Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Where is this news of xbox360-2 being 10-15x Wii U?

-----

Does the Wii U have a chipset that would impress a time traveler from the year 2010? That's all I want to know.

Sooo...

1996 (N64) >> 1999 >> (DC) = 3 years and a 10-fold increase in performance.

That comes out to to 3.3 times more power for each year.

2005 (360) >> 2012 (Wii U) = 7 years and a 2-fold increase in performance.

That's a 0.28 increase in power for every year. How is that possible? (This is a fucking nightmare).

Dreamcast was released in 1998.

It'll be the only microwave with an AMD processor and ram.

Or would it...

Indeed. I think we're practically guaranteed to have laughs and drama in all directions. The word "shitstorm" comes to mind.

BTW.. did you catch my fantasy E3 teaser?

It's gonna be Reggie's "one last thing" this year!

Just throw in the old sound effect for Mica contacting Mike telepathically and that's the E3 moment of the ever for me right there. :lol

Okay lets say that the next Xbox really was 9 or 10x more powerful than the 360, should we be afraid?

I mean the IGN article seems to be wrong about Wii U being 5x more powerful so that means its probably wrong about next Xbox being 6x more powerful.

Microsoft has the money to get whatever they want. They can take losses better than other companies.

If that was the case then I'd expect things to look like this:

360---WiiU---720.

70 days today until E3! And while this ain't much, two new exhibitors have been added to product categories at E3:

Havok is filed under:

3D Development - Nintendo Wii U
Developer Tools - Nintendo Wii U

http://havok.com/

Nothing special there, since we already know Havok entered into a worldwide license agreement with Nintendo for Havok Physics and Havok Animation earlier this month.

Virtuos is filed under:

Casual Games - Nintendo Wii U
Mobile Apps - Nintendo Wii U

http://www.virtuosgames.com/

Virtuos is a Chinese outsourcing company for graphic design, programming, level design, co-development and QA, and it's one one of the largest providers of these services in the industry. They've been contracted by Activision, Electronic Arts, LucasArts, Sony, Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Zynga and more. What exactly they are doing in relation to a Wii U game I don't know, it could be concept art to programming. Anyway, it says casual games so I'm gonna guess they are doing work for Electronic Arts or Ubisoft.

We always lagging behind... =/
Sometimes it's really hard to be a Nintendo fan u___u

I'm going to try hard to invest in at least one of the other guys next time hope I have the money but I've been a nintendo only gamer for a very long time, and know better than to look at the other guys.

its not a good place to be so if you can afford it buy other platforms too

I was enjoying GTA Vice City and San Andreas recently on my macbook so I know sooner or later I'll play the Witcher, Skyrim and Saint Row or other things I've missed out on

its not the hardware I want from Nintendo but the software

If Nintendo software was available any other place then my purchase choice would be easier

every ten I have to think about money for 3 platforms

- Nintendo home Console (5 years)
- Nintendo Portable (3-4 years)
- and my Mac update (3 years)

So if MS could give me a really strong reason to squeeze in just one more platform by putting something out in 2013 that is 15x WiiU - YES PLEASE if its $399

Having read posts in this thread (well threads) over the last few months, I think Nintendo have been looking for at most a 3-fold increase in power over the Xbox360 - which should be enough gorgeousness graphically to put most folks minds at ease.

Regards

When i promise something, i always deliver my little teddy bear :p
I just wanted to be sure that this info wasn't given already, and by saying "i try to catch-up before posting", i had some nice summary that avoided me to read through tons of new pages :p

And for your conclusions about the hardware, really, don't expect too much from it, but don't be disappointed in advance. From all i've heard, the guts aren't on par with current gen at all, and there's so much room for improvements, optimizations, and potential stretching of the Wii U capabilities that you'll say wow many times in front of your screen (for first-party titles in the first place obviously). I bet a video of myself running disguised as a Nintendo character in a Paris street by night that it will be the case :p

I think people have taken the "on par" part of that quote too literally - if it was indeed an accurate statement. I don't think it was meant to mean "exactly equivalent" as some people decided to take it.

Continuing with vague analogies would you personally consider it "in the ballpark" of the current generation HD consoles in terms of overall hardware power/performance though? Or out of the park.

Also is it normal for specifications to still be in flux and developers to not have final targets ~5-8 months prior to a system's release?

Definitely a little more than $399. This is starting to reach towards the lower end processing servers on my rack.
Well, a 15-fold increase in power over Wii U would probably put such a system beyond an IBM Power 750 Express (excluding excessive amounts of Ethernet ports and similar of course) even, and that starts on a 4-core 3.7 GHz POWER7 format with 8 GB RDIMM DDR3, with power requirements of 200 V to 240 V ac. US starting list price is $23,739.00, though that of course incorporates a lot of things the normal consumer would have no use of, so a theoretical Xbox console with specs beyond these would probably be cheaper. And not to forget, default weight of this system is 120.0 lb (54.4 kg). I'd like to see a soccer mom pull that from her bag for her five year old son to play Call of Duty on.

Thanks for the info, could you elaborate on how the guts aren't on par with current Gen but we'll say wow? Is the extra room for optimizations and such related to the efficiencies of newer technologies (DX10 vs DX9 for ex.) or optimization that could still be done with the dev kits? Sorry, not quite sure how to read your post.

Well let me give you an example.

Do you think we will continue doing 5 year generations?

Or will Xbox 720/PS4 be 10 year generation? If you're packing 9 or 10x more power than the current gen consoles, do they really need to put out a console every 5 years?

If the hardware proves profitable, companies will keep it on the shelf for however long it sells well, regardless of power. The ps4 and 720 won't be 15x more powerful, don't worry =P

Let the Wii U speculation continue!

Well we've compared consoles in terms of DBZ characters, might as well do the same in cooking devices.

So the PS4 will obviously be another grilling machine, Nextbox is a microwave. The way people talk about Nintendo devices, it could only be a Chad Valley electronic foldaway play kitchen.

Oh developers have final targets. At least for some parts of the hardware. Concerning the memory for example, my sources reported me (and it was quite some time ago now) that Nintendo told them they are aiming for X quantity of RAM in the retail product, it was stated like that. They don't walk blindly at all, and my post in regard to dev kits tends to show that the system innards are stabilizing (grain of salt for this as explained).

For the "still in flux until rather late before launch", i guess it's a good thing, i already touch on that in thread 2 i think and there's ton of parameters that could explain it (mainly the novelty of an asymmetrical setting for a home system, attempts to use more than one padlet in certain circumstances, the need to refine what the Wii U is capable of with the progressive addition/or activation (an important word here) of features that will draw some resources so they have to make sure that it won't be a problem to run games, the feedback of first and third-parties to boost the overall capacities, the intent to release a console that will not be too far behind its future counterparts, etc.).

What, you thought that when i said "aren't on par", i actually stated Wii U capabilities were inferior ? If it's the case, just type ideaman in the thread 2 & 3 (search by poster) and you'll see that since my very first message, one of my goal was to confirm that the Wii U is clearly not on par with the xbox360 as some rumors reported, but superior. And not 1,1 or 1,2x superior. But not 5x either.

Could it be the case in which that extra power is used for the subscreen in a such extensive way that the overall system performance is comparable to 360? Or subscreen features couldn't require that amount of processing power?

Any measure of what is the % power that subscreen takes of the unit?

Are there any comparable streaming systems that would give some indication the processing power required to stream the data to the tablet?

One example I can think of was that PSP rear view mirror thing that GT5 had/was supposed to have?

Completely depends on what the screen is displaying.
If it's a copy of what's on the TV or something super simplistic, then it takes basically nothing.
If it's rendering a completely different scene, then it's going to be eating quite a bit of juice.

No I didn't know what to think really which is why I asked lol

I'm well aware that a newer architecture would be more capable, just not used to how you use the term "on par" =P

Thank you for the clarification! ^__^

I think I can live with that.

As has been mentioned the stream itself it not the issue, but rendering the data to display on the screen is. And even then programming is a key part of that. If someone wanted they could make something simple bog down the whole system. So there's no proper way to compare that to anything as it will depend on what each developer does and how efficient what they do is.

This is the biggest misconception about that Vigil thread. "on par" & "superior" are not mutually exclusive. The PS2 is on par with the Wii despite the Wii having superior hardware. The Vigil director saying the Wii U is on par with the current gen doesn't necessarily state that Wii=360.

Reading this message, it's like i'm a troll or something, i thought we were friends /sob

Sorry, I had like 15 seconds to write that before I had to rush off to my exam :-P

I like you (even though I think you should stop announcing your upcoming posts in advance and just post when you can), but I'm not ready to bet any money on anything a random poster on GAF has to say :-)

All in all, thanks for the posts, try to cut back on the teasing, yadda yadda

lol that would be funny.

Nintendo would think "Goddamnit, now THAT has to be our bare minimum with the next console. Microsoft trying to put us out of business!"

more like put development studios out of business. if u honestly think that developers will have the funds or maintain the funds to make games that take full advantage of powerful hardware AND have actual decent gameplay that doesn't suffer from time spent developing wet dream graphics, then your living in a dream world. because i don't care if the game looks as good as real life, if it doesn't sale *flush* u can kiss that dev studio goodbye after a while. just look what happened in this gen with run of the mill HD games.

one thing is for sure, i've said already that the Wii U's power isn't an important factor to me (for those of you who may have seen my post in the past) but one thing i can't wait for, out of all of this next gen, is for these so called holy grail/messiah/atomic bomb consoles that you guys have so much faith in to come out so i can laugh in your faces when the Wii U be able to run these supposed god-like ambrosia games that can only be graced on the fabled PS4 and Xbox 3/720 w/e.

This gen has pretty much ruined everything about gaming in concerns graphics. so much to the point that Nintendo skips 1 gen of powering up their console, and all the sudden, they don't know what they're doing according to some of you and of course the mighty media. that they're cheap, out of touch, lazy, behind in times. i mean please don't take this that i'm about to say as a troll but, what exactly have Sony and MS done so well this gen as far as tech? i mean sure, they've been able to bring HD gaming to light, but u guys are already begging for another graphical jump. but i digress, this will just go in one ear and out the other. again, mods please read what i'm saying b4 making a judgement on me, whether u agree with it or not.

It could be the case in which that extra power is used for the subscreen in a such extensive way that the overall system performance is comparable to 360? Or subscreen features couldn't require that amount of processing power?

Well, it could be roughly the case visually as explained in my last week post about the resolution of the games concerned by my info, but it's in a very specific context (third-party ports, v4 dev kits, not-tailored-for-the-wiiu engines, extensive use of the padlet with 3D scenes, impressions in a certain step in development, before the implementation of some graphical FX, etc etc etc etc, + even the Wii U approach of the studios, how and IF they want to profit of the additional power, how they develop on the system, if they focus their limited resources firstly on asymmetrical gamedesign ideas and after will polish the titles visually, or even won't do that by lack of time, will, money, or maybe they'll do it but in a fast and easy manner (better image quality on the Wii U version through AA/texture filtering, a jump from medium-high to high quality textures, a bit more FPS, but at the same resolution, that's what i expect from not-lazy 3rd parties ports)).

The Vigil director statement can be explained by reading/understand it under this perspective (+ other facts like some multiports who don't really benefit of more powerful capacities in their pc versions, etc.)

And in the end, being capable of running a current gen HD game at a solid 720p resolution + a different 3D scene on the padlet at 480p, on a dev kit/through a SDK that will receive additional upgrades after (v4 to V5) + tons of other optimizations until launch + additional graphical effects here and there, well, it's not a small feat, and it's clearly indicating that no, the Wii U isn't on par with the Xbox360. But it isn't on another planet either, to an extent that, like some have hoped, these ports would run at 1080p easily, it's not the case, in this context.

btw, i don't know why i'm repeating that whereas i was perfectly clear regarding this question before, and if tomorrow, another director will say that their version is just on par, 60% of this thread will jump again to hastily conclusions that the Wii U is just a Xbox360 in disguise :p

And now i must sleep, cya guys :)
