Will humanity ever give up eating meat? When?

We know that we don't need meat. We could survive perfectly well without it and still have a healthy diet. We know that killing all these delicious animals is purely to satisfy our taste.

I fucking love eating meat. It's rare that I ever go a day without eating meat. It's pretty much impossible that I'm going to give up eating it in my lifetime. Yet I know it's wrong. I accept my hypocrisy. I assume there are many, if not most like me. Then there are the people who try to rationalize the industry of animal death catered to our particular, unnecessary appetites.

When (if ever) do you see humans having converted to an animal-free diet? How long till we're looked back as on as cruel barbarians by our future ancestors who will never know the sweet taste of a perfectly cooked steak?

I eat it and I don't think it's wrong! And I don't think we will ever stop, maybe when we are able to scientifically create exact replicas. But that's still eating meat.

When it's no longer delicious or no longer economically viable.

If it is sustainable, there is no rational reason to stop, especially if we can create artificial meat that will dissuade any morality concerns.

Unfortunately it is probably not sustainable in the extreme long term.

I don't think that it'll ever happen, or that it ever should. I don't think there's anything wrong with eating animals, though I would prefer them to be raised and slaughtered as humanely as possible.

I hope not in my life time.

I try to buy as much as I can organic and farm raised free range, etc etc.

Rather see relocalization of meat production to mom and pop operations than mass production.

If we do it won't be by choice. Global warming, a crazy world war aftermath where vegetarianism becomes the new norm, disease, etc.

We could come up with animal/human speech translators and I'll still eat 'em

its not wrong for a start, nature has shown us that. Predator/Prey balance has been going since beginnings of life on this world.

Why give it up? That looks delicious.

I don't think what we do is balance. We have entire industries and industrial mechanisms devoted to slaughter. Slightly different from the Predator/Prey cycle.

And again, I don't plan on ever giving up eating meat. I love it too much.

That picture looks beautiful. If God had the face of a piece of meat it would be that picture. With some mashed potatoes included though as his beard.

I love meat so much

Probably in the future on some first world country, maybe Canada, New Zealand or Germany.

That and lab created meat.

Anyways, I feel just like you. I feel like a hypocrite but it's so fucking delicious. The only thing that freaks me out is when I bite on cartilage or I see a big vein popping out of the cut meat. That shit gets me grossed out.

Edit: Churrasco (skirt Steak) is the best piece of steak. Can't believe you americans don't eat it; at least I couldn't find some when I went to the US; only in hispanic grocery stores.

When lab grown meat becomes a viable option it will be revolutionary. No need for slaughterhouses, no need for massive amounts of land just for cattle, fewer emissions/greenhouse gasses etc.

No, not until we have fucking replicators like Star Trek. If anything, we might simply be forced towards more sustainable sources of meat, like insects. I also take no issue with eating meat, I like it. Sucks that chickens and cows have to die, but it doesn't keep me up at night. More concerned with the method of slaughter. Being livestock is a pretty restricted, and in many cases horrible life. I see no reason they should have to suffer in death, as well.

It really is that simple.

We are omnivores.

Also, we are just straight up this. I can understand the reasoning behind wanting to rise above our base natures, but it is what we are and I'm not resisting.

Whenever possible I try to personally kill my meat. It helps me to appreciate the sacrifice of the animal. Also wild game is delicious.

I don't think we will stop until there is a near perfect tasting alternative, or people can no longer afford it (and even then, I imagine that the very rich will still eat actual meat)

its not wrong for a start, nature has shown us that. Predator/Prey balance has been going since beginnings of life on this world.

You can't bring up predator-prey balance when the population of humans are about 70x greater than the world's natural carry capacity. We haven't been strictly tied to natural ecosystems since the agricultural revolution.

We might.

Why? Because we might not have much choice. Meat is very expensive from a calorie per dollar, calorie per unit land, and calorie per gallon of oil perspective. As the population grows and oil becomes more expensive, it might become very difficult for many people to afford meat.

So . . . we might largely stop eating meat eventually. But not any time soon.

I'd like to stop and I've definitely cut way down on my meat eating . . . but I still love it.

When we perfect (including cost wise) vat grown meat and 3D printers to replicate meat while also making novel forms of meat that we couldn't have dreamed of before the technology.

Ideally I would like to hunt my own meat and not buy mass produced meat but no I don't think humanity as a whole will ever stop eating it.

We don't "need" meat?
I mean, I suppose one could live off things other than meat.
But why?
Is there an actual gain to it?

It's because skirt steak is leather when it's barely above medium rare. I'm more of a ribeye fan cooked rare.

I suppose it'll coincide when we evolve out of having sharp, canine teeth and our eyes slide from the front to the sides of our heads. We're fucking omnivores. NATURE confirms this, yeah?

When we completely figure out how to simulate taste and eating for pleasure as we know it becomes outmoded.
