Wild New GPU Scam. Yes it can fool even you!

This is crazy and becoming more of a trend. Yes you can be fooled an admit I would be.

So what scammers are doing is buying say a rtx 4090/5090 "shell" of a GPU with no core and no Vram for say under $200. They then put it back together and infact the gpu will light up in a Pc like it's working. They then show a video of them running a 4090/5090 with said gpu running to show they have "working stock." The real kicker is they have the real workstation running behind the monitor or some where else and make it look like the scam GPU model is working. They then package these shells into like exact copies of the orignal boxes and reseal them back up. They even have the offical like Stickers on the boxes to show they are real. So of course you can't see if the card you are buying actually works because it's sealed and they are not going to open a brand new GPU to sell you on it. They even have photo copied receipts of real purchases and then pass them off like they are attached to these shell cards.

Joe Sucker takes this home and plugs it into his PC and no image. It lights up and looks like it's working. The problem is it's missing it's core and Ram. Joe Sucker probably paid $2500 or more in the Current GPU market while the scammer is only down a couple hundered. Great profit for the sneaky son of a bitch. What is scary is this is becoming an online thing. Good luck trying to get your money back from a website when the scammer shows they shipped you a "sealed" 4090 or 5090 because it looks real.

I will stick with my older 40xx series and stay out of the gpu market for awhile. This shit is wild!

Ebays is safe for buyers. They always side with the buyer. Super easy to get your money back.
They are scums. I sold a 4090 on there and had tracking and the customer said it didn’t get delivered even with usps sending a letter to eBay stating it had been delivered. Buyer called his bank and filled a complaint and eBay sided with him refunded his purchase and I was out a 4090!

I had to file so much paperwork with them for insurance and it took me 3 months to get any resolution! Just a complete FY and no protection for sellers!

Any reputable seller for something this expensive should be inviting a committed buyer to bring their own tower to test it, in person cash only. Selling/shipping expensive gamer stuff on Ebay is basically voluntarily conning yourself cause there's 90% chance it's a no-job basement dweller running a mail theft scam.

How safe is it for sellers to not get reverse scammed by buyers?

Had a friend sell a high end watch on eBay. The buyer claimed it was damaged and wanted to return it. When my friend got the package back, the watch wasn't in it. Filed a police report in buyers home town and everything and eBay wouldn't do shit and neither would the cops.
After my friend had that experience I will never sell anything on eBay.

Given how much used GPU's cost I just pay a few bucks more and get a new one. Much less risky that way. I realize that's not always an option if you're trying to buy a discontinued card, though. There's a place close to where I live where I can buy used electronics pretty safely. They do consignment and also help broker local deals. I've picked up a few items working through them I have been happy with.

Pre owned GPU's have been risky for close to a decade now. People selling 1080 Ti's for cheap even in 2018 were probably mined on even if they said "oh im just upgrading to the 2080 Ti"

Mining gpus are still a good deal if they're cheap and you don't plan on using them for an entire generation.

And there's no way of knowing if the previous user abused the card anyway.

You sent a $2500 item without requiring restricted signature?

That's on you.

I've only once bought a second hand gpu and I picked it up in person and saw it working, it was also "only" 250 bucks.
I've sold two gpus and in those cases they also came to pick it up and asked me if I could show it working, they also weren't more than ~100.

Buying these multi thousand dollar gpus second hand is just asking for trouble.

Wish, temu, and aliexpress do stuff like this. Sellers will prep the card and somehow have it show up as a higher tier card but in reality its an old overclocked card.

Not safe, I dread selling on ebay. I prefer facebook marketplace, in person. I sold 2 different steering wheel setups that way, I took videos etc and people trusted me. No way I would sell that kind of gear on ebay.

Did Ebay give you your money back eventually?

It’s awesome, I’ve scammed loads of free stuff from sellers.

It's already been proven that a mining GPU is more than fine, you're not even pushing the card as hard mining as you would gaming. Think about that, causal gaming is harder on a GPU then mining.

You're right. I do this at newegg all the time.

If buying any electronics second hand you deserved to be fooled.
The issue is that people are so desperate and know that all the stock is in the scalpers hands. I personally will wait for a device I want for MSRP but many people just can't for some stupid reason.

They shouldn't, it just not worth it.

There is no way I would ever want something so much that I give up on the idea of dealing with a reputable retailer and all of the legal protections and warranties associated with a first hand purchase of a brand new item.

At bare minimum I know what most people are like when it comes to looking after their stuff. Even half of you enthusiasts are disgusting cunts. And that's before we even get to the unknown of how a GPU was used before being sold. Forget it, I'm not one to take that chance. I'd rather pay the extra and get something new.

No, it can't fool me, I would NEVER buy a new or used PC part from a random guy or network, only new sealed part from well established official retailer with no question return policy

Worst idea ever to buy extremely expansive PC used parts or "new" from random folks.

It's just not worth the hassle for me. I buy new and give away old parts to family and friends.

However, I don't buy overpriced parts.
