Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

StarFox could be THE game to demonstrate all of what Wii U is if people would be a little creative:

- Excellent graphical showcase with the scale of the levels and number of enemy units on screen at a time. Great audio and VA clarity thanks to roomy discs and HDMI digital audio support.

- Four player online multiplayer/coop with each padlet having real time video feed of your four person party chatting it up and playing along with you, thus showing off Wii U's online potential.

- Asymmetric game play where padlet controls Great Fox and players try to play different flight combat modes like capture the (moving) flag or main game coop with Great Fox dropping bombs on things or leaving care packages to underperforming squad members

Basically, take StarFox 64 as a base, add liberal amounts of online interaction and new campaign material, drop everything that isn't Top Gun tier one liners an a simple "omg, we're getting fucked up! StarFox group, go and fuck them up harder!" for the story, keep the different ship mechanics, drop on foot missions unless they get all Sin & Punishment styled and to accommodate online, maybe make factions like the Star Fox 4 man cell, the Star Wolf four person cell, and maybe one or two more cells (Bill & four randoms from the space fleet at Katina/Katt & some randoms for the last group?) to accomodate 12 - 16 player madness in multiplayer or different campaigns for the coop main game.

what StarFox fans need to understand is Sales = More games

I think Nintendo tested the waters with StarFox 3DS remake, no matter how many ideas we can have for StarFox what is the deman like for this series?

My fantasy starfox game idea I wrote up awhile ago:

Of course single player would be a spiritual successor to SF64 that has on rails, points based aerial combat with multiple branching paths and bosses in each level. I'm thinking probably 16-20 levels, multiple medals to unlock, and online leaderboards. That's the easy part.

For the online multiplayer, you'd of course have your standard deathmatches, but you'd have squad based combat with anywhere from 2 to 32 players. You could play 1v1, 3v3, 4v4, 8v8, 16v16, or free for all matches. There would be both open, nonranked matches and ranked matches. Ranked matches would net you points depending on how well you played, allowing you to purchase upgrades for your Arwing such as increased bomb capacity, speed, turning speed, etc. However, you wouldn't be able to upgrade all stats at the same time. With each rank you gain there would be a cap on how many upgraded parts you could use.

There would also be a new mode that would heavily employ the use of the Upad and asymmetrical gameplay. Squadrons would consist of 4 Arwing captains that actively play on the battlefield. A single fifth player on each side would act as commanding admirals who utilize the Upad's touch screen to issue RTS-like commands on the battlefield. Each squadron is tasked with destroying their enemy's base's central core while protecting their own. Teams could either use pre-made bases or the commanding admiral could craft their own. Admirals would have ranks that give them access to a limited number of building blocks and pieces, all of which have variable defensive and offensive capabilities. They could build their bases in a minecraft-esque fashion surrounding the base's central core. Each base would also be forced to have a certain number of weak points incorporated in its structure that are susceptible to attack. As admirals level up in rank by playing matchmaking ranked matches, they'd be given additional piece to improve their base.

During matches, admirals would have access to multiple unit types in limited quantities. There would be repair units that can rebuild damaged portions of the base, and multiple offensive unit types would exist, all of which could be upgraded, that the admirals can direct and position on the map simply by drawing on the touchscreen. Specific rally points could be used to dictate areas to either attack or defend. They could assign NPC units to squad leaders who can use them in multiple formations to maximize offense or defense. Admirals would have to balance creating offensive and defensive units due to limited resources. Squad leaders could rally any nearby friendly NPCs, but admirals have ultimate say and could always redirect them. As points rack up on either side, admirals could deploy care packages with power ups and bombs to anywhere on the map. These care packages could also be used by the opposing team, so placement would be very important. Squad leaders could of course use their custom built Arwings and would have unlimited lives, but NPC units would be limited and deaths would result in a reduction of points.

GODDAMN, I know I'm ranting, but I've been thinking about this hypothetical game for a long time. It makes me sad because I know it'll never get made...
:-(

oh ok, that's makes sense

what would be the point of having the card/toy then? better stats if you have the card of the pokemon you own?

I think the AR cards need to be in the main gameplay at least for me

KI's AR card just seem to be a collect them all thing and maybe Pokemon will do the same and keep it as a side thing... you need the game to scan your cards so that the 3D models from the game are the ones rendered for the card... after all the card is just a shape that the AR reads

but I not see how they get competitive with the AR yet

your friend's card vs your card if they could find a way to level up the winner of the match in game somehow or have a leaderboard for AR card fights... there needs to be a way to have ownership of a Card so that it is recognized as your card and someone else card is theres.

Trading complicates things even more - mixing digital and physical is not that simple

Not only is your idea a lot of what I was thinking Guek, somewhere around the middle of the third point paragraph, I began to wonder about an old design document I made for a ZOE meets Gurren Lagaan type of game with similar mechanics. :lol

Point is, Wii U could be the ultimate "squadron based game" console.

I wish they took some of that time and effort to properly resurrect starfox...*sigh*

I kind of think that Kid Icarus: Uprising is the next starfox. I mean, obviously it's not starfox, but it is the same sort of game. If you replaced the kid with the arwing, and the enemies with... starfox enemies, y'know where I'm going here.

I think Nintendo set out to make a shooter, and decided to use the Kid Icarus IP instead of Star Fox, simple as that. I know there are differences between Kid Icarus and Star Fox, but hell, there are (plenty of) differences between the original Kid Icarus and Uprising.

Maybe they'll make a Star Fox for Wii U, but if Uprising does gangbusters, which shooter franchise would YOU continue?

He is completely overlooking the full-range mode and the tank missions. Which were awesome. What would Star Fox 64 be without Katina? Star Wolf missions? The awesome hover tank.

The on-foot mechanics in multiplayer also worked. Which means EAD could have pulled of on-foot missions as well.

Don't dismiss the broad design of Star Fox on crappy games from RARE and Namco. EAD is in a different league when it comes to creating intuitive mechanics.

Damn, that's difficult. I love the Icarus world more, but the StarFox characters and memories..

It'd be like choosing a favorite child.

Mixed feelings.. I could see Nintendo running wild with Icarus.

I'm sure they plan on doing another Starfox eventually, but who knows when =/

Before Starfox I'm positive we will see a new Mario, new sports Mario, new Zelda, new Pikmin (duh), some revival of a game on wiiu. Who knows if we see a new fzero or fire emblem on wiiu before Starfox though. The real question is, do we get Super Smash before a new Starfox, I know most people would perfer that, but I want a new full blown HD Starfox.

you guys never get bored of talking about old IPs?

my excitement for them is fairly low on the WiiU even in HD I am looking forward to new IPs

the IP I was most excited about on WiiU was Xenoblade but thanks to NOA I am still a month away from getting it on my Wii... I may not even open the package and save it to play on my uPad

I was never that into Star Fox, but to those of you who were: aren't you excited about Uprising? I mean, to me (without a lot of Star Fox knowledge) it's a shooter, Star Fox is a shooter, what's not to like? Is it because it's an angel flying around instead of a fox in a ship?

It's still a shooter, there are still ground sections, looks like there's even vehicles on the ground sections. I realize it's not the same as Star Fox (nobody else in your squad, flying with you) but it's entirely possible that a new Star Fox would also not be the same - look how much they've changed franchises in the past!

So basically, I wonder if it's nostalgia and fondness for the Fox making some people keep wishing for Star Fox when it seems to me that Uprising may be exactly what they want - a brand new awesome Nintendo shooter.

It's depressing, yet, at the same time, Nintendo brings one or two of them back often enough to give cruel hope that, someday, somehow, your favorite IP will return.

I'm loving Rhythm Heaven, and it saddens me that the Wii version bombed. Our chances of seeing another one are pretty rotten. Bummer.

It never charted on NPD but IIRC it was the 5th best selling 3DS game of last year just behind Street Fighter. It outsold Pilotwings and easily went over the 100k mark.

Oh I am very excited for Uprising, infact I've been hyped for it since the second they announced it. The recent good reviews and word coming out from people playing it has me even more hyped, but my memories of Starfox still makes me want a NEW starfox on WiiU.

I was just rewatching the sensational Captain Harlock CG trailer and now I want a CH game on the WiiU

pretty sure games will come out when movie gets released so well, i'd like it

that was random

Yeah I can understand that, if you've got a favorite series another series won't scratch that itch, even if it's the same genre.

And for what it's worth, I'd like to see a StarFox HD as well =) Just 'cause I was never really on that bandwagon doesn't mean I won't hop on now! Hell bring ALL the franchises back and into glorious HD/subscreen/online <heart bursts>

I was under the assumption that all range and stuff like the tank and sub (Aquas was goddamned awesome, don't hate) were in the idea as well, but yea agreed with everything here.

so Sakurai should reboot Starfox?

Nope, EAD4(?) should. We've been overdue.

Accept no substitutes.

I'm imagining the reactions of the hardcorier-than-thous pushing so damn hard for this bleeding when they end-up stuck with such titles. Poetic.

Which is why I've always thought listening to forum goers only works when it's in a "Does this aiming feel off to you?" way.

If they only have input after the fact. Though so many devs end up spouting the same tired things. "WE MUST HAVE 8 GB'S!"

It's like they all want the videogame industry to have the appeal of other niche industries like comic books. Not realizing that way lies a destructive path. The path of no profits.

agree... the idea is interesting, but before trying it out you better make sure to figure out every single point and consequence of every single gameplay design...

i've gotta say that NFC is one of the things of the wii u the most pique my interest from a creative point of view.

I love this hobby too damn much to see it spiral into this, but the writing is there. This is going to sound like exceptional blasphemy on a forum like GAF, but really I feel like sometimes I should hate companies like Epic for getting everyone to bite on the PR lines. Their job is selling engine tech, I understand. Games can look endlessly brilliant with the right tech, understood as well. I just feel as though if the publishers will sway the console design folks like that, there's only going to be more bleeding before any kind of scab forms on the previous damages.

it did pretty decent in japan. It'll probably stay a handheld game though

*insert infected scab joke metaphor here*

That I didn't know. This is a bit of a relief, although I love Fever's music blasting from surround sound speakers..

Sadly Mario Party 9 is selling great compared to Rhythm Heaven at least in the stores I run. Not saying anything against party you party fans, but I feel like Rhythm is the game I'd rather play and see more of in the future, pad version on WiiU could have some interesting things.

ok, speaking of new IPs if you had to choose between a new IP from EAD Tokio or a new IP from Retro what would you pick and why?
and most of all what genre would you want that game to belong to?

Well, Nintendo, at least, saw the writing on the wall.
They're trying to keep up, but not at such a pace that would kill them off.

Kinda cliche, but I want Retro to try their hand at a Thief-like stealth game set in Europe, circa 1890.. right as the industrial revolution was getting underway. Seeing Paris newly-electrified, the coal smokestacks of London, etc etc..

At this point I'd like to see EAD do a new IP as Retro are on a really good roll with developing new versions of classics. Not saying I'd not want to see a new IP from Retro, but THEY are someone I'd like to see do a new Starfox for example or Zelda as everyone mentions. I'd like to see what EAD could come up with in this new age of HD updated graphics for them (a 1080p beautiful hand drawn 2D side scroller new IP from them would be nice).

mm that gets me to rethink my position, that could be interesting.

Tough choice, but I think I'd go Retro just because I want some form of sprawling Adventure title not limited to anything regarding Zelda or the current top tier Nintendo IPs. It would also be fun to see Retro's capacity for humor be put to some use.

I probably would have said EAD Tokyo before, but I just can't think of what they'd do outside of a platformer. This isn't to say platformers are bad (they're my favorite genre period) or that's all they can do but I simply can't fathom the nature of their "attack" (re: what they'd do in any other genre) Earthbound style.

mm that gets me to rethink my position, that could be interesting.

Stealth is a genre that is sorely missing from the Nintendo library. I usually go to the Elder Scrolls series to get my sneaking/theiving fix when I'm in the mood..

And I'm flexible on the decade. 1930s Europe could also be incredible. :)

love the idea, and i see that i'm not the only one in need of some news regarding Thief 4 XD

1890 and 1920 are my favorites decades, maybe because i spent too much time playing the call of cthulhu

EAD.

Nothing would be better than a new Miyamoto IP with Koji Kondo composing.

Retro has their hands full at the moment with Zelda =P

Did you enjoy Wii Fit? Wii Music? Steel Diver? Weren't those "Miyamoto's new ip'? But is it fair to call a new EAD Kyoto or EAD Tokyo game "Miyamoto's new baby"?

Yep! I like the time frames, the 90s technologically and the 20-30s culturally. Both decades have fashion that isn't overdone in gaming and incredible historical backdrops to play off of, and the 20s-30s have potential for some really great sneaking musicl I could see really oblique slang from those times being heavily-implemented into the dialogue as well.

I want to see a 80s-90s aesthetic inner city RPG based around a "Hey Arnold!" like community. The main party would perform in events like impromptu danceoffs/music battles in place of the traditional random enemy battles. One person takes a base melody and re arranges it on the fly, one would be designated dancer moving to the music DDR style with twists, one would manipulate a saved voice or sound clip to "fake" singing, and the last member hypes the crowd they perform in front of Paper Mario: TTYD style.

[/totally not a concept he's working on but just wanted to throw out as a potential awesome fit on Wii U]

>.>

I mean real games.

He hasn't made one since 2001 (Pikmin).

And Kondo has only done Mario and Zelda for as long as I could remember. I think hsi last non Mario/Zelda game was Star Fox 64. Want to make a new IP resonate with audiences? Settle for nothing less than Kondo-sama.

Some news, MoSys' 1T-SRAM (or other technologies from that company) will not be represented in the Wii U:

Source: http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/890394/000104746912002721/a2207956z10-k.htm

Now, the 1T-SRAM technology licensing has changed, as I wrote here, as Invensas purchased a greater number of patents from MoSys in 2011. This may have lead to Nintendo ditching this technology. What it means for backwards compatibility, seeing as Wii incorporates the 1T-SRAM technology, I don't know. However, the secrets are starting to unfold. Now, I wonder what company Nintendo has chosen for RAM solutions.

Rösti;36066970 said:
Just for comparison following these news of no MoSys involvement with the Wii U, here's what the contemporary consoles (and some from previous generations) use for main memory:

PlayStation 3: XDR DRAM by Rambus
Xbox 360: GDDR3 by Qimonda or Samsung
iPad 2: LPDDR2 RAM by Samsung
PS Vita: Mobile-DDR2-S4 SDRAM by Samsung

Nintendo 64: RDRAM by Rambus
Nintendo Gamecube: 1T-SRAM by MoSys
Wii: 1T-SRAM by MoSys
Nintendo 3DS: FCRAM by Fujitsu

I don't know what Nintendo DS uses, so it's not included here.

Out of these, Fujitsu has mainly got RAM solutions for mobile applications and is probably not a good contender unless a custom chip has been made. This is confusing to say the least.

We do all realise that the AAAA is ludicrous, i mean what does it actually mean, same goes for AAA. They should just refer to "AAA" games as a publishers main franchises.
