Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I just though DK would be a logical revival since DKCR sold so well. Not to mention that bananas tease I think Eurogamer (don't quite remember who?)had.

They are planning a 3DS game if those pictures are any indication (think it was wallmart preorders or something)

Retro has enough developers to release a Wii U title and at least help with a 3DS sequel to a game they made a couple years ago.

Whatever we see from Retro will be amazing, but it won't be the only amazing title we have coming, Monolith is working on something amazing too I'm sure, and there is still probably 20+ launch titles for Wii U, 4 of which come from Nintendo this year.

Wii had 17 so this seems about right to me.

Of course, you just agreed that that franchise would be tested in some way first, which is the only time Nintendo has revived a franchise. They revive franchises from more than just Retro too, Treasure did the Sin and Punishment game I believe, and Monolith soft would be better suited for Star Tropics IMO, Though Retro is probably capable of doing it, it's not something an uncharted guy would be so excited about.

eh, Monolith Soft doing Star Tropics?

hmm...so strange *tilts head*

I'd rather they work on Xeno-series or new JRPG IP.

and could Treasure concievably work on Star Fox since they did well from what I heard of Sin and Punishment? I don't know much about S&P other than it is a rail shooter.

I just want more awesome collaborations, like the Sega F-Zero and Namco Star Fox one. So many potentially interesting ideas could substantiate the numerous dead IPs Nintendo has.

Miyamoto: "No."

Hey! Be thankful it wouldn't be clogged with THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY.

I actually love Other M. ._.

Wii carries such a strong connotation, I'm not sure one awesome presentation will eradicate the stigma attached to it.

Playstation brand was killed by a number... (whether that number is 3 or 599.99 is debatable.)

Monolith Soft is big enough to do multiple games I believe, also everyone talks about star tropics on Wii U, but a 3DS game could come first, I still think we will see something from the Star Tropics franchise bleed into another game (like smash) before we see a sequel to it.

More collaborations are coming, I think Nintendo will whore out their IPs pretty strongly this gen, I just hope we have less Namco x star fox and more Camcom x Zelda (minish cap) & Sega x F-Zero

Wallmart isn't exactly the best source...

But yeah, Retro is big enough to create both a Wii U and 3DS game, especially the DK game will probably reuse assets.

Yep, everything will be amazing and glorious; we will cry happy tears over this. I love a new generation.

I see a lot of things about next gen that completely terrify me, but not Nintendo.

Let me put it this way: Sony has never been last to launch since entering the market and Microsoft have investors hungry for something that resembles PROFIT from the Xbox venture after 10 years of not seeing any. Depending on how MS and Sony play off each other, if Nintendo can keep out of it and just steer their course, one of the other 2 will destroy their rival, at the expense of the opportunity to lead the market. I feel like we're going back to a 2-pony race within the next 5 years.

The name will stay because Nintendo will gamble that their presentation at E3 will destroy any stigma the brand has among the hardcore gamer and can still leverage the brand to casual gamers.

Launch title predictions are tricky, given that I have almost nothing to work with to deliver any (thank you very much, Nintendo ninjas! *shakes fist*)

But to be vague, I see Nintendo courting franchises, developers and publishers that never wanted to do business with them on prior systems (we have already seen a tiny sliver of that via Tekken on WiiU), especially ones that don't currently have a presence on PS360. Just so they can show up at E3 and say "how you like me now??!?" to Sony and MS, knowing that Nintendo will essentially have THEIR market for the next whole year at bare minimum.

EDIT: I would like to add, though, that considering there's so little to go on information-wise and VERY little to draw from historically, I'm not going to call these predictions a definitive like I have with others.

the problem with sony is that unlike nintendo during the gamecube era they cannot rely on their handheld to keep the ship afloat... and microsoft is not surely going anywhere... i'm afraid that if one of the big 3 is going to sink that's going to be sony...

and if history will repeat itself it won't be a long run with just 2 players, a third one will show up, the question is: who's going to be?
i'd hope Valve, because i don't think i could stand an horde of apple fanboys tainting the forum
and i say that as the happy owner of 1 macbook, 1 macbook pro, 1 ipod touch, 1 ipod shouffle, 1 ipad 2 and a time capsule

I really doubt they would create box art for the thing, lol walmart is too lazy.

E3 is going to blow our minds, I bought a ticket on the hype train from ACE, he only needed $599.99... BARGAIN.

Nintendo hatred is at all time high though. Playstation has fallen from grace but it's not like people actively avoid it. Compare that to 'hardcore' gamers and the Wii.

Curious on the Monolith Soft 3DS project. Could it be related to Soma Bringer? Xeno-series game? I'll take any JRPG from Monolith Soft tbh.

Collaborations will be glorious. and speaking of Capcom and their great work on Zelda games (I loved Minish Cap even if it was short), could we see Miyamoto x Capcom on that Legend of Zelda LTTP '3D' remake that was hinted at some time ago?

Off topic, but is your avatar from that tentacle game on Mac from the 90's? I PLAYED THE SHIT OUTTA THAT.

Also, I think Sony's close to sinking, I feel as if their PS4 may try to be something big and fall on it's face, a la Atari Jaguar.

OH MAN, THAT LTTP 3D REMAKE. I WANT SO BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD

If everything goes as you planned, then yes, I can see Nintendomination next gen with Sony possibly bowing out. But I don't want to see Sony gone. Competition breeds innovation, yadda yadda, you've all heard enough of this but it's pretty true. I'd rather see Microsoft leave but they aren't stopping until they've got the living room under their stranglehold.

Wii carries such a strong connotation, I'm not sure one awesome presentation will eradicate the stigma attached to it.

and I want some awesome collaborations happening. That 3DS BamcoxCapcomxSega feels like just one tiny step to that direction.

Microsoft is just as likely to leave as Sony. 15 years with little to no positive gains would likely mean that they'd bow out. Especially when you consider that they view the Xbox as their lynch-pin to getting into the living room and have made it clear that entry to the living room is all they give a shit about.
But there's lots of different approaches to dominating the living room, and if another mover like Apple pushes for it and gets it via a different market sector entirely, MS will dump consoles like a vat of hot garbage, knowing they spent 15 years and a lot of dollars on a trajectory that doesn't work. They have no vested interest in gaming like Nintendo or even Sony do. So either MS or Sony is a likely candidate. But I admit Sony is simply more likely given the fragile state they are in.

Besides, whoever leaves the race will eventually be replaced by another intrepid company the same way Microsoft replaced Sega. It will just take longer this next time, that's all.

As for the collaborations, I see it more as 1st-party finally going back to being more buddy-buddy with 3rd-parties. Nintendo more than any other company seems interested in collecting metrics on purchasing and playing habits and the opinions of gamers of ALL the games that they purchase, not just 1st-party. That tells me that Nintendo wants 3rd-parties to succeed just as much as they want it for themselves, and that tells me that there will be a fostering of goodwill and co-operation that we haven't seen since the 16-bit and 32-bit eras.
Example: "hey Capcom, here's our data... based on this, we think you should take this franchise out of cold storage, since our user base appears that they might be receptive to it." It's my understanding that 1st-parties don't have that dialogue with 3rd-parties anymore, and it shows.

my avatar is from Tim Schafer's The Day of the Tentacle, developed by LucasArts :P
it was released both for mac and pc, and was a truly amazing game.
I'm so hyped for the double fine kickstarter project *_*

anyhow i think sony will be much more conservative this turn around... Kaz is CEO to turn the company and make profits, i don't really think that the PS4 will be a powerhouse.
Maybe that was their intention, but after seeing for the third time in a row that sheer power won't take you anywhere (PSP, PS3, PSVita) i think they'll play it safe to make sure to turn out a profit.

Do you know what you've just done to me? I'm not going to be able to sleep and I'm going to find "hints" to a 3D LTTP in everything capcom and Miyamoto say, even if they are talking about RE or Pikmin.

Yeah Monolith Soft could bring me anything on the 3DS and I'll devour it. I wouldn't mind a Baten Kaios game either.

As for the Nintendo hatred, I think it was higher before, people generally like the DS brand for instance, and the industry as a whole will port over to the most successful console if it's feasible, Wii U should end up being that console, I do think we are going into a Nintendo dominated generation. Just releasing first with a console after so long has everyone excited, it just needs some wow, and if GTA5 is announced before the launch of the console, (and there is 0 reason why Rockstar wouldn't bring GTA5 to Wii U) perception of Nintendo will change. I think this is what Mark Rein for instance was talking about.

Sega, with a glorious, triumphant return. This time with crappy EA support and more competent management! An actually good Sonic game, Skies of Arcadia remake+sequels, Panzer Dragoon remake+sequels, Shenmue remake+Part 3, Jet Set Radio sequels, PSO2, Yakuza 5+sequels, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 3rd, and all of Platinum Games future lineup. ALL EXCLUSIVE!

I can dream.

I still don't see Microsoft leaving the living room open after dumping so much money into Xbox. Maybe Xbox being a set top box + XBLA + Windows 8 rumour is true? It would sorta be bowing out without leaving the living room.

The only other intrepid companies i see on the horizon are Apple and Google. Not sure if want.

I just think it'd be easier with a rebrand. Nintendo Infinite or Nintendo U or something. Nintendo hurt themselves with hardcores a lot during the GCN era too (the lineup was as dead as Wii's is now) and the Wii name totally invigorated that.

I disagree with Terrell that their e3 presentation can turn the tide. At the end of the day, a name is a name and it won't matter, but WiiU just doesn't do it. It's too much of an extension to the Wii, and they are clearly trying to cater to a missed market (third parties, westernized games, etc).

Goddamn e3 is going to be exciting.

There is not way Microsoft is ducking out next round. Xbox Live is very established and with millions of subscribers paying yearly they have a good thing going.

muahahaha. I really want the 3D LTTP rumour to be true. I can just imagine Link waking up and going out through the rainstorm...I'm going to stop before I kill myself.

If everything goes perfect for Wii U (eg. 3rd parties will port all multiplat games, etc), I can see Nintendomination happening. But the reality isn't that simple, and I doubt and don't want Sony to bow out to another "perfect storm".

a sega comeback would be glorious but i'm afraid we have has many chances to see an atari comeback <.<

i totally agree.
Will next xboxes less focused on games? probably, but now they are in and they won't give up the sw money, plus most of the casual features are behind gold membership for a reason (ie netflix) to make sure that even people who won't game will pay it.

the reason because they won't leave gaming it's also because gamers are the most likely to jump aboard a new hw early in the generation, and the gamer wife/mom will likely purchase additional content (movies etc) on their xbox live.

Microsoft is here to stay.

I personally feel it'll be based off this art...

I don't think Sony has to bow out, they just need to release a console that doesn't cost them money, they need to make a box on a budget, Multiplatform games will come to them too, and they have some strong IPs, if they do go with another PS3 monster of a console, then it is possible that they die off, but that is what evolution is all about, survival of the fittest, and you aren't fit if you keep making the same mistakes.

Wii U really doesn't need everything to go perfectly, for Nintendo's domination, it's actually possible as long as Nintendo sells more than the other consoles, for the first year or two, this is a given... at which point, if they are 20m consoles ahead, they will get everything by default, and as it's already been said, there is nothing Xbox3 and PS4 could possibly do, that Wii U wouldn't be able to do at a lower fidelity. (this might not even really be noticeable, such as 720p vs 1080p or about half the power of the other boxes)

I remember dreaming of Nintendo absorbing Sega. Somehow, I still feel we all would have been better off if that was the case.

Well, I suppose that is what I mean, they won't "leave" the living room, but they'd go at it from a different market sector, relating it only tangentially to video game consoles as they typically exist.

Valvebox might be something to look to in the future.

Also, Sony was just an electronics company that owned some movie studios when they launched the PlayStation... who's to say another electronics company wouldn't want to give it a try?

It's a bit of a long-shot, but I'm going to guess Samsung, looking for a market that their traditional competitors can't or won't touch.

You can disagree with me all you like. The reason the name still holds negative sway is because no one has seen anything that betrays that emotional sway they attach to the name. Look at the Xbox 360 as an example of this, there was a LOT of negative stigma attached to the Xbox brand, even in North America. Most of that totally washed away when it started pushing out games that people wanted. Could have done more had MS not totally squandered a part of their headstart.

Give people what they want and the past washes away.

Besides, any of the shit attached to the "Wii" branding isn't actually attached to the Wii brand, it's attached to NINTENDO ITSELF, and no name change to the console will fix that. And Nintendo knows it. They have to OWN their year headstart.

Anyways, bed time.

Samsung releasing something would definitely push that whole Apple vs Samsung battle a bit higher, but realistically unless Sony releases a prohibitively expensive console, they will stick in the game until a 4th console pushes them out the door, if they can just make a box that doesn't sell for a loss (did PS1 and PS2 sell for a loss? I think it's really a new trend) Sony is going to have a decent showing in world wide sales, Xbox3 might not do as well as Xbox 360, thanks to Nintendo likely being more widely adopted (by hard core gamers) and people not needing the second box as much.

I really think the Steam Box might hurt Sony, and possibly Microsoft (though they might get royalties thanks to windows) both would lose business to that box, and PC gaming might actually become a much larger target for developers.

Yes. PS1 launched in North America at HALF its Japanese price tag, taking losses out of the gate and recovering them halfway into the generation. PS2 started at a heavier loss and maintained it through price drops until closer to the end of the generation, but the game sales recovered whatever they lost. PS3 is when their business model went totally downhill, because they gambled with their user base. But the loss leader tactic is not new for Sony's PlayStation business, no.

Valve box would be glorious.

Plus entering the hw business it's extremely expensive and while valve or other gaming related company pretty much already have a gaming userbase another electronic company like samsung would have to build it from scratch...
everybody saw how much money microsoft had to bleed to enter the market, and i think that will hold back companies like samsung.

well said bro!

Yeah, Samsung's the only really big electronics company that is able to push out a box of some sort. I mean what other companies are there? Philips? lolno. Panasonic? losing money last time i heard. Sharp? Same thing as Panasonic. Toshiba? Doubt it. LG? Maybe. HP? Not likely. Samsung's been gaining profit with their smartphones and their brand is strong and positive.

I see Apple using the Apple TV to enter the living room and along with the iPhones and iPads, force everyone to use their services for everything. They have it the easiest.

On the contrary, I think Sony's going to push another strong console, only out of obligation. They have nothing to differentiate themselves like Nintendo (through the uPad) and Microsoft (through Kinect). Move was a failure and it failed to gain traction among the masses. Their only way is to appeal through power and their online services.

Steam Box I still don't see happening. I'm envisioning a kind of Steam-certified sticker + deals with hardware manufacturers to auto install Steam on it. There'll also be a scale of how gaming-wise the computer is, kinda how Windows Experience Index is used but instead for games. If an actual Steam Box comes to light, I'll be surprised.

I think it would hurt Microsoft the most although they do get royalties, as you said. Sony would likewise be hurt. It's just Microsoft seems terribly vulnerable with its almost non-existent first party lineup. Gears of War main trilogy is over and Halo is the one true killer app + Kinect 2.0 for casuals. I'm curious how Microsoft will deal with deficiency or decline over time like Sony due to over-reliance on third parties.

Oh! Since we are on the topic of Nintendo cakes:
I made a Mario themed cake when I was in high school (culinary arts class).
Here are some pics

I should hone my skills so that Nintendo can hire me as their personal cake-maker. Then I'll be able to get inside information about the Wii U :D

A bit late too say wow ! Impressive, man !

good idea about slang I have submitted it for you on Urban Dictionary you are now famous :3

lol, thanks :)

In the last Famitsu (btw, the 40/40 of Kid Icarus is impressive, even if these scores don't have the same "value" and worth than before), there are informations about the next Dynasty Warriors for 3DS containing some Nintendo IP costumes !

We can expect this kind of collaborations for future Tecmo Koei titles on Wii U :)

I'll agree to an extent, in the end the name does not matter and big games will be big games and a good lineup will still equal sales.

However,

There wasn't that much of an Xbox stigma, so I don't think that is a fair comparison. Atleast Xbox had the third party games, the horsepower, the PC-meets-console market, Xbox Live, and Halo.

The Wii never had the hardcore. They never had the big third party games. They never had a proper online infrastructure. They had the casual market for a little while and then lost them. Wii sales declined really hard.

Two other reasons a name change would benefit:

1. The confused casual syndrome. They were confused at last e3 and they were confused with the 3DS. Nintendo needs to differentiate their consoles. Any casual gamer or parent heard the name Wii and said 'what is that?' It was a new, exciting, odd, and enticing name. WiiU, as a name brand, will not turn heads of evoke the same consumer emotion. Especially if they are targeting a new, broader, market.

2. When has Nintendo ever released a mainline console with a 'me too' name? From N64 to Gamecube to Wii to....WiiU? This isn't DS to DSi or even quite the same as DS to 3DS. WiiU is not a name to say 'we are bigger, better, and more badass' it is saying 'we are continuing with our wii brand' the one the president admitted failed in many departments.

But let's agree to disagree.

Bed Time.

In the last Famitsu (btw, the 40/40 of Kid Icarus is impressive, even if these scores aren't what they were before), there are informations about the next Dynasty Warriors for 3DS containing some Nintendo IP costumes !

We can expect this kind of collaboration for future Tecmo Koei titles on Wii U :)

I want full on collaborations, not this DLC costume crap :(

I'm curious how Microsoft will deal with deficiency or decline over time like Sony due to over-reliance on third parties.

apple surely has the easy way in, but i don't think they could meet hardcore gamers expectation...
a lot of people on gaf love ipad gaming for what it is, but i don't really think that any of them would exchange the app store library for the one of microsoft/sony... and whiile being powerful i don't really think that the current apple tv cpu/gpu can push a game like ME/Halo/Uncharted

they would surely become the leading console for casuals, but that's it.

Steam box is a pipe dream right now, but valve could "release" 3 different price range boxes and simply put a sticker on the game page on steam saying how it runs on each of the 3 possible hw configuration.
All they'd need to do is make a different version of steam running at startup and let that be the "OS" for the console.

As i said before i don't really think sony will be releasing a powerhouse. Sure, move bombed and bombed hard, but i think they will differentiate themselves through their small first party and pushing 3D gaming on tv, plus integration with their other devices (vita, psp, etc).
Is that going to be enough? i don't know, but i think that the reason because sony doesn't want to talk about their next gen is either because they still don't have idea what to focus on or because they don't wanna show their hand before it's time.

to avoid the confused casual syndrome they could keep the name but design their console to make it look extremely different from the Wii... the problem they had with the 3DS was that both the name and the console aesthetic where too similar... that is a limitation you have with the handheld because you need a certain form factor, but they can go wild on the Wii U design

I don't think the 3DS really has a problem there, people buy games, and to buy a certain one, they will at the very least realize it doesn't work with their DSlite/DSi and buy a 3DS or return the game, not knowing there is a different console plays little part of that.

However, if someone picks up a 3DS game, and doesn't read 3DS on the rim of the box, I have to assume they wouldn't know how to turn on the console in the first place.

People didn't buy 3DS because there was no game worth $300 at launch.

Part of the Codemasters Formula 1 press release:
The FORMULA ONE portfolio will be expanded with F1 ONLINE THE GAME™, a free-to-play online management and racing game, which will go live this spring. An additional and all-new FORMULA ONE experience for a family audience is due this holiday season with details to be announced.

I'd suggest that the "FORMULA ONE experience for a family audience" this holiday season will (also) be a Wii U title, as Codemasters has already confirmed to support the platform.

makes sense. I'd go to that conclusion as well.

totally anecdotal but i had to still explain last week to some friends that the DS and 3DS have different CPUs and GPUs and that besides the 3D effect none of those games could ever run on the DSi...

i do agree but i'm afraid that we are starting to read too much into things guys XD

I would say the F1 thing makes more sense than FF ;)
Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens confirmed in the past that the studio wants to bring F1 in addition to DiRT to the Wii U and it is pretty obvious that they want to bring it to every platform (3DS, Wii). Having a more family-orientated SKU just directly leads to the assumption that this will be for Wii U. In addition to any other platform.

Yeah, it's just uncanny we have such a coincidence. Nintendo Ninjas loosening up? :P

Btw, when and why was the thread's title changed?

Family Friendly F1?
The fuck does that even mean?

The usual 3rd party PR bullshit. 'Nintendo consoles appeal to the family and kids, not hardcore gamers so hurr durr'

isn't there a Crytek event in April, where they are suppose to reveal some games they are working on? even if they just talk about what they are doing for Wii U, would make me happy, but I am 90% sure we are going to get at least a few things a week from now on. Just look at what happen this week so far.

hope it won't play anywhere close to that kinect driving game <.<
but i don't have any clue about what that could mean...
