Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I'm just dreaming, but I'd love a next-gen Tokyo Wars on Wii U.

For those that don't know, Tokyo Wars was a NAMCO arcade tank game that was supper-addictive.

i have to say that the chosen quote in the title was a setup XD

anyhow i told you guys that was the way it was going to end up!

Did anyone think otherwise? Threads like that just cause me to shake my head. No idea how anyone could make the conclusion that the Wii U could or couldn't run UE4 from what Mark said. Craziness.

Those tank images remind me of BattleTanx and the Army Men games which I used to play on the N64.

I think BattleTanx (have any of you played these games?) would be great on the Wii U. Not the campaign though, just the multiplayer; the tablet could act as a radar or it could be used to aim the tank guns.

^Oh and that Super Mario Bros. gif is great.

I don't think it makes sense of Mark Rein or Mike Capps to be so openly supportive of Wii U if it wasn't going to be UE4 compatible. This is just conjecture of course, but it doesn't really make sense if it wasn't going to be a viable platform for them in the future. They ignored the Wii because they felt they couldn't do anything worthwhile on that system. It just seems like there's been a complete turnaround, and while UE3 support is likely partly to blame for that, I can't see that causing as much excitement for the brass at Epic Games if the Wii U couldn't run UE4.

Again, as always, we'll know by E3. Oy.

That's gonna be quite a moment of truth. I can see the forum becoming inaccessible already. The OT being closed. Lots of error messages. Taunting. Funny gifs. More error messages. Loss of avatars. Meltdowns.

It's gonna be hellish. And glorious.

but nothing makes sense when it comes to anything nintendo related

Epic does have a habit of saying things are cool, but then not doing anything for the system. I don't think they're doing anything for the Vita, either, but they did have nice things to say about it. Though, I think the fact that he basically says we'll be surprised when E3 comes might mean he's seen stuff (which we know he has) and likes what he has seen.

http://www.gamesradar.com/nintendo-doomed-not-likely-just-take-look-how-much-money-its-got-bank/

Here's the exact quote taken from a feature in the latest issue of the UK's Nintendo Gamer magazine: "Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank - enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there's almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out - we're in the year 2075 by this point - they've got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business."

Nintendo is here to stay, damn it!

So what is a reasonable expectation to have as far as first-party game reveals at E3?

Right now, I'm expecting at least a Mario and Smash Bros. trailer. It just makes sense to show off Mario in HD first (if we're not counting the Zelda tech demo) followed by a glimpse of all the major players at once via Smash.

Right?
Mario maybe, but I highly doubt we'll see anything Smash Bros. related. Didn't Sakurai's team only JUST start production for it? Like, not even a few months ago? Not likely, maybe a logo or something but that's it. We'll definitely see something Mario related though, if only NSMBMii. I'm hoping that game gets a huge overhaul though, with some new ideas like the level creator mentioned earlier. If it's simply the same game with Miis then I'm out, but if they boost the production values a ton to sport legitimately beautiful graphics and a soundtrack not ripped from the DS game I'll be pretty happy.

I'm hoping for a new "real" Mario reveal though, but I'm not betting on it. I dunno, maybe it's the cynic in me that assumes Nintendo will focus a lot on more 'casual' type games and ports of 360/PS3 games instead of their own franchises, but if they announce so much as ONE game from a beloved franchise I'll be satisfied.

Oh he most certainly has. We know that there were secret Wii U games shown at GDC. We know that for a fact, so it's safe to assume he at least has a better picture of what's coming than we do. That's what makes his statements all the more encouraging.

I wonder if analysts are invited behind closed doors to check out upcoming hardware...

Nintendo does have a pretty incredible war chest. They are well positioned to invest in next generation development, buy studios, hiring tons of people etc.

I was beginning to suspect they'd done a ND and had a secret studio (or two) working on stuff, but I've come to realise that's just fan boy wishful thinking.

(Of course, Monolith and maybe Retro now have two teams and the new headquarters building will probably house more staff, once it's done).

I've done my share of threads for tonight. Somebody else do it.

Oh there's really no point. There are people on this board that believe that the 3DS is a failure because it's currently making a loss. Irony is evidently completely lost on such people.

I do believe though that like 2005/2006, this year is a huge turning point for nintendo. If there was ever a time for nintendo to heavily invest in the future of their company, now would be it. I think the incredibly drastic 3DS price cut is evidence that nintendo realizes this too. 3DS had to make a comeback for nintendo to feel secure in their future. I just hope they feel the same about their console brand. I like nintendo's products and that definitely colors my impression of the company, but I also really admire their way of doing business. It just seams very sensible. Even with the 3DS losing money, the hardware was designed to be able to turn a profit relatively quickly if a price cut became necessary (which it was). What I hope is that they adopt a similar strategy with the Wii U (sans immediate price cut) and follow their gamecube pricing strategy by making a slight loss on hardware that is pulled into profitability within a year or so.

Really, people who believe that nintendo refuses to take losses on their hardware or that they're obsessed with being cheap know nothing of the company's history.

New headquarters to streamline development, more out-sourcing to trusted partners, Nintendo Network, NFC technology, new teams, new IPs, Nintendo Direct.

I'd say they're gearing up.

Retro Company Size
51-200 employees

Maybe up to 200 employes. Makes sense the correct number if they want to keep things secret and suprise.

Well then, what the hell WILL they show?!

With the botched reveal last year, they have to come out guns blazing...right?

RIGHT?!?!?!

Well, linkedin seems to provide a broad range for each company (Nintendo of America is listed as 1001-5000, EA is listed as 5,001-10,000). I wouldn't read too much into it.

All of the yes.

If I was Iwata I would be pressuring Sakurai to have a CG trailer for Smash ready, including 1-2 new characters, at the very least. They've got 3 months.

Other than that:
Pikmin
Mario
Wii U Sports/Play
F-Zero/Wave Race/Star Fox/Surprise Reboot
Retro's game
Monolith's game
New IP(s)
Game from SPD
Wii U Fit

All could be possibilities.
Only things I wouldn't expect are AC, MK, FE, or Paper Mario.

maybe the ninjas want us to think that ssb wii u has only just begun...

now if they leave out subspace so the game wont require a wasted year then all is well.

...ahh the possibilities.....
when the new 3d zelda is made, they really need to bring the magic bar back...and the elemental arrows

If there's a game that look at parity with the bird demo at launch with a locked stable framerate, people's jaws are going to drop.

Not going to lie, I'm not even expecting anything like that at launch for any system. Maybe a second generation in house ps3 title, but that's it. Maybe its been too long since I've seen it...

Edit: After a quick glance...maybe I can see the visual fidelity going there. I guess what I needed to say was the scope, animation, "fullness" of it all seems too good to be true. The continuity, if you will.

Man these threads move fast. I almost think we need a new thread started where people just post rumors and speculate on them. ;)

I wake up to 4 or 10 new pages and worry that maybe somewhere in there is actual news, so I've been reading it all. I appreciate the enthusiasm here and am myself pretty excited for the Wii U, but mayn.

Maybe if you post some actual news put a subject line on it, easier for us catching up on the thread to find?

(now to climb back on that train)
