The DS was cheap by the time 3DS was out.Okay, DS did roughly the same post 3DS going from 144 in 2011 to 154 by 2016.
The difference with the Switch 1 and Switch 2, is the the former is NOT much cheaper.

Only very early on, they slashed the 3DS price shortly after launch. The DS was cheap by the time 3DS was out.

The caveat here is that, the Switch doubles as a handheld.
Would the Switch have sold as well as it has, if it was a traditional home console?
Doubtful. Nintendo estimates to ship 4.5M units of Switch (1) through the entirety of FY25/26 (ending March 2026).It will sell 5 million this holiday season
You are correct, but Switch 1 and Switch 2 share a big price difference that still makes Switch 1 relevant enough to sell the 7 million systems it needs to overtake PS2. Do you not see the massive hypocrisy in your double standards?Because the PS2 could be had for $99 while the PS3 price was $599.
3rd world countries loved the PS2 due do that lower level entry price, compared to the PS3.
Switch 1 and Switch 2 don't share this level of a price difference.
They have Switch 1 games announced for 2026. That guarantees relevancy and at least 3 million units for the entire year. All Switch 1 needs to sell to overtake PS2 is 6 million units as of right now. Do you really think with this holiday period where a new Pokemon game is dropping and the entirety of 2026 where it's still being supported heavily that it won't sell at least 6 million in that 15 month time frame? If Nintendo cut the price and had a long crossgen period, it would have happened. But the signs are that they won't cut the price and the cross gen period will be short.
That was my point.Nintendo are trying to run a business not a fanboy war. Likewise Sony could have sold more PS2 if they wanted.
Not sure this is relevant........... But please continue. Not really the point as people would have seen the cheap DVD player as a great reason to get one. As well as playing games of course.its a fair point but in my 40 years of life a never saw a person using a PS2 as a DVD player, not once.
What kind of biased bullshit mentions covid but not cheap DVD player? Seriously intellectual dishonesty in the name of bullshit fanboy loyalty. From Nintendo's Official Website
"As of June 30, 2025, the Nintendo Switch has sold 153.10 million units worldwide."

The Switch 1 had the benefit of the covid boost inflating it's numbers, in addition to being a handheld.
I knew countless people who purchased one because they needed something to do, during the lockdowns.
Mind you, these people had zero interest in games and haven't touched their Switch's in years, post-covid.
Switch 1 sales have come to a sharp halt these last few years, and it's barely moving units now that the Switch 2 is out.
PS2 will remain the highest selling home console for the foreseeable future, and possibly ever...

This piece of trash portable has not even outsold the Nintendo DS. It possibly never will.
You're not wrong about the NDS.. But do you really think it would have had the same success if it wasn't portable? Rhetorical question. Hell no it wouldn't have. PS2 was stationary and still made the numbers.I wouldn't call it trigger defensiveness when I am responding to completely idiotic takes. No one claimed NDS outsold PS2. I was correcting your horrible take about Switch only being successful because it piggybacks off of mobile gaming success, which is a ridiculous thing to say considering Nintendo had a massively successfully handheld system before the mobile/ipad gaming revolution even began.
Yet you believe NintendosGiven the PS2's 17 year head start and the fact that the Switch is already closing in, I think yes it will, eventually. Regardless, I don't believe Playstation's fake numbers.
Gigabowser trying to throw off the scent by being a delusional Sony fanboy?Pretty sure op is a puppet account, the way he writes totally reminds me of someone. I just can't put my finger on whose alt he is
Ps2 did that before mobile gaming became a thing, which is now the largest market segment
Nintendo is much more impressive that they could get those numbers when mobile gaming is the most popular way to game and even PC gaming is more popular than it was
If you don't believe me, look up market share for mobile gaming versus consoles
Switch was also much more expensive, again making the feat more impressive. Not to mention ps2 was a dvd player, which is a huge reason it sold that well
However you try to spin it, the switch numbers are way more impressive.
Yeah that small thing called covid am i right? The one time we spent close to a year and half stuck at home (the entire damn world) and the only console available was the Switch...i'm sure that's much smaller than "cheaper dvd player" lmaoWhat kind of biased bullshit mentions covid but not cheap DVD player? Seriously intellectual dishonesty in the name of bullshit fanboy loyalty.
Is he still banned? Hey I could be wrong this thread is just giving me Deja vuGigabiw
Gigabowser trying to throw off the scent by being a delusional Sony fanboy?
Sweet Tooth. LolPretty sure op is a puppet account, the way he writes totally reminds me of someone. I just can't put my finger on whose alt he is
The PS2 did it at a time when the gaming market was much smaller than it is today.
The Switch is also a mobile/portable device which helps a lot in todays market.
You're talking complete drivel. You're telling me gaming was socially acceptable in the 80s/90s?
Honestly, it wasn't until the PS1 where this started changing.
My point is, the Switch 1 benefits from a world where gaming is mainstream.
There are literally millions more gamers today, than back then for a multitude of reasons.
You think Switch sold over 105 million during lockdown? That's completely delusional. You know how many literally bought a Switch because they were bored during lockdowns?
Easily, 70% of it's total sales.
Easily
Side note: The Switch is a handheld.
But why does that matter? These consoles were designed for their specific use cases. DS would have sold fewer units if it wasn't a portable console, and the PS2 would have sold fewer units if it wasn't a home console. You're not wrong about the NDS.. But do you really think it would have had the same success if it wasn't portable? Rhetorical question. Hell no it wouldn't have. PS2 was stationary and still made the numbers.
They have two Switch games for 2026 but both were announced in March. Since the Switch 2 Direct in April, every new first party game announced has been Switch 2 only.
Nintendo still hasn't pushed the "deploy gb/gba pokemon games on NSO and bundle them with a Switch Lite" button like they did for 3DS in 2016.
You know how many literally bought a Switch because they were bored during lockdowns?
Easily, 70% of it's total sales.
Easily
Side note: The Switch is a handheld.
DQ7 is coming to Switch 1 and that will be a massive seller. It will push Switch 1 (albeit not much) and Switch 2 hardware. You think Switch sold over 105 million during lockdown? That's completely delusional.
But why does that matter? These consoles were designed for their specific use cases. DS would have sold fewer units if it wasn't a portable console, and the PS2 would have sold fewer units if it wasn't a home console.
They have two Switch games for 2026 but both were announced in March. Since the Switch 2 Direct in April, every new first party game announced has been Switch 2 only.
That can change of course, but when even Mario Tennis and 2D Yoshi are current gen only, that doesn't indicate to me that Switch will get heavy support from Nintendo after this holiday season. Maybe remakes and remasters like Galaxy.
If Nintendo and third parties announce major new games for 2026 then I think Switch will pass PS2. But if that doesn't happen and we don't see bundles or a price cut, I see Switch sales slowing down a lot.
According to Nintendo's forecast, Switch should sell 4.5 million this fiscal year and be at 156.5 million by the end of March. It would then need to sell another 4 million in the other 9 months to cross PS2 by the end of 2026.DQ7 is coming to Switch 1 and that will be a massive seller. It will push Switch 1 (albeit not much) and Switch 2 hardware.
I get what you're saying, but some are also completely underestimating actually how close Switch is to passing PS2. As of June 30th it was at 153m and we already know it sold an additional 180k units in Japan alone the last two months. This holiday Switch 1 has Pokemon Legends ZA, Mario Galaxy, Dragon Quest 1+2, and Metroid Prime as heavy hitters that will attract some consumers to its cheaper price point with how bad the economy is.
To pretend Switch 1 can't irk out 7m more sales by the end of 2026 given it's cheaper price, continued software support, and still cultural relevance is just grasping at straws to try to pretend PS2 is untouchable.
True but they are massively low balling their sales targets for Switch 1. Depending on what they do this holiday, it will be telling how much Nintendo feels like pushing Switch 1. There are some extremely attractive bundles they can do to sell systems. Switch Lite with Pokemon is an easy pusher (but I doubt they will do that because Switch 2 already has a ZA bundle).According to Nintendo's forecast, Switch should sell 4.5 million this fiscal year and be at 156.5 million by the end of March. It would then need to sell another 4 million in the other 9 months to cross PS2 by the end of 2026.
Without strong software support, I would expect sales to continue declining in 2026, so getting 4 million sales in those 9 months would be tricky.
Switch probably would have ended up somewhere between 70 - 90 million, if it wasn't portable. You're not wrong about the NDS.. But do you really think it would have had the same success if it wasn't portable? Rhetorical question. Hell no it wouldn't have. PS2 was stationary and still made the numbers.
It had way more variety, and all the major third party games across many genres during this time of peak relevancy.Yet you believe Nintendos
Regardless PS2 had the greatest library of games ever, that is a indisputable fact and the only metric that honestly matters.
Switch probably would have ended up somewhere between 70 - 90 million, if it wasn't portable.
That figure might be too optimistic though.

and those games sold very poorly in relation to how many systems they sold. I provided the data. You're ignoring it.It had way more variety, and all the major third party games across many genres during this time of peak relevancy.
Literally, the only draw to the Switch are Nintendo games like Pokemon, AC, Mario Kart, and so.on.
That's it.
Nintendo fanboys are struggling to grasp this. The PS2 did it at a time when the gaming market was much smaller than it is today.
The Switch is also a mobile/portable device which helps a lot in todays market.
A massive seller in Japan, maybe, but it isn't moving a sit impossible number of Switch consoles otherwise.DQ7 is coming to Switch 1 and that will be a massive seller. It will push Switch 1 (albeit not much) and Switch 2 hardware.
And you fail to grasp that the PS2 was sold for $100 for years and took 13 years to reach 160M. We can all make excuses.Nintendo fanboys are struggling to grasp this.
Yeah that small thing called covid am i right? The one time we spent close to a year and half stuck at home (the entire damn world) and the only console available was the Switch...i'm sure that's much smaller than "cheaper dvd player" lmao
Plus the gaming industry is much bigger now, there's more people in the world, the switch is a damn hybrid console attracting 2 different types of audiences, there's also a switch edition that's only portable available and has sold like 25M consoles as well adding to this number , etc...and still i don't think Switch will get to the PS5.
But sure "cheaper dvd player".
No it wasn't.You're talking complete drivel.
Gaming was hugely popular through the Atari and Amiga.
NES was the breakout console.
If we play that game of "what if the Switch was $150", then we would have to agree to slash all Switch sales by whatever the Lite units sold were. And you fail to grasp that the PS2 was sold for $100 for years and took 13 years to reach 160M. We can all make excuses.
Imagine how many units the Switch would have moved if Nintendo sold it for $150.
Oh I agree, but we are literally talking about a console (albeit old and already replaced but still economically viable) only needing to sell 6 million units in 18 months while it is still being supported with a dozen (that we know of for now) great games. I think it's obvious people are being overly negative on the Switch's ability to push those types of sales when we are literally comparing it to a system that sold 40million units after its replacement hit the shelves. And you fail to grasp that the PS2 was sold for $100 for years and took 13 years to reach 160M. We can all make excuses.
Imagine how many units the Switch would have moved if Nintendo sold it for $150.
I love how you completely gloss over the PS2 being sold for pennies for 4 years and taking 13 years to achieve that final sales number. If we play that game of "what if the Switch was $150", then we would have to agree to slash all Switch sales by whatever the Lite units sold were.
I'm being generous to allow the Lite which is 100% a portable, to be factored into the total Switch sales.
Also S Scrawnton , I'll have a response for that post you mentioned in a bit.
The Switch is a glorified android tablet that everyone is copying including Sony with the PS6.Since this thread seems to be a pissing contest, I'll just throw in my two cents.
The switch is cool, but the PS2 is unironically the GOAT. The jump in fidelity and tech was mind shattering at the time.
The switch is a glorified android tablet with really good games on it.
Blah blah something about numbers.
Nintendo fanboys right now...Since this thread seems to be a pissing contest, I'll just throw in my two cents.

They are copying it because it seems the market might be headed in that direction. The Switch is a glorified android tablet that everyone is copying including Sony with the PS6.
When you can't tell where the honesty ends, and the sarcasm begins, yes, its time to bow out.I can see the thread is turning into a brain rot circle jerk. This is where I bow out. It was fun.
