Resident Crybaby
I thought this would be a fun thread/poll to revisit after Marathon releases in March. ARC Raiders currently sits at an impressive 87 on OpenCritic:

Feels like the trajectory of interest in this game went from "unmitigated Concord level disaster" to "hey they might have something here" in pretty short order. I think reviews/early word of mouth are really going to dictate whether this one ends up finding an audience. I don't know that it'll be able to top ARC Raiders in reviews though; a multiplayer game scoring this high is quite rare. I think it'll review worse, but not that much worse. I'll guess 83.

No, because even it ends being the best game ever, as we already seen it will get shit from:
  • Xbox, Nintendo, PC fanboys hating whatever Sony does
  • Xbox fanboys who hate to see Bungie bought by Sony
  • PC fanboys who hate PlayStation
  • Bungie fanboys who hate to see Bungie working in something that isn't Destiny 2 or 3
  • Bungie fanboys who hate to see they sold the company to Sony
  • PlayStation fanboys who hate to see Sony releasing games (and day one) outside PS
  • PlayStation fanboys who hate to see Sony working on multiplayer games
  • PlayStation fanboys who hate to see Sony working on GaaS titles
Arc Raiders didn't have all that against it

Today we're also excited to announce the English-language voice cast of Marathon.

At launch, Marathon features the voices of...

Krizia Bajos, Samantha Béart, Beau Bridgland, Ry Chase, Roger Clark, Darin De Paul, Jennifer English, Dave Fennoy, Nika Futterman, Morla Gorrondona, Reina Guthrie, Donnla Hughes, Keston John, Sohm Kapila, Rich Keeble, Elliot Knight, Erica Lindbeck, Piotr Michael, Brent Mukai, Neil Newbon, Ariana Nicole George, Emily O'Brien, Lee Shorten, Jason Spisak, Ben Starr, JB Tadena, Fred Tatasciore, Craig Lee Thomas, Elias Toufexis, Oliver Vaquer, Scott Whyte, Tracy Wiles, Erin Yvette.
They dunking on Arc with this :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The journos will prolly give it points just for not using AI.

Gaming journalists don't evaluate a game by how good it is, but by how much it fits their political ideology.
You might as well toss a coin and have a more accurate way to know if a game is good or not.

The score really isn't that important in my opinion. What matters is how it's received by the community and the streamers. If that clicks or doesn't then it's basically irrelevant whether it's "Game Pass filler trash rated out of 100" aka around 80 or a 90+ score.

My main issue with Marathon is how it looks. Incredibly boring, dull, grey etc. With no pretty vista's or skyboxes. Then there's that weird fog everywhere. In terms of pure aesthetics it's one of the least inviting games I've ever seen. Shit's depressing as hell.

I'm all for 'it has to be fun before it looks pretty' but this might be the first case where the bad looks outweigh the rest to such an extent that I simply cannot stand to look at the game. Bummer too cause Destiny is gorgeous to look at.

I have not played Arc Raiders (yet) but at least it looks infinitely more appealing.

I don't think OP understands who actually made Arc Raiders. One of their founders Johan Andersson is basically the Swedish version of John Carmack.

These people basically built DICE and the Frostbite engine re-creating Battlefield for EA starting with Bad company games. These people know what they are doing.

Bungie does too though. The Final Shape sits at a 91 on OpenCritic. The Witch Queen sits at an 88. Destiny 2 itself sits at an 84. but then yes, several of their other expansions have reviewed poorly. That's why Marathon is so interesting to me; it's hard to predict how it will land

I think Marathon will review worse than Arc did. Except for at IGN, where it will review better than Arc did. 😂

I can't wait to play but this will review worse for a variety of reasons I believe.

-More obtuse and a lot for a player to learn on their own/discover. Journalists and modern players want yellow tape guided experiences.
-Hardcore game focused on PvP. Arc raiders is now a social sim with some shooting elements.
-Bungie level of support for micro transactions will likely not be like arc throwing free shit at you a ton. Plus if it hasn't improved from alpha testing the alternate skins and shit were very poor.
-Less maps on launch
-Starting off with a prior negative social stigma for initial reveal and also Bungie as a whole in players eyes

Does that mean it'll be the worse product? Fuck no. But the odds are stacked against it.

I'll say 81/100.

There's no escaping the bad press and people who refuse to change their minds because of the April test and art debacle. It'll never review better whether it IS better or not.

Sony tax? That's a first.

They typically get the most tax breaks in the industry.

You really think Marathon will move the GAAS needle even a little bit?
I can not overstate how important long-form progression is in PvP. Marathon is launching right as ARC Raiders opened everyone's eyes. It's launching in an undersaturated market. This game will do numbers.
It wont be nearly as successful as Arc Raiders
It's a shoe in to be the biggest new western IP of 2026.

It will be 70s since in todays age of "journalism" basically nothing high profile goes below that. The game is going to be a huge flop though. Not as bad as Concord, more like kill the justice league.

You sure are dialed in to what the fanboys are doing

At first I wanted to say wouldn't matter which game gets better score as long as you enjoy the game….

But I remembered these games are MP only games so it actually matters since these games can't function without other people playing the game.

There is no way this game does well.

Hijacking a beloved niche franchise and transform it into something that has nothing to do with, so the small fanbase will just never root for you, the stolen art and overall design, the now even hate that people has to Bungie (and rightfully imo) and the fact that people are just not interested in these kind of games.

Ofc I can be wrong, but I think their few players will try to hype this game, but then it will be even more forgotten than Redsec of BF6, and that game at least has other game modes that push sales. I dont think it will get to year 2 of the slave-service Bungie wants to build.

I think I'm more bullish on Marathon than a lot of people here, but 87 is an insanely good score for a live service game to get on launch. It'll be extremely hard for Marathon to clear that bar even if it's well received.

I want to say low 80s, because I think the game looks cool and I'm in the minority of GAFers who dig the aesthetic, but my gut says 78 or 79.

Your post has nothing to do with reviews.
Also, the bolded...how do you explain games like Helldivers 2?

All your points are bubbles that are meaningless in the end.

Judging by Steam numbers today it shows that the interest for it is definitely there. But there are still people that want to continue to drag it because of all the drama that came up surrounding it. Will it recover? It's too early to say. But I hope it does. Because I already feel like there's more going on here that's more interesting than anything in Concord.

I genuinely think it'll do well, I just think it's hard to tell where it will go against Arc Raiders. It depends on quite a lot that we're not even sure about yet, seeing the roadmap will be helpful when they release it.

I can't help but feel like the reception will be decent. If anything maybe around Arc Raiders if not slightly worse or better. It's just so hard to tell ATM.

But I definitely think people should give up the whole Concord thing, go give that to Highguard, lol.

Eh?

Your post is making my brain hurt.

If you enjoy a game im fairly certain you'd be able to find a few players out of the 8 billion folks on the planet to play with regardless of review score.
