with the recent dismal ratings at the academy awards i wouldn’t be surprised if this was all a pre planned publicity stunt. these are all actors after all, their existence is to sell fake goods.

With all the articles coming out it sure seems legit. But I will think there's probability it's fake.

Oscar ratings have dropped so much it's impossible to believe how far they have. And with Will and Jada's home life being a laugh and a half, I wouldnt doubt those two doing something dumb to improve their image. Will Smith is manly defender and Jada Pinkett gets some pity PR as her career (going by wiki) has been basically non-existent for 20 years.

Hollywood loves nothing more than feeling like holy vessels to communicate sociopolitical issues they (1) largely don't understand; and because of that (2) are often wrong about. And from what I've heard, they did a lot of their usual preaching (and talking down to "regular" people) last night.

In one fell swoop, Will Smith nullified ALL of that. Everything about Ukraine, about Florida's bill, about payment gap.... All of that got wiped, with a single slap. Now the only thing that people are talking about is the slap, and nothing else that happened at the Oscars. I don't think Hollywood would purposely plan to cancel its own message.

The idea that you’re going to parade around talking about how your wife fucks other dudes that she goes in dates in public with, and yet you can’t handle a mild joke like that is pathetic.

And for these same assholes who like to lecture all of us about our supposed privilege, we just got a peek at real privilege last night. Because none of us would even be allowed in that room. If we somehow did manage to get in, we certainly wouldn’t be able to get close to the stage. Then he got an award and congratulated himself for defending his family and loving everyone and being a role model, essentially.

I don't have a strong opinion about whether or not the slap was fake. I think it at least some component was planned, but I wouldn't be surprised by anything.

More broadly, "Hollywood" not even the Academy Awards are a monolith. A few actors (pun intended) can decide to pull a stunt and just not tell all the self righteous people about it. You're point is taken about this incident nullifying the impact of the social scolding, but I don't think it's compelling in terms of the real\fake debate.

MY TAKE:
Rock was insensitive in his joke, though the joke itself was relatively benign. As a comedian he perpetually makes himself vulnerable to his audience but this takes the cake.

Pinket Smith is obviously still vulnerable about her condition and I'm sorry she felt bad twice: once at Rock highlighting it and then again at her husband laughing.

Will Smith is a very small and insecure man and he lacks class. His reaction and inability to apologise to Rock shows how weak and fragile he is. And to top it all off his son tweets kudos and appreciation for his Dad's behaviour after the event.

And then he gets a standing ovation. Hollywood has no moral compass and the sham is there for all to see in case you've missed it before.

Will had tears in his eyes when he was heckling Chris in rage. If that's supposed to be acting it's better acting than he's ever performed on screen. Chris had no idea that slap was coming and didn't flinch at all. The slap was intense, too, more like a strike, Will had his off hand guarding like you do in striking training. It's not what you'd do to make a spectacle of a slap. As Gobbie says, Will was also completely unhinged in his acceptance speech shortly thereafter.
