Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

As things look right now (read: if any of the rumours are to be believed), the Wii U is going to be the only console next-gen with any kind of BC that isn't digital.

Yeah.. and I'm always amazed at the shitstorm that this topic elicits every time those rumor threads come-up.

Just keep the sexy GameCube around.
I gave it away to my nieces/nephews about five years ago. I still visit it from time to time, and miss it much.
The Wii will handle GCN duties well enough..

Yes. But not with GameCube games.

D: That's really too bad. I wonder if it's partly because they plan to make GC games available as downloadable purchases on WiiU. (Which wouldn't be all terrible. I've had hell of a time trying to find physical copies of Mario Sunshine and Windwaker for reasonable prices.)

Either that, or they plan on re-releasing them in HD at retail. That wouldn't break my heart too much..

Maybe a small bit, but as I said before, it's most a cost and size thing.

What exactly about the Japanese Garden demo was so apparently technically wanting? Draw distance?

I was so surprised to hear people complaining about it, it was the coolest thing I'd seen all week.

I can live with that
hope they're reading this... I want Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart Double Dash!! in HD :P

Just from the top of my head, I want:
Super Mario Sunshine
The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition
Mario: 25th Anniversary Collection
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Eternal Darkness

And if there's no new F-Zero installment coming, I also want GX.

So yeah.. Nintendo knows that they can have their way with my wallet..

Well, it was fairly simple in design, but it was very technically well done.

The Bob Ross game was not an April Fools joke. Look it up.

I saw that on a certain banned website after I posted it. Still bummed out about it, but if they ever want to make it up to us, there is a certain pad coming that will prove to be quite nice for artistic aoplications..

If they already did it with Zelda and Star Fox on 3DS they better have something good
for Wii U talking about HD classics.

I'd buy Metroid Prime Trilogy for third time in a heartbeat if they release it in HD

I'm betting that Nintendo will put out their own "test game" - an HD compilation disc for one of their headliner series. I'd predict that it'll happen sometime in the first year. If it does well, they'll move down their own list of prospects and rake that money in.

Good grief, GC component cables now go between 100-150 dollars on ebay! So yeah, I guess selling my Wii and putting my GC alongside the WiiU will not be an option.

My Wii's system name is "WiiNES." I'd love it if they'd figure out a way to incorporate the NES name again.

I gave it away(traded it in to Gamestop to get the DS Lite or something) and I regret it.

I only kept a handful of titles for it too and regret that as well.

I wish I kept much more of the games I had for it.

And possibly full used games compatibility.

I'm not sure if that I want to see that kind of move pan-out for the other two consoles. The amount of drama that would ensue..

Will it make a big difference to consumers?
Would this kind of thing actually change gamers' shopping decisions?

I'm a bit skeptical. If you want to play Halo 4, this isn't going to magically stop that desire, driving you into the waiting arms of Nintendo.

Then, I wonder if developers/publishers will use this as The Final Excuse to give Nintendo the finger once and for all. If Nintendo is the odd one out on this issue, it could hurt. Badly, perhaps.

And how would retailers react? Surely they won't stop selling software and hardware and accessories for these systems. Heck, maybe there'll even be a used system where key code-like elements are incorporated.

Either way, the issue's gonna boil over sooner or later.

Oh God I hope they do.

F-Zero GX
Wind Waker
Twilight Princess
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Metroid Prime

God, any first party titles.

Release a HD version of Metroid Prime Trilogy, Nintendo. DO IT!

Wii is such a culturally significant consumer brand they'd be insane to drop it. I don't think there is going to be any mass market confusion between Wii and Wii U.

I know I'm in the minority, but I've always dug the Wii U name. Although, admittedly, I thought they should have gone with Wii 2.

Actually, I don't think it will matter if it does well or not. GC and even Wii games in HD could fill the spaces between big titles and the unavoidable drought all the Nintendo consoles suffer during their lifespan.

EDIT: LOL I didn't notice I'm not a Junior Member anymore :D

I would buy a compilation. I don't like the ala cart model though.

Someone shop Reggie onto here! (please?)

Haven't seen that before!

Opposing remarks would continue to criticize Nintendo for re-releasing titles akin to Ocarina of Time. They'd be beautiful, but how possible, really?

It's entirely because they don't want spend the extra on dual diameter loading slot drive. Those things can't have been cheap.

Extra GCN VC sales are just a bonus atop the major saving they'll make with the cheaper optical drives.

The more I think about it, the more I think you're right. Those games are going to sell, regardless - and this is the part I forgot: they won't cost much time or effort or money for development either. Easy money for Nintendo.

There are also probably a number of gamers out there who might have missed games from the GameCube and/or Wii eras, and so HD compilation editions might be verrrry appealing to these folks thinking about catching-up.

I could see Nintendo going for a positive reinforcement approach -- rather than block used games, simply reward those who buy new. They already kind of do that with registering games for coins/stars/whatever, which only works once per copy. They could make registering automatic as part of the new Nintendo Network and include third party titles. (Wait, do they already include third party titles with the current manual registration system? I've never actually bothered with it...)

They could also scrap the coins/stars and simply offer specific digital rewards per game. For example, buy a new copy of Zelda Wii U and receive a free download of LttP HD Edition (lol). Those who buy used miss out on the bonus.

they can cash big time with GameCube games AGAIN so they better grab that opportunity by the balls

Further integration of Club Nintendo with the console is another thing that's up on my wish list for the U's feature list. Maybe a Club Nintendo Channel where we can easily access our accounts?

Iwata did suggest after E3 last year that we need to look to the 3DS for hints about how they are going to handle many things with the Wii U, and we've seen several instances where a brand new retail game purchase also meant that the buyer would get a free download of an older title from the same series. So you may well be onto something there..

(and yes, we do see third-party games included in Club Nintendo offers from time to time. It'd be very smart on Nintendo's part to widen their inclusion of more and more titles..)

I always envision Nintendo forgoing achievements in the traditional sense and having a virtual collection system of sorts. Sort of like that of Super Smash Bros's trophies. I don't know if a virtual collectible is enticing to all gamers, but anything to help, eh?

I would be one of those people opposed. I liked Ocarina 3D, but we've got to stop relying on the past at some point.

Edit: Ack, sorry for the doubleP.

I wonder about a possibility--Could some developers make SD games for the padlet with better graphics by putting the maximum rendering performance toward the visuals, with more complex geometry, lighting, shaders, etc, by NOT using HD resolutions? I'm totally drunk so that didn't come out the way I wanted to say it, but I'd like to know if this is feasible.

Its feasible but I wouldn't want to see that. I would like to see perhaps better IQ, with killer AA on the tablet.

I agree. There's at least 10 Gamecube games I would love to re-buy in HD.

If they can put full retail Wii U games up for digital download, I don't see why they can't put Wii and GameCube games up for download.

So I've been curious to see what I could do to shave some weight off the Wii U's tablet.

Changelist:

>Moved power button and battery indicator to the top right of the camera
>Greying of the camera's surrounding bezel is intentional; less distracting, although I understand it is to prevent glare(is it?)
>Speakers moved to be in line with the bottom of the screen
>pads moved to be in line with the top of the screen
>pads are slightly larger; recoloured onyx to stand out
>D-pad enlarged, D-pad and buttons moved more snuggly to the screen
>Home, start and select moved beneath the XYABs
>Monochrome Wii U logo added in its place

Overall I think that's about 3/4 of an inch of height reduced.

What do you think?

The + and - buttons could actually be used in games with that design. Not that it would be very practical.

Pretty nice, I did a space shave a while back. I didn't really change much, I just moved everything in towards the screen.

I think I'm going to do a complete redesign tomorrow.

I like it! I see you're embracing the Panda idea. :P

Haha! Yes indeed, that actually did cross my mind. :P

I would be happy with yours as well, it looks much better and considerably less bulky when that height is taken away.

I like the larger d-pad; it always seemed a tidbit on the small end, but I wasn't going to say anything befoew trying it.

I also like that you moved the Home/Start/Select buttons to where they're more easily-reachable during gameplay. Makes good sense.

I do not want to hit the home button when i'm in the midst of some gaming action. Not sure if that could happen in this situation.

That is a concern, but typically the edge of your palm will be in that area, and the home button looks recessed enough that you'd have to press pretty hard to accidentally trigger it.
