Really impressive for Hitch, it should make over 45 mil for the weekend, and confirm Smith's status as an A list star.

1. Hitch - $14.5
2. Boogeyman - $3.2
3. Million Dollar Baby - $2
4. Are We There Yet? - $1.8
5. The Wedding Date - $1.6
6. Hide and Seek - $1.4
7. Pooh's Heffalump Mov $1.3
8. The Aviator - $1.3
9. Sideways - $1.2
10.Meet the Fockers - $0.9

As much as the movies referenced in this thread interest me, I'm kinda disappointed that there are no images of Will Smith like, angrily eating the face of a bear or something. :(

Eh, maybe. But a romantic comedy opening against nothing three days before Valentine's Day has a lot to do with it. At any rate, I think Will Smith is a pretty average actor that doesn't deserve his popularity (though he's been in some great movies).

average actor? i think he is amazing...but he never seems to take the challenging roles cept say ali. hell u could tell he was a amazing actor from some episodes of fresh prince where it required him to be dramatic and serious.

I think that was pretty clear already... anyway, he needs to take a smaller (as in smaller movie, I mean), more serious role, instead of playing the same wisecracking character that he seems to in every single movie.

Amazing? No. I think he has been amazing at times, but he's always... acting. Even when he's impressive, I find it impossible to think of the character without thinking of Will Smith. Great actors are more convincing.

And "pretty average" didn't actually mean average. Like... 40% average. :)

well he will forever remain the fresh prince.

and not only the episode where he bites the bullet...but that whole episode where his father comes...his acting...ill admit got me all mushy.

then there was that episode where he accidently slips carlton some drugs and when he confesses to the fam...damn good acting.

and he convinced me as ali.

Tom Cruse is considered a great actor and he plays pretty much the same character in every movie. He is no more convincing than Will Smith.

Uh, I thought the Oscar nod for Ali did that.

Smith's been an A list star for quite some time. Everything he touches (without the words Wild and West in it) turns to gold.

Hey, the cocky and funny's a given, but the traditional Tom Cruise role is one where he begins as a prissy good looking man child with lots to learn...and by the end of the movie, he does.

Add Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, and probably a few other movies to that list and we're set.

That episode was just on 2 days ago and it bugged me out. I've never seen a sitcom episode with such tremendous acting. I remember seeing the episode way back when and it hit me then, and to this day it fucks me up. The ending was just sad. =(

Will Smith was considered an A list star after his success with Independence Day, and MiB, but after that he had a string of pretty bad dissapointments. Wild Wild West underperformed, Bagger Vance did nothing, Ali while garnering criticla praise did not impress at the Box Office, and MiB 2 did alot less than the original. People were begining to doubt whether he was worth 20 mil a picture, but after Bad Boys 2, I Robot, [shark tale] and Hitch Smith has definately proved his worth.

If any of you are interested in the Box Office, there are some games at http://www.ez1productions.com which are a lot of fun to play. The main game just started 2 weeks ago, but you can still sign up now and practice for the Summer game.

me too. i got so excited when i first read the title.. then i realized it was referencing the movie box office. :(

:lol at the Tom Cruise analysis.

I look forward to seeing him as the cocky & funny human civilian fighting aliens in War of the Worlds.

I think Will Smith has been pretty much A-list since 1996 and Independence Day. The movie did make like a bajillion dollars.

"Hitch" I have to admit was a good idea for a movie and Will Smith is well cast in that role. I can see it having a long and very profitable run at the box office.

It struck a chord with me because almost the same situation happened between my older brother and my father. If anyone watched the Real World San Diego, the episode where jacquese's mother comes to visit, and he breaks down when he's talking about his father, it was alot like that with my father.

Don't even criticize anything Kubrick-related, mmm'kay? :lol

Will Smith WAS a good actor in my mind, but after the abominable defiguration of an intellectual property that was known as "I, Robot", and a reprint of the novel WITH SMITH ON THE COVER, and such funny things as vulgar jokes such as "atchoo, sorry, i'm allergic to bullshit" in something that has got so be somehow an Asimov subproduct, I don't ever think I will even like the guy again. :lol

Blame Akiva Goldsman for the shit in I, Robot. Not Will. Although Akiva tailored it to suit him, obviously. God what a fucking hack, and I cant believe he won an oscar. Shameful.

Well, Will accepted the role on his own will, didn't he? :lol
And just so you know, the original Script for I, Robot had NOTHING to do with Asimovs book. It was simply thrown in as to make use of the liscence afaik.

This shouldve been, by all accounts, a respectable Sci Fi movie by Alex Proyas, but turned out to be just another mindless yet highly enjoyable blockbuster actioner. Oh well.

Sorry for derailing :p

For what it's worth, I kind of just try to ignore "Eyes Wide Shut," "A.I.," and the last half of "Full Metal Jacket."

Dead, this of course I know. ;)

And Matlock:

Kubrick had no control over what was done after his death, so I don't feel ashamed as to not liking A.I. The last half of FMJ, well it's just because the first half was nearly the best thing ever shot on film, and it contrasted with it, but it's still much better than pretty much 90% of what other directors can put out. How many directors honestly can you think of that never made a huge blunder of a movie, that never were totally wrong, other than Kubrick? ;)

Eyes Wide Shut, you hate? I love Stanley Kubrick's movies when they are slow, I really like his style, on how no one is either black or white, everyone's gray, and this movie satisfied me the most. I was sure Barry Lyndon would be a borefest (I usually loathe these long-ass history flicks), but it turned out to be pure genius once again. Really intriculately put out.

If you did find Eyes Wide Shut boring and you do like Kubrick, was it because it lacked some nookie, or because of the censorship for the American version? ;)

God, I just forgot that even if I did not liked Ali that much, it was directed by none other than Michael Mann. I am now obligated to like Smith again even with his wisecraking mixed with an Asimov I.P :lol
