Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Not likely because nobody actually bought a iPad for Angry Birds (or any piece of the App Store). You don't drop $500 to play $1 games. You buy one for prestige, tech-fetishism, and the Apple ecosystem. To this end I don't think Wii U will have the slightest impact on iPad.

You buy an iPad for more than gaming, and lo and behold, the Wii U tablet does more than just games as well... You can browse the internet, watch youtube, netflix and hulu, listen to music (at least through pandora) draw, message friends, use facebook/tweeter and read. The majority of tablet customers also leave their tablets at home.

Wii U will eat some of the market, because there is cross over that it does fairly well. None of those things above are exaggerations or need confirmation beyond a browser. (except for netflix which is already supported, hulu is flash based.

Most interesting thing for me in that resume is the citing of "Project Café". Up til now I honestly thought it may have just been an internet-created codename that had become informally 'officialised'. I guess it really was the codename.
Nope, it is (or was) really the codename. Verified via the SDSG (Nintendo Software Development Support Group) website.

EDIT: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=27361959&postcount=16814 (doesn't work anymore as Nintendo changed the site)

every Nintendo fan seemed to love SK and Eternal Darkness and Denis Dyack seemed to love Nintendo so it was like love all around he posted on IGN and other forums hyping up Nintendo fans

after porting Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes to Gamecube there seem to be bad blood or something, then jumping to 360 after that and not really delivering on its promise is kinda hard

that was suppose to be a major trilogy or something since PS1 days if I remember correctly

what can they do on WiiU?

Eternal Darkness 2 is not something I want to see at all you can only use that gimmick once what is the point of the insanity effects if you already expect them to happen

Indeed!

I really, really hope this is another little detail that may be adding-up for an epic E3..

It would basically make my E3 (especially if it has Biometric Feedback support). In fact, besides Skies of Arcadia 2, I can't think of a bigger third party title (Yes I know the IP is owned by Nintendo) that would get me more hyped then Eternal Darkness 2.

Scratch that, a Fumito Ueda developed title would be bigger then anything else. I wonder where he will land after the Last Guardian is finished.....

Yeah.. the chances of that happening would be.. uber-small.
yuk yuk!

But still, GTAV at launch is an instant seller for me.

In all honesty, with hardly any info on games or the system itself, the launch line up is actually shaping up to be fantastic.

GTAV, Ass 3, Darksiders II, and Pikmin 3 all at launch... Man, I'll be set for ages.

I'm sure that, with a bit of imagination, they could come-up with some new effects. The key to this game would be to not spoil oneself before playing. Total media blackout.

Wii only failing was not geting multiplatform games. With wii U coming out first it's hard to say if they will or if they get the next gen multiplatforms before others and be the lead

This is nice. I think we're all dreaming of a GTAV timed exclusive for Wii U. Say, month or so until it releases on other systems. Won't happen though.

al we would need is GTAV exclusive to next gen... that would mean a couple of things:

- short time exlusive for Wii U
- press Microsoft and Sony to release their console ASAP

This somewhat-confirmed/somewhat-deduced/somewhat-assumed launch lineup is already sounding quite strong. But I can't help but be skeptical of Rockstar.. they've been kinda cockteasing Nintendo consoles with this series for years now.

I'm pretty sure we all knew the insanity effects were going to happen before we bought the first one. Hell I even spoiled the actual effects for myself, but it still didn't change the fact that Eternal Darkness is an amazing game and one of the best horror games of all-time. It's also in the top 10 reviewed Gamecube games (and the only one not the receive a sequel).

By the way, June is Eternal Darkness's 10 year anniversary. Can't believe it has been that long....

Yeah, this is what I mean. If it releases next year like some say, then for a few months, Wii U would get the game before Durango releases in the Spring/Summer.

did not look so next gen strong in the trailer but GTA has never been about pushing graphics

it would be nice if this was the case but this is about $$$ for rockstar

Nah, probably wouldn't work. With most gamers believing wholeheartedly that WiiU is no more powerful than the 360, you'll hear a lot of "I'll just wait till it's ported to the 360/PS3" even though it might not happen. Plus, like you said, it would be a timed exclusive, making it so that gamers would still wait on the next 2 consoles to get it.

do you really think that?
You are a gamer like we all here...
So it doesnt matter which game it is, if you really want a game and its out on a platform that you dont own you will buy the platform to play it.
Believe me you will not wait for another 1, 2 or 3 months to play it on a platform you also would have to buy first.
Beside that it will definately go on your nerves if you hear ppl arround you talking about a game that you also really want...
Hope you got my point.
There is a reason why some games are considered systemsellers...

Nintendo has stated, they will implement online unlike we find on any other console. So obviously they have something unique brewing. Will it be better? Who knows, but you cant count on Nintendo being different.

It's just that the nintendo difference usually shoots them in the foot--at least console wise anyway

While I understand your point, try to understand mine. I've been to other sites (with Gametrailers and IGN being some examples) where they will bitch, whine, and/or complain about a game that isn't on the system they want it to be on. Instead of getting the system for the games to be released/ are already on it, they bitch about how much they want it on another system.

For example, Resident Evil: Revelations was made for/ released on the 3DS. Instead of just getting a 3DS, many people bitched about it needing to be on the Vita, how they will wait for a port, that may never happen. This also happened when Tasunoko vs Capcom was released on the Wii. With GTA V, they KNOW it will be released on another console, and they will wait.

Did you saw the Kid Icarus AR Cards madness ? With exclusive ones available in special events on Retail, Publications, Club Nintendo, etc ?

It's a full wide promotional effort. We can draw some conclusions for the future marketing politic of Big N concerning the Wii U, furthermore with the inclusion of NFC. Expect new things for your games through these PAC (Physical Additional Content), a way to complement the DLC while pleasing stores & the medias, and creating some buzz.

It will be huge, i said it, the completionists around here will have a headache, between Nintendo Store NY NFC figurines for Mario Kart Wii U that will add new kart models, cards or tie-in products like food packages, magazines, from which you'll have unique outfits for cosmetic-purposes in Zelda, accessories for your Mii's, modifications/additions to apps, etc. We can also expect cross-features between the AR 3DS cards & the Wii U, if it can't handle them with the front camera or another one.

And it's paving the way for a distant Nintendo digital distribution approach, by limiting and controlling it through the acquisition of physical supports for NFC/Codes to read by the hardware, and by completing it with additional content.

Well, as gamers, if the software stay the same in terms of depth, and we have all that in plus, like in the Kid Icarus case (the game is very rich AND has AR cards), i'm in :)

This right here.

The Skylanders craze should be enough to show people how big it's going to be. If they base the next Mario Kart around this it will be insane.

Think about it--release a full-featured Mario Kart game. Then each month following, release two new racers and/or track figures that can be used in the game. It will be nuts.

I know such ppl, but for me (the way you described them) that are no real gamers.
If I really want a game, then I will buy it where it will be released first.

And I believe that 90% of the ppl cant resist to buy a game (plus plattform) if it comes out there first (time exclusive)

And it's going to have to be a really strong E3 with all boxes checked completely, and no sign of weakness at all that fanboys can whine about.

If Nintendo relied on just the Fanboys, I could agree with you, but the Wii proved that it isn't the fanboys that are going to bring Nintendo Success (or Sony, or Microsoft for that matter), at least not solely. Nintendo may be marketing the Wii U towards a more traditional demographic currently, but thanks to the Wii, there is now a huge split between the Core and Casual gamer (the latter of which is going to want an evolution of the casual game, much like the 2d side scrolling platforms of old have evolved into something like an Uncharted/Assassins Creed), so much so that in my opinion, no console will be successful without properly supporting both demographics. Nintendo and Apple are the only two companies I think that realize this.

I just received a reply from Michael French at MCV regarding the opposition of the Wii U trademark in EU (UK to be specific) and other problems Nintendo is seeing with this. He said he would have a look at it, so hopefully we'll soon have a juicy article. I assume the team at MCV can succeed at persuading a couple o' people to talk, at least better than I did.

Thank you based UK trademark.

The last 10 pages:

- Cakes
- Pokemon
- Final Fantasy
- Sonic not coming for Wii U
- Mark Rein writing off Wii U and saying MS and Sony had better beef up or Apple will doom them to failure (lol)
- suggestions of GTA exclusivity (lol guys c'mon)

Did I miss anything?

Maybe i missed something because i can't recall Rein writing off WiiU.

Rein writting off the Wii U?

Didn't he praised it?

He actually said he'd be shocked if it didn't sell well. Not sure what StevieP is talking about.

He did not reference the Wii U when talking about next gen systems. Just MS and Sony and how they should increase their power over their presumably current alpha dev kits. He's happy about the Wii U in the sense that he can easily sell UE3 for it, unlike the Wii or 3DS.

I agree, I have had this conversation about the launch timing. I said I think the Wii U will come out closer to September then November for that very reason. Games like Darksiders 2, AC3 and other popular games can't afford to be out on other consoles for a while before the Wii U version. A game like Darksiders 2 this will be unavoidable because it is coming out so soon, but other third party games Nintendo can be ready for if it launches just a month or two earlier then November.

You are right, if someone is super hyped for a game they will get it on the first platform they can, if AC3 comes out October 30th someone that really wants the game will buy it for their PS3/360 on that day, they won't wait for the Wii U. Timed exclusives are the same way, I buy most multiplat games for my PS3 right now (360 used to be my multiplat choice) but if a games came out for another console first I wouldn't wait, if I really wanted that game.

Yeap, and I think that some game release dates allready give a very good hint about the wii u release
