Will Switch 1 Dethrone PS2 sales?

The price increases won't help but I think price of the Switch 2 is still far enough away and the fact that many games are still releasing on Switch 1 may move another 5-10M units by the end of it.
It depends how much longer Nintendo wants to continue shipping Switch 1 units.

In a way, it's counterproductive to them selling Switch 2 ones.

They (Nintendo) want the Switch 2 to sell as much as it can.

based on the last Direct, I am not so sure.

They seem to be focusing on continuing to sell Switch 1 stuff to the detriment of Switch 2 goodies.

The install base of Switch 1 is gonna make a fast transition to Switch 2 exclusives very hard. Could be a loooong cross gen period.

What about that post is not real?

Maybe you weren't around for anything mentioned in it.

Everything is wrong about it. Im 43 and worked in a video games store for like 10 years. Management. I've seen it all. Youre talking fanboy drivel.
They never Switch, as long as the Switch 2 price is what it is.

Nintendo fans tend to be budget games.

And there's nothing wrong with that

I mean there will be a tipping point. It's just matter of when. Could be many years though.

Problem for Nintendo is they do a lot of porting and pretty much all of that can run on Switch 1.

You're telling me gaming was socially acceptable in the 80s/90s?

Honestly, it wasn't until the PS1 where this started changing.

My point is, the Switch 1 benefits from a world where gaming is mainstream.

There are literally millions more gamers today, than back then for a multitude of reasons.

Nintendo is going to run a situation where many users are contempt, with what they have.

You'll be surprised by how many casual gamers who own a Switch 1 express they zero intent on upgrading.

Only the hardcore (smaller group) are running out to grab them.

Yes.
But as soon as it does, Sony will suddenly "remember" that they forgot to count about 10 million units.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's how they report their PS5 sales as well.

I don't think so. Especially because I believe we aren't dealing with comparable metrics here.

So, even if it does, it's meaningless. I will always disregard it.

Nintendo games never drop in price. You never hear Nintendo fans state they'll wait for a deep discount before buying a game, so how are they "budget" gamers?

Which is it 🤔

Out of 160m ps2 units, about 50m were sold when ps3 was already avaiable, and those units were sold at 200usd, 150 and later even 99usd.
Switch definitely had potential to beat ps2 in sales but due to nintendo not lowerings its price but actually increasing, there is very slim chance its doable, not gonna say 0 but close to 0.

Official ps2 sales data, by year:

As long as they keep it in production and support it they definitely will.

It'll be at 156.62m by March 31st 2026. We know they'll support it with first party software through 2026 as well. So unless sales drop to zero they'll blast past it by March 31st 2028.

Irrespectively of the final sale number, the switch is already the most successful console of all times and it's not really close. It never had a price drop (arguably a price increase with the OLED), and sold a staggering amount of games.

The PS2, for as great as it was, was practically given in happy meals towards the end of its life.

They are budget gamers since historically, Nintendo consoles have been on the cheaper side.

It's only with the Switch 2 where the price differential isn't that big, compared to the much stronger options (technically) with the PS or Xbox.

So the ps2 number is irrelevant because there were millions more gamers in the ps2 era than there was in the Atari 2600 era or nes era. The ps2 with 13 years of sales and much larger audience than those older consoles is not impressive at all then by your logic.

The caveat here is that, the Switch doubles as a handheld.

Would the Switch have sold as well as it has, if it was a traditional home console?

The PS1 expanded the market significantly, and one generation later a record that hasn't been broken was set by the PS2.

Remember, the general culture of gaming industry hadn't changed much between the PS1 and PS2.

Gaming was definitely more of a hardcore, and nerdier thing to do.

Really, after the PS360ii in alignment with the Internet and smartphone boom taking off things REALLY expanded in the gaming market.

PS2's achievement occured in much much smaller and limited market.

Switch sales are impressive, but when you factor in the world of today.

It's not that impressive.

Hell, consoles should have surpassed PS2 sales long ago.

Can you explain to me why (in a world where gaming is more mainstream) PlayStation consistently fails to ever come close to their PS2 sales for their new systems? According to you, PS2 sold in a world where gaming was for nerds but now that gaming is for every one, Sony can't come anywhere close to their 20 year old niche industry nerd box.

The caveat here is that, the Switch doubles as a handheld.

Would the Switch have sold as well as it has, if it was a traditional home console?
Would the PS2 have some as well as it did if it wasn't a dvd player?

Do you not realize that every knock or discredit you try to apply to the Switch can also be applied to the PS2? Or are you gonna keep plugging your ears and live in fantasy land?

That fact that you say this proves it's not true that Switch (or any primary gaming focused system) reaching that milestone is not as impressive.

Gaming has never been more diluted between platforms and options as today. Back then dedicated consoles/handhelds were the only thing you could go for if you wanted to play video games. Today you can play the latest AAA Resident Evil on your phone.

Sure, PlayStation fails to come close to their PS2 sales because everything is multipat.

Most of the best games on PS2 (first or third party), were ONLY on PS2.

Even when the games were not exclusive to PS2, those games were usually developed with the PS2 first in mind.

With the PS4/PS5 literally every game outside of first party exclusives were available elsewhere.

If they had more games like Bloodbourne quality, which could only be played on a PlayStation maybe this would be different.

Now today, Sony's first party games can be had elsewhere too, within months.

You omitted one crucial point: it didn't have any competition.
- the Dreamcast was dead on arival
- the GameCube came too late with a proprietary format that would limit 3rd party games
- the Xbox was too new to be ready for mass public appeal

The Switch had to face fierce competition from the PS4 (when it launched it costed as much or even slighlty more than a PS4 and an Xbox One, with 0 back catalog to count on, and a historical flop from the previous console)

The Dreamcast was not dead on arrival...

The system broke sales records at launch.

The GameCube and Xbox were competition, but Sony had strong momentum coming in from the PS1 that they rode with the PS2.

The masses loved the PS1, and Sony generated crazy hype with the PS2 being a giant evolution forward.

I'm going to get hate for this but, N64 and Saturn didn't have much good will with consumers.

There's a reason Sony came in to the game industry AFTER Sega and Nintendo and won on their first try with the PS1.

Many said they would rather wait to see what Sony has up in their sleeve, than buy a Dreamcast.

This is why the Dreamcast failed, Sega burned bridges.

Nintendo wise, launching the GameCube with purple as the main color was a bad choice.

Gaming was growing up.

Teens - Adults bought the PS2, as it looked cool and was seen as the edgier must have.

Basically, gamers from the 80s - 90s "grew up" and bought a PS2.

Same thing applies to PS1.

Xbox as you mentioned, was the new kid on the block so it's chances of winning against an already consumer favored PS2 was low.

The Switch had the handheld market to itself, there wasn't any competition.

Fast forward to today, the Steam Deck and many more alternatives exist.

The Switch 2 won't enjoy having the market to itself, this time.

This will result in lower sales.

Okay, I want to just tackle the bullcrap you throw at Switch due to its "covid boost" and the grace you give PS2 for its DVD aspect not contributing greatly to its overall sales numbers. I went to wikipedia and compiled a list of the best selling 15 games for ps2, ps4, and switch (I am bored and still a little geeked form last night so, yea). I put the data in spoiler tags as to not flood the flow of the discussion.

Long story short, if you look at PS2's console sales verses its software sales and compare it to PS4 and Switch's console/software sales you notice something VERY obvious to anyone that isn't you because you will fail to see this for sure. Look at the best selling PS2 game and see how much the sales drop off as you work your way down the list. This does not scream "people bought ps2 because of the games" like you claim. If anything, this screams "people bought PS2 despite of its games, people bought ps2 to watch movies and play some games sometimes as well." To me, this is irrefutable but I greatly look forward to how you justify this. Something something nerd culture something something gaming wasn't popular.

Bonus tidbit. Animal Crossing new horizons sold 31m at the end of 2021 (well past the lockdowns ended) and it managed to sell another 18 million after that. So I think your covid excuse for Switch is just ridiculous. The single game that drove sales during covid continued to sell insanely well post covid. Hell, New Horizons sold more post covid than even the best selling PS2 game sold overall.

I guess you missed how Switch 2 completely destroyed (nearly doubled) the launch console sale records and is still selling extremely well three months out?

The PS2 and its offspring were also produced for the longest time (till 2013). So i'd say Nintendo needs to produce the Switch till 2030 to get even. And then they surely will get there.

What also didn't help is that the PS2 hardware was rather a success in arcades. Obviously, i don't know if those numbers are also included, and it was different times, but it all adds up. Plus that the PS2 hardware, hugely expensive at launch, costed not a lot at the end of it.

Nintendo clearly keeps the Switch visible, so i would imagine they would make it an entry-level system for games. Sell it for 150 to 200 bucks, get a few millions more. And by 2027, sell it for 130.

Gaming is a bigger market now than when the PS2 released. It's 10 times bigger now than back then, according to ChatGPT. A part of the reason why it's so big now was because of the impact the PS2 made.

Always find these threads a bit nonsensical. But the answer to this thread, yes it should do and no reason why it shouldn't.

Yes, gaming is much bigger now than in the PS2 days.

It took for a hybrid to come close to the sales of a console in a 10x less market.

Doesn't that forever GOAT the PS2?

Switch is a hybrid that leans more to the handheld side.
It is no more a home console than the PSP. Nintendo stans just do not understand that the Wii U was Nintendo's last console.

It'll have outsold it by March next year, even if they miss their estimates by a large margin.
Doubt it, Nintendo consoles don't sell well after the next one releases.

The Switch 1 is dead.

It'll still get games but, nobody that doesn't already have one is going to get one, at this point.

It's entirely up to Nintendo, and I'm sure Sony recognizes this fact.

So in that sense, the message is clear. If Nintendo wanted to, they could create the necessary conditions for Switch to outsell PS2, no doubt about it.

Design a cheaper model, advertise it for kids, launch a few special colors and/or bundles with Pokemon or Mario alongside the movie. Easy. If they're not doing it it's only because they don't see the importance of selling more systems.
Nintendo are trying to run a business not a fanboy war. Likewise Sony could have sold more PS2 if they wanted.

Define "well". It doesn't need to sell the regular 10-20M/year to beat DS nor Ps2, it just needs to push 2-3M a year and it'll get there.

The 3DS sold 10M post the launch of the Switch over time, for example.

Well as in, the millions more needed to beat the PS2.

The 3DS selling more post launch happened because it was cheaper than the Switch, and much different kind of beast than it.

Switch 1 and Switch 2 are basically the same, with the latter being the upgraded version of it.

Why buy the Switch 1 when the Switch 2 can play, nearly every Switch 1 game?

Because the PS2 could be had for $99 while the PS3 price was $599.

3rd world countries loved the PS2 due do that lower level entry price, compared to the PS3.

Switch 1 and Switch 2 don't share this level of a price difference.

Okay, DS did roughly the same post 3DS going from 144 in 2011 to 154 by 2016.
