Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

That's not actually a thing.

It's probably ~ an order of magnitude, give or take, imo.

So 4x isn't it, 1.5x definitely isn't, but 8x-12x is.

Also, who's going to be funding these games that are leaps and bounds more complex and expensive than AAA PS360 titles already are? Will we see a lot of them? Do you think publishers are going to be taking a lot of risks with these games, going the unique yet unproven route? Or are they basically going to make prettier versions of the same stuff we've been playing for over a decade now? When is that ever going to get old?

Has it gotten old for, the previous six generations dating back to the 70's? Because it's basically the history of video games.

2008 interview with Denis Dyack

At beginning of video, Denis shows interview a picture of a group of guys who work at Nintendo.

At 4:20 he's asked if Nintendo or Silicon Knights owns the Eternal Darkness IP and whether Eternal Darkness is a series.

Denis Dyack responds, "It's not time to talk about those things for various reasons. Nintendo is still our silent partner. A lot of people don't know that. We have a great relationship with those guys."

The interview keeps pressing asking if ED2 is possible and Denis keeps responding,
"It's a complicated question with a complicated answer and we're not answering the question."

I think his hesitation to answer the questions tell me that there's a small chance Eternal Darkness 2 is in development.

Also this was in 2008 so things can always change.

The game really is a perfect fit for the Wii U controller since the original title relied so much on its menu system to equip and enchant weapons as well as cast spells.
Yeah, I remember a lot of dropping in and out of menus. ED could be a lot more tense if you had to handle all of that stuff in real time on the subscreen while monsters are about. Sanity effects messing with that screen could really fuck you up!
If I see a new Eternal Darkness at E3, I am going to very happy.
Seriously, if an ED2 trailer plays at the press conference I will freak the fuck out.

If SK are able to deliver a game as good as the original ED under Nintendo's guidance, could they become a second party again? It would serve Nintendo very well to have at least two western teams that are focused on older-skewing traditional games outside of Nintendo's usual wheelhouse, and if Nintendo are willing to give them a reasonable amount of freedom, being supported by Nintendo might be what Silicon Knights need for their future to be assured after the troubles they've been going through.

Perhaps the only way to evade the Nintendo Curse is to convince the beast itself to call it off.
TEAR ARETAK CHATUR'GHA!
This gave me a warm glow.
EDIT:
What about Eternal Darkness, 3DS edition? Smaller team and you could do some fun things with the 3D.
Nah. It would be a waste on 3DS. Putting it on Wii U could actually make a statement.
"Nintendo is still our silent partner. A lot of people don't know that."
AAAAWWWW YEEEAAAAH

Well he says the game they are working on is for next gen hardware. Also, given Iwata's comments in the recent Fatal Frame interview, it seems like he believes that home consoles are the better option for true horror games.

Also in 2008:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/strong-chance-eternal-darkness-will-return-but-will-it-be-for/

Now, Silicon Knights' Dennis Dyack has commented that there is a pretty good chance his company will be returning to the IP for another title. "There is a chance; we love all the games we work on," he commented. "We don't want to be pigeon-holed [into a genre], we want to be known for strong content...There's a strong chance we'll return to it, but there's no announcements yet." So, good news for fans of the first title, however this is likely going to be a sore spot for some of you. Even though they remain open to developing a game for the Wii, with their work on the Too Human trilogy, the likelihood of that happening is probably pretty slim right now.

.....so Eternal Darkness 2 is basically confirmed huh. Gaf mystery squad in full force.

.....or Dennis Dyack (banned from GAF) thinks people are looking forward to Too Human 2?

As long as we can rule out 100 percent sure that Silicon Knights is not doing anything Blood Omen related (which im sure they arent since crystal dynamics/Eidos own that) , then it's pretty obvious that its Eternal Darkness 2 if its "Silicon Knight's most requested".

Dyack talks about the company "going back to its roots" too so that's something to think about. The company recently got a grant from Canadian government.

Provincial funding

In July 2011, Silicon Knights was awarded $2.5 million to be distributed over five years in provincial funding to improve its technology, create new products and become a self-publishing company. The investment will allow the company to improve its technology, hire 80 new people while keeping 97 current jobs and allow the company to become "self sustaining." As of Nov 5, 2011, Silicon Knights had not received any of this funding. Not sure if things have changed since then.

Oh and Kojima's advice better not fuck up Eternal Darkness 2:

Interview from 2007

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/interview/14053

Dyack: I think that's a really good question. The bottom line for a lot of the stuff is, a lot of the gameplay and a lot of the things that we learned from Miyamoto-san have gone into Too Human. I felt when we worked with Miyamoto-san and when we worked with Kojima-san, it was like going to school. The controls and where we're at with that, we've just spent so much time on that and so much focus testing, that I think when people play it they would feel quite comfortable and at home, that it qualifies for something that would be coming from Nintendo. I think the gameplay is there and, you know, it'll speak for itself when it's out. Going to Kojima-san, when I first spoke to him, we also talked about Eternal Darkness a lot, and I also consider Eternal Darkness kind of our Blade Runner, tremendously critically acclaimed but not a huge box office hit, but the fact that many people in this industry-- we still have people in the games industry coming up to us saying "I wish I could make a game like Eternal Darkness." When I talked to Kojima-san about it, his biggest criticism was that there wasn't action in the first 20 minutes or half an hour. So we've taken all the lessons that we've learned from Kojima-san and man, there's a lot of stuff happening in Too Human right away. I think that the production value in the cinemas, we learned so much from Kojima-san. Imagine combining that with sort of the gameplay with Miyamoto-san and sort of the traditional storytelling content direction that we come from-- I think people will really be excited. It's taking all the eastern philosophy that we learned by working with those masters, and using it in something that I think is digestible for people anywhere around the world. I just can't be more excited about that, and I think if we really, really have succeeded, time will tell. I really want to get your opinion of it once you play it, but I think it's going to be a fusion like no other game we've ever made and I think it wins in all categories. You probably remember Henry Sterchi. Jonny, do you remember him? He was at Nintendo of America for a long time. He was the producer on Eternal Darkness.

That's a worrying quote. I loved the slow burn intro in Eternal Darkness. The creepiness of the mansion and the eventual first enemy encounters would be damaged if the game immediately thrust you into action.

The one thing I like about Eternal Darkness was having Miyamoto around to give advice on the project constantly. I am hoping Miyamoto is around to make sure Eternal Darkness 2 stays on the right track if it's really coming.

Silicon Knights just needs supervision from Nintendo. That's what they were lacking with their most recent games, Too Human, and X:Men Origins.

If Too Human was made with Nintendo supervising, I think things would have been more different. Maybe Nintendo would have shot down some ideas, and the game would be better focused and balanced.

I love Miyamoto but if I was on a team I wouldn't want the man or his opinions anywhere near my project...too much sway and his superseding opinions and all. Miyamoto should be developing his own games, over his own team, not being the opinion guru on everybody's game.

Hopefully his 'retirement' means he'll go back to directing soon.

Both of the lead game designers for ED have left SK. There's no telling what other major players from that game have left or been fired. So a sequel will likely run into much bigger problems than Kojima's potential influence on them.

Yeah, I've been doubting if SK have it in them to make a game of ED's quality any more. I think it could happen if they sell their souls to Nintendo and allow them to take the reigns and upend some tea tables, but I doubt they will.

How much would you pay to see Nintendo's E3 conference right now, assuming you were under NDA?

I'd probably drop $20 for the sneak peek. Maybe up to $30.

Those new Darksiders 2 screens are supremely underwhelming. Games on the 360/PS3 right now look better than that.

Of course, a half assed third party effort isn't indicative of the true capabilities of the Wii U, but still...

You need to get your eyes checked, man.

Those are gorgeous.

I haven't played Eternal Darkness yet. Is it really that great? Note I'm not that big a fan of horror games and I've already heard quite a bit of how ED tries to mess with you.

I'd still be happy with 2-3x the X360 overall for Wii U.

That's what I've been expecting this whole time. Maybe up to 4x at most if the rumour that Nintendo upped the latest dev kit.

Quite a few people are setting themselves up for disappointment at having Samaritan or all UE4 games being able to be ported over. I'm expecting once devs can fully exploit the Xbox Fusion/PS4's power, some games will not be ported to Wii U due to lack of enough power to run at 720/30.

Devs could probably be able to port it at lower rez (similar to BF3/Witcher 2 running on the vastly inferior PS360 hardware when compared to PC) due to scalability of engines and similar graphics paradigm (ie. not the TEV shaders in GC/Wii). However, I doubt devs are going to put enough effort to do this, unless Wii U has such a massive userbase that they can't ignore.

Nah my bad I wasn't clear on it, there was a CG trailer and those screen shots.

Bigger versions here: http://www.gamersyde.com/news_darksiders_2_cgi_trailer_screens-12650_en.html

Either way, they aren't "leaked" WiiU shots. Although I assume the WiiU version would probably look like that anyway.

I think they already confirmed that the Wii U version will be exactly the same
As the PS360 version ( graphic wise) but the use of the Wii U controller will make it
the best version

If you guys are talking about the alleged Wii U Darksiders 2 screens:

Looks gorgeous but probably bullshots/PC version.

A lot of people complain about the artstyle, but overall it's pretty good. My biggest problem with it is the giant forearms and hands of every character. Makes me think they're trying too hard to be beefy and manly. Reminds me of Pop-eye, but without the fun.

Hm I haven't heard that, perhaps you could find a source? That wouldn't really make sense given their statements after E3 either.

Yeah, I have to imagine that with the extra power in the box, they will at least upgrade the resolution and lighting, it would make a lot of sense to add textures from the PC version too, since Wii U will definitely have more ram.

Yes. It's awesome. Controls are okayishm but hohoho those sanity effects.

If ED 2 is announced, I will scream like a little girl.

Not sure if this is true but this was posted earlier by ozfunghi:

Has this been posted?

http://www.gamereactor.se/nyheter/43021/GRTV:+Darksiders+II-intervju/

- launch title
- have no release date from Nintendo
- "on par" with current gen
- not doing anyrhing on wiiu to get higher polycount, better res or textures, but want to make use of controller
- got it running quickly on wiiu

If true, they really are lazy as shit.

Not sure if this is true but this was posted earlier by ozfunghi:

That is the director of the game, so it's true... right after the 3 minute mark he starts talking about the Wii U version, it will visually be on par with the current generation, that the dev kits have also been pretty much on par with what we have now (ps3/360) even if that last statement is definitely not accurate, we can tell from what he is saying that it will not be a large jump, but seeing as how they don't have final dev kits at the time of this video, he doesn't know everything either... Still, there is no reason that the textures couldn't be improved and that they can't improve the lighting, especially when they have 3 more months with it, maybe even more.

It's a bit frustrating from our perspective, because we saw the bird demo, we can tell that it is a step up from what the PS360 can do, no one believes that it is a giant leap, but we know somethings, like that the console has over 1GB of ram, 32MB of edram on the GPU, shader version 4+ and 1Tflops+ of processing power, a modern CPU... I mean, I even believe special guy's assessment from months ago as being pretty accurate for Wii U, even if he is probably wrong about PS4 and Xbox3.

That the current consoles = PSP, Wii U = 3DS, and where I think he is probably wrong is PS4/Xbox3 is Vita level...

Ok, this thread just got exciting again. All those hints pointing to a new Eternal Darkness actually makes me happier than a trailer for a new Zelda would right now. The original is top three on Gamecube togehther with Wind Waker and Metroid Prime.

Ok, let's imagine.

New Eternal Darkness at e3.

Story, scenario, characters and game ideas by Silicon Knights.

Game development by Retro.

How does that make you feel?

I could see this happening. A Silicon Knights + Retro Studios collaboration.

Interesting... Would anyone here complain if this was Retro's project?

I could see Retro aiding SK with a smaller team but I don't think they would take on the development on their own. Seems like a waste by Nintendo. Silicon Knights can pull it off with some guidance and house that made Prime seems like the perfect guide if Nintendo wants to target the western market and appeal to the core. This premise would be very exciting indeed.
