Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

This is pretty much the only thread on gaf I can stand to read and post in the majority of the time now. That's partly due to the fact that everyone here is just plain civil most of the time, partly because I haven't played any new games other than zelda in the last few months, and partly because console wars bullshit is relatively absent (with intermittent exceptions dependent on the hit and run posts and wild rumors).

Or maybe I've just gone batshit crazy.

No, no, didn't you know that we're all salty in here and will tar and feather anyone disagreeing about the speculations made here.

This thread at least allows for discussion going beyond the usual lol Nintendo never learns vs Nintendo can't do wrong fanboy bullshit.

If good discussion and harmless fun constitutes being salty and fanboyish, then fuck me sideways, then I am a salty fanboy, but I'd rather live in pretense land where you can discuss with others, than having to go through all the cynical bullshit.

It'll never happen but for me a big surprise at E3 would be a Super Meat Boy DD "Over 9000 Edition". Maybe with a exclusive chapter or something. Plus, there's a huge amount of cool stuff they could do with the Upad (leaderboard, top times now have replays and community stuff especially), and a "race a friend's ghost" MP portion could be awesome too. Imagine playing a level, a notification pops up on the Upad saying "so and so just beat your score" and shows a replay of it. And a level editor could be decent on the Upad too.

I'm pretty much the same way.

Trolling Nintendo fans - (or "Nthings," which I gather is allowed? Interesting.) - has become something of a sport around here, even seemingly encouraged to some small degree (see: Drinky)(because, gee golly, it's so easy and fun!). It's a bit discouraging, but what're ya gonna do? {Standard disclaimer: Not backseat modding - just my observations.}

We lost a handful of Nthings in the past few days because they couldn't stay cool when they interacted. Damn shame.
To quote the movie WarGames (starring the delightful Val Kilmer): the only way to win is to not play.

So I stay in here and try my best to avoid the system topics. Not always successful, but I've gotten better at limiting myself, I think? Staying in here works well, and the discussions on Nintendo and the industry are entertaning at least and top-notch enlightening/educational at best.

I've long been pretty damn "salty" about the industry in general already, but this outlook has only gotten firmer over the past generation. At this point, yes, there are certain things I am fervently hoping for in this industry, things that many people would not like. But "gamers," I am more and more convinced, deserve these things - and are, in effect, asking for them. I, for one, will howl like a goddamn loon when they get what they're asking for.

Hot damn.. that was a bit therapeutic. Thanks, guek!

What I really hope for are more level editors for the UPad. Hopefully Far Cry3 retains the level editor and expands upon it. The Touchscreen would be perfect for that. Maybe even Timesplitters 4 (please let this happen!!!)

One use that I would've loved to see used in games more often was the draw your own logo from Mario Kart DS. The big screen on the pad would make it that much easier.

Totally agreed. We need to see more user-created options in games. I guess a level editor sort of depends on the game if the Upad would be a great match for it (like 2D games and such), but it would be worlds better than any gamepad.

F-Zero GX also had a feature in the game where you could design your own decals and apply them to your custom racers. Really, really sweet feature. I'd love to see that kind of thing make an appearance on F-Zero and/or Mario Kart this time around.. even though I don't have an artistic bone in my body, I love seeing what people create.

I completely misread that as "as the Stock Bell Rings." I need to learn photoshop.. I'd put him laughing with Miyamoto, holding the uPad, ringing the opening bell for the Dow Jones.. hehe..

I'm NOT interested in user created content. I don't know why, but it just seems to be something I outgrew once I reached my 30's.

It would also work better for 3D level editors thanks to the increased precision and faster tool selection.
Crop, drag, dig, stretch etc, all at the tips of your fingers/stylus, using the facebuttons as additional hotkeys or shortcuts, it would streamline the level creation process immensely.

I loved making MP levels in Far Cry 2 and Time Splitters 3. Even with the simple tools in the latter, I was able to make some kick ass cooperative survival missions, hold the fort missions and even better, CTF variants.

Far Cry2 I created some awesome Maps, like a flooded city with great spacing for sniper vantage points, lots of close quarter alleys and a central place to tie it all together.

The possibilities are endless and I really hope that we'll see an increased focus on these features. Forge, LBP, Modnation Racers have shown that you can sustain a community while not nickle diming them for every piece of content, while additionally still provide and sell DLC.

If Nintendos online approach would center around user creation and initiative, it could lead to a very healthy and friendly atmosphere were damaging elements would be singled out much faster than with the anonymity and hostility of PSN and XBL.

And it would get a lot of people to even connect their console to the net. The 3DS is allready on a good way there, but it's still not there yet.
With a home console that has a camera, touchscreen for drawing, a microphone all built into the main controller it would be a pristine chance to found the online community upon these methods of interaction.

After Swapnote I'm pretty much excited about what Nintendo has in store for the WiiU online community. Just ditch the cumbersome friendcode system, or tie it to underage accounts administrated by parents, and it should work like a charm.

So this rumor from GI.biz is BS ..right??...

Let's put it this way.

There are way more developers on THE RECORD saying the WiiU is a powerful machine compared to a few questionable anonymous devs saying it's actually weaker than current gen machines.

Who would you believe?

Yeah, I completely get you, Tom. I'm actively avoiding those trollbait topics (Why is Nintendo always a gen behind? etc) because I'll be sure to get riled up at the trolls. Reasoning with them is futile especially when more than half of them are hit-and-run posters. eh, what can you do?

If budgets continue to rise to the whims of EA/Crytek/Activision etc, smaller publishers will bow out and this industry's going to crash sooner or later. Nintendo'll still be doing things to the beat of their own drum. They haven't relied on 3rd parties as a crutch like Sony and Microsoft, and can and will continue to exist without 3rd parties if needed to.

I probably won't be posting again since uni's starting to get really hectic. Not to mention Ninty probably won't be releasing any info until E3, where they'll have a huge blowout and hopefully blow our minds. Have fun speculating!

So this rumor from GI.biz is BS ..right??...

Of course.

But being honest, if Average Joe consumer walks by a 360 putting-out its best visuals and then by a 720 with its best, I'm hard-pressed to imagine seeing Joe's eyes popping-out in stunned amazement. He might go, "hmm.. that's pretty nice. Cool."

But that's about it. We gaming nerds may say things like, "look at the lighting between the nineteen second mark and twenty-five seconds. Very lovely!" or "check-out the water reflection effect around the fifty-second mark," but I take it as a sign of how far we've come visually. It's hard for me to take seriously e-peen-obsessed characters who say things like, "this is 360-level graphics. Ugh! Hideous!" I've long-maintained that at this point, art style will matter more than technology.

So even if we "only" see 2x 360 {*insert duct tape joke here*}, I'm done sweating it at this point. It'll be fine.

(damn.. I'm chatty this morning. Lots of sleepy-time does that to me, I guess..)

I'm diluting my time here somewhat with my Wii's bucket list, but still.. 12-hour shifts where I can surf the net all day? I end-up with a tab open on this thread, be it from work or home. Cheers!

I like believing the dissenting voices, there are far fewer ulterior motives for being a negative nancy.

Really?
There are plenty of reasons for being negative, particularly in this industry.
Developers, especially middle tear developers that have entitlement issues, love to be little pissants.

Absolutely, level editors for 3D games would be great, I was just sort of implying they would need to adhere to the ebb and flow of the tools/design like LBP/Forge/Smash do. At the end of the day I'm game for any editor and user-created stuff that is good and fun to use (unlike SMB's which was a bad example). Like Forge, it really plays well with the whole UI and theme they've created around the experience, so I'd love to see something like that be built around the Upad.

And competitive community stuff could be cool on the Upad too. I think a lot of people underestimate the significance of a subscreen that could show up-to-date stat tracking, invites and streams of matches, leaderboards, etc. Combine that with a full-on line to all the other features/service of the console like INET/apps/vid chat/maybe picture-in-picture stuff too. At the end of the day I think a big part of what may make the Upad cool (if delivered) is a convergence of features and services integrated seamlessly into a full social console experience, with game innovation on top of that. That should be "Project Cafe".

Agreed. But I'm sure everyone on GAF knows that the people here are a 'hardcore' (aka overly critic, whiny bunch!) minority.

Oh, I get ya loud and clear. But something tells me that if Nintendo fans for some strange reason aren't happy at this E3 (and we will be), then there will be plenty of things to bring us yummy, crow-flavored schadenfreude-y goodness over the next generation.

Time will tell.

Given Nintendo fixation with the resistive touch screen, general user customization for the software is something i would like to see being pushed hard by Nintendo and third parties. Level editors, car or character customization. Using the camera to grab textures and the stylus for precision drawing, then give the player options to exchange their creations for in game currency. It's amazing what some creative users can accomplish in Forza, imagine putting this controller on their hands.

So I don't know if Nintendo's response to the power rumors are old, but here it is anyways.

"A representative of Nintendo of America neither confirmed nor denied the report for Digital Trends. “We do not focus on technology specs. We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.”

http://news.yahoo.com/developers-claim-wii-u-weaker-ps3-360-nintendo-210201325.html

Pretty much Nintendo's company line. Anyone who continues to criticize that after around a decade is just willfully ignorant.

And you know that Zelda collection is gonna happen, just like the Metroid and Mario collections.

So I don't know if Nintendo's response to the power rumors are old, but here it is anyways.

What do people expect them to say? The moment they come out and say that the system is more powerful than the 360/PS3, then they'll be under fire. If they say they're weaker than those machines, then they'll be under fire. This is true for any company. If they wade into the argument they'll simple get drug through the mud and it's not really worth getting into the fight. Let the games speak for themselves as well as the hardware.

With the MMO comment, Pokemon MMO anyone?

An MMO would be amazing, but I'd be happy enough with just a full fledged console RPG.

I don't know if they think it'll eat into the sales of the DS games but I'm still shocked we haven't gotten one yet.

It'd been better if they gave a straight answer, unlikely, I know, but it wouldn't have caused more arguments.

Like, what the fuck does it mean? They're simply not commenting, or they know the rumours are right and covering up? People will take this negatively.

I agree they should have given a straight answer, but people will take it however way they want to look at it: good or bad.

So i had a pretty easy day at work, so i could think about some stuff...

With the whole "WiiU is even weaker than ps360, yada yada yada" stuff totally reminded me of the Gamecube.

Wasnt the Gamecube relatively weak "on paper" compared to its competitors, wich were total beasts according to their spec sheets? We all know now that the cube had alot of grunt behind it!

Right now, Sony and Microsoft seem to let the 3rd Partys know what they are cooking, handing out first dev kits ands spec sheets. A dev/manager of a company compares the Spec sheets from Durango/Orbis with WiiU and comes to the conclusion "hey, the WiiU is pretty weak" and then says negative things on interviews that have been said.

This happenes because of Sonys and Microsofts "Dick waving contest", giving theoretical numbers, wich will never be archived in real life. Nintendo on the other hand, gives real numbers, wich are alot closer to reality! (Wich they did with the Gamecube...)

And lets not forget... Nintendo are Wizards when it comes to optimising a consoles hardware!

I'm starting to belive that the spec sheet makes the WiiU look weaker than it actually is. Just like the Gamecube!

So right now, the same thing that happened with the Gamecube may be happening to the WiiU now!

So in conclution: The same is happening then last gen and with WiiU we may have another Gamecube on our hands! (Read the entire post to understand this sentence correctly please!)

This is all speculation on my part, hence "speculation thread" ;)

I've always wondered how the combat in a Pokemon MMO would work. Turn based works fine for the handhelds, but an MMO should be different, no?

The answer that many on GAF wanted: "our measurements indicate that the Wii U has a maximum graphical output of 146.4 peniswatts."

The responses on GAF:
"naw.. it's Nintendo. What does that Fisher-Price toy do, like 40 peniswatts?"

"Sounds about right."

"The Ninthings will be upset at this. The DurrObris is gonna output at 450 peniswatts."

"Hmm. Not buying it. Maximum peniswattage for the PS3 is 103.7. Now compare that New Super Mario Bros Mii footage to the Dudebros of War-n-Stuff Demo."

"Sweet! Zelda's gonna look awesome at even a mere 120 peniswatts! So good!"

"good god, they're still around? When are they gonna go third-party already?"

“The machine itself will be one of the best looking versions of the game [sic]… because they’ve got more RAM than some of the other things [platforms]“, says Martel. “They’re late in the cycle so they’ve got this really great processor.”

Thank goodness Gearbox is speaking up to keep things under control. They are doing better damage control for Wii U than Nintendo.
