Gotta have y'all around for E3!

Seriously though, I was bricking it as GDC neared closer, only just got away with it.

I'll be prepared to say Pikmin 3 will be a lunch title, though. Think that's ban bet-able.

Oh, and I'm hoping the Wii U will be compatible with the latest version of Flash, and have a Youtube channel that actually works. Seriously hinders online browsing if not.

If you listen to Apple, flash is "in the past"

Someone on a French message board claiming to have a source with access to a dev kit.

French? Veerrry interesting..

I really hope you're right about P3. I'm guessing that the game has to be near-ready.. right? Enemy design, story, level design..all pretty easily done by now. If forced to speculate (!), I wonder if they're still tweaking the interface and controls to optimize with the new system? Or maybe they're adding an F-Zero GX-amount of extra content (i.e., a ton!) ? Or maybe QA/QC testing?

Something has gone fundamentally wrong if it's still not ready this year.

Alright I've been very sick for the last 12-16 hours, because of food poisoning, i think, i'm starting to feel better now, but this thread has grown by 9-10 pages since I last looked.

Being serious, not much. No definite developments, although there's a new rumor from a French forum within the past 24 hours that an NDA (maybe more than one?) will expire on Monday (I think?), and we're wondering if we'll get a sliver of new info from that expiration.

We're getting dangerously close to April Fools' Day, and I don't want to see this place fall into further turmoil then. Keep alert, and stay skeptical..

Plant Meat is Murder! *splashes Pikmin blood on you*

And thus, a brilliant ad campaign is born. Especially considering Nintendo's past with PETA..

Mario Meets Zelda co-op(up to 8 people) RPG/Action title from Retro and Valve.

David Wise handling the soundtrack.

What if Nintendo included a tiny pico projector in the Upad?

Its' main purpose won't be to output neither the TV nor the Upad stream, but a third stream dedicated for specific stuff (maps and maybe simple 3D), so specs (resolution, etc) wouldn't matter that much.

Has pico tech matured enough to be mass-produced at low cost, with acceptable results?

Could WiiU's GPU (whatever the consensus is on this one) output to more than two "screens"?

And finally, could the stream received from the console include information for two outputs? (and get decoded to two separate signals by the padlet's processor)

(It's funny that a while ago I was posting about devs not using the UPad screen to "save" power for main screen (TV) output, and now I'm proposing speculating about a third screen.
It's all Nintendo's fault.....the built-up to E3 is driving us crazy!!!)

It appears The ESA is making the floor plans for E3 ready, though their hub appears a bit glitchy (cache prevented me from loading it etc.). When I asked them about when the floor plans would be uploaded, they just said "in the coming months", though on the E3 website it says the floor plans are "coming in Spring 2012". Well, the vernal equinox happens today (in the northern hemisphere anyway), so perhaps they are early this year.

If it doesn't load, flush your cache and cookies.

Seeing how much entertainment we got from the GDC floor plans, E3 shouldn't disappoint when it comes to that. Nintendo is in booths 4822 and OFMR5244.

Thanks for the update, man!

well, adobe did stop development on flash for mobile. I'm thinking it will be phased out in ~5 years

Epic wants to port UE to Flash. Many games are still made in Flash. Every major site still uses Flash and has to develop special transcoders for streaming video/HTML5 for Apple's stubbornness.

If you were a game developer making games for iOS, would you want the iPad to be able to play free Flash games?

Thanks, Rösti - you really are our Professor Layton, gentleman investigator! Time to snoop around..

Speaking of snooping around, I've been hanging out at a Nintendo news site, going through the site's archives around the first half of 2006 (like I said - I love pre-launch history. Always fascinating!). When comparing/contrasting the flow of information prior to the Wii's release with now for the Wii U, I'm struck by the difference. The lack of info looks even more dramatic when viewed through this scope. Devlopers talking about the games they're working on, rumored Twilight Princess controls, etc etc.

I kind of like no info, it puts more pressure on them to be dramatic at E3.

The more I go through the archives, the more I notice that April is when things really begin to take-off in terms of media coverage, actual info, developers openly talking, etc etc.

This place could start to become very different in just a few weeks.

(and that pigeon reminds me of a spazz I worked with at another hospital several years ago. bad memories..)

saw this earlier.

my gues: NDA LIFTED!!!! "We do something for Wii U....sorry can't tell more! *smile*"
Lifting some NDAs in late March would make sense, though. Fiscal years end, companies will want to tell their shareholders about future opportunities. Probably even more true for suppliers.

Xbox 360 did decently at $400.
It had a $300 option, and I think Nintendo would be pretty disappointed if their first year was closer to Xbox 360 than Wii.
Wii_WW

Even limiting things to Xbox's strongest region, the way X360 performed in 2006 is more like how Wii is performing in 2011/2012.

The storage capacity make me asking another quetion: Have the disc media already be discussed? All we know is from the E3 2011 fact sheet, and describe it as a high-density 12cm proprietary optical disc. I'm thinking of something in-between a regular DVD and a HD-DVD. Will a proprietary disc with "only" 10GB per layer be a problem?
The early rumors that were right about the controller screen and all also said it was basically Blu-ray, with minimum 25 GB. And yes, absolutely some needless all-new format that couldn't hold as much per disc as PS3 would be a problem.

Oh my. Cookychan and EloquentM (perma)banned? This is depressing. Maybe it's just going to get crazier in here as E3 approaches.

On the brighter note, NDA's being lifted? and wsippel agrees? WE HAVE HOPE!

Alright - I did a quick summary of what happened in April 2006. It's a good idea to keep in mind for reference when thinking about how Nintendo conducts their information campaign during these time periods.

So.. let's walk down memory lane..

April 2006 Revolution News Highlights:
- rumored Bob Ross Game
- Twilight Princess: not known yet, but rumors discussing two versions were bandied-about
- Tony Hawk: Downhill Jam was rumored to be for launch
- Red Steel (including screenshots, interviews, and magazine scans)
- on the 15th, Matt from IGN revealed that Metroid Prime 3 would be playable at E3
- the first rumor of Sega releasing Nights on Revolution surfaced late in the month
- rumor of a Suda51/Grasshopper game to be unveiled at E3
- Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi 2 revealed to be a Revolution game
- THQ revealed that they were bringing two Nickelodeon titles to the Revolution
- first rumors of the nunchuck having some motion-sensing feature(s)
- Elebits confirmed
- Skatto Golf Pangya Revolution
- Sega formally announces Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
- Activision formally announces Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for Revolution
- on April 28, 2006: the Revolution's name was changed to Wii!

If Nintendo follows the Wii information release model, it looks like April is going to be a huge month for us here in the thread. =)

reasonable HYPE!

Oh I know, but there's a strong 299 crowd. It can always drop to that price later.

Can't there be two models: one at 299, one at 349? Difference could be larger harddrive for the core users.

I know Nintendo doesn't usually go down this path but they've done it before, right? Was it the SNES?

You actually remembered all that?

HYPE!

This is what Nintendo Gamer magazine says about the Wii U name.

They think that it's unlikely that the name will change, considering that Nintendo continued to push the "Wii U" brand for the January CES, and the GDC.

Can't there be two models: one at 299, one at 349? Difference could be larger harddrive for the core users.

I know Nintendo doesn't usually go down this path but they've done it before, right? Was it the SNES?

The NES also had several SKUs.

Here's my long-held belief: Nintendo Juicy™ launches at $350. Nintendo faithful will buy it at that price and carry it through the first holiday season easily.

Then, when the 720 or PS4 launch, a price drop. Components will be cheaper then also, so perhaps it'll be profitable by that point.

(nah.. I remembered some, but there's a great-but-banned-from-NeoGAF news site that collects Nintendo news. I skimmed through that month's Revolution-tagged articles.)

It sucks we don't have Matt from IGN anymore. :( I miss seeing him drop us hints about what to expect at E3.

If Wii U gets a name change, that's going to send shockwaves through the internet. I hope they do change the name, but I doubt it.

I think the cheap model will be the 349. Now, the 3DS' initial performance may make them change their mind and release at 299, I just see that as really underpriced. At the very worst they can drop it to that price with an ambassador program again if it tanks but I just don't see it tanking.

Hm, don't think so. They're not likely to give up on one of their most prolific platforms. Don't see it happening any time soon.

Yeah, true - if it's not out this year, then I'm not sure how the final game will be. They've had so much time to rebuild this game for the Wii U and optimise it for the uPad.

Plant Meat is Murder! *splashes Pikmin blood on you*

Haha! Brilliant!
Note to self: no more typos.

Matt was probably the best at getting leaks to us right on the eve of E3. I loathe IGN and the other large gaming news sites, but he was damn good at this kind of stuff, so he was a bigger loss than many realize. It seemed like he always had something good for us on that weekend before the festivities began.

Keep in mind that E3 was a month earlier in 2006, though.

Holy shit.. you're right.

If anything, this means we'd see more info in less time.

Unless Nintendo is really going with a "hey-let's-starve-the-fans-for-news" gambit.

---

And Disorientator, you're gonna have my mind spinning for those final secrets again!

and the flood gates were opened, because the hype could not be contained.

Let's do this.

Now, is it a platform wide NDA - as in, "guys (developers), you can talk a bit about your Wii U games now everyone", or as in, "Ubisoft, you can talk about his one game now".

Hm, hope it's the first.

Getting lots of little leaks, teasers and screens would be nice on the run up to E3. A trailer here and there to sweeten things up, getting to know about real games etc. and screenshots peppered around the months to allow us to speculate the power of the machine... mmm.

Maybe then with all this third party hype, nintendo can drop some first party bombs at E3? RETRO ZELDA, BOOM.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that Nikkei will publish the firsts leaks and a week later Iwata will confirm several things in one of his upcoming keynotes.

And Nintendo could say, "screenshots only, developers. People will wait until E3 to see the games in motion."

If they have a truly earthshattering secret regarding the controller, they could also say: "No controller screenshots."

If there's one thing I'm not worried about, it's whether or not Nintendo will have enough secrets leftover..
