Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Overall, Nintendo proved their console is graphically capable of meeting or exceeding current gen HD consoles at E3 2011, no matter how akward and confusing the presentation was.

I think at E3 2012 they'll blow us all away with the games.

I'm still waiting to see if there are one or two jaw-droppers from third parties. As time goes by, I'm thinking more and more that Nintendo's third-party future lies within Japanese developers.. and I'm hoping that Nintendo can convince them:
"hey.. don't underestimate us again like you did with the Wii. This time, you have a chance to be on-board from the beginning, rather than backing the wrong, expensive horse(s) again and being caught unprepared. This pad's gonna be big here [in Japan], and you're going to want a piece of that. And development might be a bit cheaper, as well."

Then again, I trust that Iwata is in the process of making this grand argument to various development houses..

Release the god-damn console now you bastards!

I just want them to come to launch with something graphically mind blowing. Be it be a Prime 4 (or other "core" Retro title), a new 3D Mario that throws around a bajillion objects or a darker, grittier Zelda. Just something to make us go "WOW" at the Wii U's abilities as opposed to just something simple like NSMBU that shows off the tablet, even if it uses it in some amazing way.

I don't think Nitntendo will say anything soon. They want a huge explosion at this E3 and if they decide the strategy then they will do it.
Public have short memory span. If Nintendo wins this E3, all the nonsense and shitstorm happening now will just be forgot totally and become another "story" to be told in the next cycle.

I know Nintendo concept demos have a way of working into games later down the track. 100 Marios - Super Mario Galaxy or Pikmin. Submarine on DS - Steel Diver etc.

I hope to see some cool bird flying game this coming generation. Hopefully in something that's not "just" a Zelda game. Something new, something with the atmosphere of the tech demo.

Birdwatching game ala Endless Ocean? :)

Agreed 100%. If anything, we'll laugh at the drama of this information drought nonsense, and the narrative will be "Nintendo knew what they were doing all along. Big surprise there, eh?"

Same here, I already made up my mind we won't get anything till E3.
They literally said nothing substantial about the console since its reveal 10 months ago so I find it kinda hard/pointless to talk about it just two months away from the conference.

IF anything... we'll hear something at their Fiscal Year Earnings Release later this month but that's it.. and even then, it won't be something big.

I'd buy it. Or a game where you play as a bird hunting for bugs and field mice etc. Catching thermals off a scarp a la eagles, it would be like pilotwings minus the pilot. And glowing rings.

Or it could be survival horror as a carrier pigeon during medieval wartime, dodging arrows from people trying to kill information flow, or trying to evade hawks.
Kind of like chibi robo seeing the indirect effects of his actions. Delivery of one message might change the war. Failure to do so would see alliances fall. You would be like a fly on the wall amidst the manouevering of spies and whatnot.

Yup. Maybe a title or two? And even then, those are going to be first-party no-brainers.

After that, it's the final distance to E3.. the stretch of time from the end of April to the start of June is going to feel like an eternity. But it'll be great time to catch-up on some gaming - that is, if you can concentrate without wanting to come in here repeatedly to hit F5..

Day friggin' One. Hot damn, that actually sounds like a decent premise!
(Please include stealth missions.. so good..)

The bird demo doesn't even look all that impressive to me.
That's because it's hideous current-gen crap. My delicate, Bambi-like eyes are offended at its brute ugliness. Nintendo fails again.

I cross posted this in AusGAF, but idea being more fleshed out:

I have an idea for a videogame. It's been borne out of/coalesced as a semi-coherent concept in the Wii U discussion thread, but it's also something I've had in mind for years and years.

Premise: You play as a bird. Could be that you have to live as a bird (i.e hunting for prey, drifting on thermals and timing your attacks on fieldmice etc) but it needs a backdrop.

Setting: medieval wartime (think game of thrones using messenger birds). Survival horror as a carrier pigeon. You are tasked with taking messages from one place to another. You might get shot at with arrows as you leave or arrive bringing news someone doesn't want to be revealed. You can get attacked by hawks or eagles. You have weather elements to contend with, like wind, hail, storms. You need to eat. You need to catch favourable thermal updrafts for high speed travel.

Story is revealed to you as a consequence, either indirectly or directly as a result of your mission success. Deliver one message and an alliance is formed, changing the course of war. Fail to reach it on time and the alliance fails, shifting the power balance of several factions.

Like Chibi Robo, where you see a family dynamic change as their life is made easier by your actions in cleaning up the house, you also have expository dialogue of sorts. You get to hear the musings of people who receive your messages. You can choose whether to deliver it or not along the way, or accidentally go to the wrong place.

Gameplay conceits could work well: pigeons have excellent navigation skills to allow for a GTA style radar map.

And if you get really bored you can shit on people's heads via a dedicated button. Wii U control pad screen would serve as an excellent perspective for "bombing runs" down busy streets.

And as per your request for stealth missions, how about high profile poop targets on the heads of VIPs, or evading a particularly vicious predator like a peregrine falcon by flying through a heavily forested area and making mad dashes across open plains.

You could also chill out and fly around the landscape, Crackdown style trying to reach the tops of mountain ranges a la Agency Tower, or just explore nooks and crannies of woods and shit seeing people in small bands of thieves or farms etc interacting.

I can feel it? Can you? Nikkei will leak something before Iwata's keynote.....

This is going to be where I miss Matt at IGN. He always seemed to have decent leaks for the week right before E3. I'm rackin' my brain trying to come-up with anyone else who has been so utterly consistent at this kind of thing..

Hints at most... something like that Sega/Namco/Capcom game for 3DS, it only will cause blue balls :(

And yeah, May will be the toughest month of all. I mean.. so close, yet so far? Damn! And don't even get me start with the week before E3 :S like you said, is going to feel like an eternity :(

I'm more concerned about GAF crashing that day tho...
I have to start looking for external sources if that tragedy happens.

Chase Mii/Battle Mii should be a game.

How long have you been sitting on (nesting..? eh? eh?) this idea? It's bloody brilliant, and makes me weep at the monotony of games that we see on the shelves. A bird, changing the course of history. And I love the Chibi Robo comparison. I've never done the kickstarter thing, but for this, hell yes.

Ive had the vague idea of a game where you play as a bird maybe several years ago. With no context, however.

Other than that, since the time you mentioned Endless Ocean up above.

Yeah.. we're gonna need to come-up with a backup location.

And the Bambi thing I mean in all seriousness. How in the hell did some of these folks make it through the graphics of earlier generations? (gonna stop myself from ranting here.)

Shame about herzog. That silly "Nthing" (ugh.. another topic I'll bite my tongue on) took the bait.

Haven't seen this posted yet, but IGN is reporting that the Wii U release date has been leaked by a Japanese retailer, with a date of November 18th, 2012 for the US. The article is here: http://wii.ign.com/articles/122/1222182p1.html

It was discussed a few pages back :P

Anyway... I was lurking DeviantArt and I saw this
Seriously! this looks fucking awesome!
Metroid Prime 4: Redemption needs to happen.
It could help as a reboot of the franchise and erase the Other M nightmare from people's mind.

I live for a gritty/dark Metroid game!!!

Ubisoft aiming to be number one third-party (publisher) for Wii U:

"We have big plans for Wii U. Our intention is to be the number one third-party on Wii U, just like we were on Kinect and just like we were on 3DS," Key told Gamasutra in a recent interview.

"We've always had a really close relationship with Nintendo, so I'd venture to say that we did have an advantage in getting dev kits earlier than other people," Key said. "I'm not saying we got them earlier than everyone, but I do think we got them early.

I don't mind Assassin's Creed III, Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, Far Cry 3 and such, but if they start to put as much shovelware on Wii U as they did on Wii I don't know what to say.

Ubi is still on my shit list for apologizing for trash titles in 2007 - only to follow-up that apology with more shit titleZ. I don't trust them as far as I can throw them, and they can kiss the fattest part of my skinny ass.

And did anyone see this?

GI Biz: Developers see costs double for Durango sequels to Xbox 360 titles #1

Developers with access to the Durango (the code name for Microsoft's next console) are seeing costs rise sharply, primarily due to higher polygon counts and better textures required. "I'm having to double my budget for models," said one developer working on a sequel to an earlier title that appeared on Xbox 360 and PS3. "If we want to take advantage of Durango's capabilities it takes a lot more time for each model." This can also result in either a longer time to develop a title, or the need to put more artists on, or both.

Similar budget issues are expected for the PlayStation 4 (codename 'Orbis') and the Wii U. The Wii U's development costs will be higher than Wii titles due to increased resolution, but utilizing the tablet controller will also mean additional time in design. Some uses for the tablet controller seem obvious, like diagramming plays in a Madden game using your finger. Using the tablet controller in other games may be more challenging, depending on how much the developers want to create something unique for the Wii U (spending extra on that development that is not needed for other platforms).

At a time when many console titles have been finding it more difficult to make a profit, the prospect of doubling already considerable budgets is not making publishers happy. They are already looking to find ways to increase the revenue potential of their development efforts.

At this point, I say bring it on. Nintendo needs to build the gaming/financial equivalent of a doom bunker, and they need to tell their best developer buddies essentially, "come with me if you want to live."

I'm utterly convinced that this is going to be the only way that the industry learns what will be a much-needed lesson.

The more they put on the Wii U the better, I'd rather have all multiplatforms and exclusive shovelware then neither of both... hopefully Ubisoft also looks at putting forward another red steel too, with Wiimote+... Nintendo really needs to sneak one into the box. BTW rayman origins and rabbits were both pretty fun. Nothing wrong with those games.

If this happens then I could definitely see a lot of Japanese devs shifting their focus to the Wii U. Which would lead to some interesting times.

Same story every new Nintendo console launch - Wii, 3DS and DS, IIRC. Ubisoft push out one or two good exclusive titles, a bundle of ports or cheap efforts and bingo! Number one third-party publisher! Of course, what happens after that is a different story - what of any significance have you seen from Ubi on 3DS since the launch window?

Some time ago, something in this thread prompted me to look at my games library. I was a bit surprised to see how Japan-heavy the developers list was.

I'd be a-OK with this.

Also with prices so high, I can definitely see Devs down-porting EVERY game to Wii U.

Either that or PS4/Xbox720 games are going to cost 70 or 80 a pop just to help with recouping loses.

next gun just look like PS360 game anyway just look at PC top end of games they not that far off and all so call next gen demo iv seen dont have a big jump

as for the bird demo go and watch the full thing that just a demo they put together Big N games alway look much better so if that the base line what the Wii U can do ill be happy and cant wait to see the top end

I don't suppose anyone here knows the answer to this but I'm curious if the bird demo had any "drift" when using the tablet to pan around the scene. On one of the YouTube videos they spend a lot of time panning at the end when it's winter. You can see a temple in the distance to the right/east. If its very accurate you could create some killer immersive effects where you have to keep tabs on several points in the distance and off screen, such as a sniper or general overseeing a battle. Hopefully we can count on the "invisible dome" being relatively stable.

$70-80 for a game.. before DLC, eh? I like. I like this a LOT.

I know that Nintendo gets knocked for its family-friendly/young audience reputation, but those other consoles, from what I gather, are the consoles of choice for middle-school and high-school boys (360 in particular). Good luck to them and their mommies & daddies in paying for the ability to see extra definition on those space marines' forehead liverspots.

I hope it's worth it.

And it'd be particularly interesting if Western devs were the ones who end-up having the most trouble financially adjusting to the very ridiculous conditions that they are demanding. No matter what, it should be fun to watch everything, umm.., unfold. Us "Nthings" will see to it that Nintendo stays afloat, hehe.. I know what my nieces and nephews (budding Nintendo fanatics themselves) are getting for Christmas this year. :)

Pretty much this, besides all my FPSs are played on my PC, though I wouldn't of minded playing something like a Geist 2, I'm mostly interested in unique games anyways, that is why yesterday, I was fighting the idea of a dudebro shooter from RETRO, let them make an adventure game that speaks to the core with a new IP, that would develop the user base for stuff like Mass Effect and GTA.

I see the crazystuff didn't die down.

Oh boy

Nah. It never really goes away, though. The Crazy is within you, and me, and all of us, just simmering below the surface. On one day, its focus is on Topic X. On another day, it's moved-on to Topic Y. Just depends.

It's part of what makes this place so fun, and this industry so rapturous to observe. Lots of passion from all different directions.

I have two "western" series that I adore - Elder Scrolls and Civilization - and I play them on the PC. With Ninty I get the best of console gaming, and with PC I get the best of western gaming; the Nintendo-PC combo is very traditonalist, as far as I see it, going all the way back to the 80s. Works quite well.

So my need for heavier western content isn't too great, although any variety of good titles and genres would be beneficial as far as attracting as wide an audience as possible is concerned.

It would certainly be interesting since I think Itagaki had a really good point about the Wii U

Incidentally, Itagaki's first impression upon seeing Wii U at Nintendo's press conference (he'd yet to try the system out himself at the time of the Impress Watch interview) was that it was designed with consideration of Japan. Japanese homes are small and thus can't have multiple televisions. This is why Japan has gone the way of the portable, Itagaki feels. He believes that Wii U's concept of letting you move the game over to the controller when the television is taken is Nintendo's attempt at combatting the trend of lower console sales in the Japanese market. "I believe it is a good idea," he said.

http://andriasang.com/comwcv/devils_third_wii_u_and_release/

I could see Nintendo pulling most (if not all) of the smaller to mid tier devs and their franchises to the Wii U exclusively. The bigger franchise could be different. But i'd expect that even many of them will end up on the system in one way or another.

Yeah, I actually play a lot of pc games, and I play a lot of my 360 games on the PC, I even bought assassin's creed for the PC when it came out for it, and to me that was the game that proved that next gen had arrived, I don't know what game that will be from this next generation, but it likely won't come with the launch of a console, that to me hasn't happened since Mario 64.

Some might say fanboyism.

But can you feel it? The buzz is in the air

I also think that if MS and Sony go for $70-80 games - not including DLC - then Nintendo would be smart to include mentions of this in its marketing. Average customers are going to see the Wii U's graphics compared to the better-if-you-look-closely graphics of the PS720, and they'll wonder why they're having to pay that extra chunk of money.

Those developers are going to think long and hard before making that kind of a risky jump again, I think. Japanese devs might end-up playing it more conservatively, I hope, aiming at the Wii U's hardware and then perhaps up-porting to the others without spending the extra millions to make it eye-bleedingly awesome.

Then again, I'm being mighty presumptuous about Sony's plans right now. I know they're in this immature dick-measuring contest with the behemoth right now, but they really can't afford another bleeding-edge experience. Especially right now. Surely they know they can't win against MS in the "let's see who can lose the most" contest.. right?

Some might say fanboyism.

But can you feel it? The buzz is in the air
Guilty as charged. Lots of people on here try to play the "oh my! look-at-how-neutral-I-am!" game, but I've long been done with dancing around it, mincing my words. But I try to be reasonable.. :)

And yeah, the fanboyism is flyin' all over the place, from all directions. It'll only get more and more remarkable as we approach the big dance..
