I've been thinking about this and I don't think I'm going to pay the upgrade prices.
I had fun with my Switch 1 games on the Switch but I'm ready to move on to Switch 2 anyway so I'll just focus on the new games instead of replaying the older ones. If I want to replay an old one then it will still work fine and I'll get the same experience I got on the original Switch, just with faster loading.

OP, can you update the poll so that we can change our minds later if we want?

Nevermind the corporation, I'm genuinely curious about the morality element.

How is it morally correct, "the only morally correct answer" no less, to steal luxury non-essentials just because you disagree with the price?

How is it "Morally" correct?

Only on the few exclusives titles I own that I might replay (fewer still), and only after seeing proof of how good the upgrade is.

Nope. The only ones I'm interested in playing an upgraded version of are TOTK and XCX. TOTK upgrade is included if you have an NSO + expansion pack.

The idea of having to pay to upgrade your games sounds completely alien to me. There are other ways to go around playing those games at 4K/60fps, and I think I'll take adventage of those instead.

How is it morally correct?

If you don't like the price of something then you don't buy it. You go without said thing because you either can't afford it or disagree with the price.

But you're not entitled to steal something just because you disagree with the price - that's actually immoral and nothing more than sorely misplaced entitlement. I mean you can make a moral argument for stealing essentials or for survival but videogames are luxury non-essentials.

It's $20 now? Id expect some pretty solid changes for that. Not just a new coat of paint.

Nintendo really seems to have burnt through a lot of good will after yesterday.

Morality is subjective, it varies from nation to nation, group to group and even individual to individual.

"Moralities are sets of self-perpetuating and biologically driven behaviors which encourage human cooperation. Biologists contend that all social animals, from ants to elephants, have modified their behaviors, by restraining immediate selfishness in order to improve their evolutionary fitness. Human morality, although sophisticated and complex relative to the moralities of other animals, is essentially a natural phenomenon that evolved to restrict excessive individualism that could undermine a group's cohesion and thereby reducing the individuals' fitness."

Therefore different groups have different morals, therefore there is no universal code of morality (a very small amount of things are universal like not killing your family members etc). So when you make an appeal to morality you're essentially making an appeal to opinion, because others may not follow you or your groups moral code. So the vast majority of things are morally correct.

I will again subscribe for online+expansion so some upgrades will be free. I have about 8-9 games that I have not finished/some even not started, so if the upgrades are not free for some of them, but are avaiable i will probably upgrade (Bayo 3 and Zelda TOTK are some of the games I would like to play with improved resolution).

Yes I would for games that mean a lot to me. I was ready to do it for both Zeldas but they already offer it for free if you have NSO+EP and since I do, it's a nice plus for me. I'm not gonna do it for Jamboree though.

Yes, depending on the game.

I would have easily paid the price for BOTW/TOTK but those are free with Online. I think I would pay for a Pikmin upgrade as well.

I will, for the games I have in my backlog, I won't pay for BOTW or TOTK cause I played this for 200 hrs each, I have nothing else to do in them.

There should be a "depends" option tbh.

Some games I won't care to and you already get BOTW/TotK for free if you're a switch online member.

I'm hoping more games will be free with Nintendo online.

Games I'd pay $10 for? Xeno titles.

Games I'd pay $20? Only Zelda totk.

But I'm just going Nintendo online route. Completing totk within a month then cancelling. I assume that's cheaper.

Sigh...

This is irrelevant, at least with respect to first parties. IT ISN'T HAPPENING. Or at least has not been stated to be happening.

Nintendo announced four games to have paid upgrades for Switch 2 versions. Mario Party and Kirby have significant additional content added (new mini games for Mario Party, new campaign for Kirby). This is legitimate DLC. If you are outrageously outraged about needing to pay for legitimate new content, but only applying it to Nintendo and Nintendo only, then you are a hypocrite.

The other two games (Zelda) are definitely more arguable, but they are getting new features. There's new pseudo story content, new sharing, etc. Is it worth a DLC alone? I personally don't think so, but at least it is other new features.

Meanwhile, Nintendo has announced that eleven Switch games would be getting free updates, either to "improve performance or add support for features such as GameShare" (their words). Some are obviously for new features, like Clubhouse Games. But some are almost certainly for improved performance, namely Pokemon Scarlet/Violet and Link's Awakening.

It remains to be seen what will happen in the future. But as of right now, there is not a single Nintendo first party game that has been announced to require payment to get enhanced visuals. Perhaps we should leave the outrage until it happens?

Now, I don't know what's going on with Civ VII or Hogwarts, if they'll make you pay for an upgrade. But given that they needed to do special builds of those just for the Switch, I assume these new versions are significantly added effort. Besides, third parties do their own thing.

You aren't being entirely honest here. Yes, Nintendo added minor stuff like "Zelda Notes" to the Switch 2 versions of Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom, but that's just an attempt at a value add. The actual sell of the Switch 2 version is the upgraded visuals.

I mean this is straight from Nintendo's website:

Clearly the focus is on the upgraded visuals/faster performance/faster load times.

Moving forward, I'm sure that A.) Nintendo is going to keep trickling more Switch 2 enhanced games out over the years and charge to upgrade them and that B.) they'll continue to throw in little bonuses to further incentivize the purchase, but in reality the primary reason people will be buying these versions if for the visual upgrades.

I did not vote right away but after giving it some thought my answer is no. I am not going to do it. I am leaning toward not even getting the Switch 2 unless FOMO gets to me.

For the last few generations Nintendo has been a secondary console for me and with handheld PC systems and the rumors of the Xbox portable, I feel like I am going to have a lot of secondary gaming options. Too many. I still have several Switch games I held off on playing waiting for this announcement but I think I am going to slowly finish those up on my current Switch and then toss it in the storage closet of misfit video game consoles.

This might be the first console launch I have skipped in as long as I can remember. It might even be the only one I have skipped since my parents stopped buying my consoles when I was a child. It's not that I cannot afford it. Duh, since I will buy something else. I just don't think I want it. I didn't play my current Switch all that much, my daughter and granddaughter have both checked out on Nintendo (:messenger_sad_relieved:) and Nintendo is being a dick. I'm just not excited about this one.

I will if there's a game I want to upgrade that I want to play. I'm not sure there is though since Xenoblade Chronicles isn't on the list and I have the premium Nintendo online for the 2 Zelda's

These games are playable on the Switch 2 with no cost.

But, if the upgrades are impressive then $10 MAX!!!

Don't be fucking greedy Nintendo. Don't be a Sony. MS at least has Smart Delivery and no upgrade fee.

What are you on about, SONY doesnt have more than $10 upgrade for any of their games. Their controllers cost $20 cheaper, their $500 gives 1TB SSD and not 256GB. Their games are $70 not $90. Nintendo is delusional if they think they can charge $20 for minor upgrade mostly in resolution.

I'll wait for the final price in my region before I decide. If it is in fact the equivalence of $10, absolutely. It won't be though so we'll see.

nah mainly because I don't want to replay the games I just played. I want to play new games. or really old games like the GC games that I haven't played in ages. EVen those...for the most part I'll probably just dabble in them.

mario party dlc different story. I might buy that. A bonus would be showing off the frame and res increase to friends around town.

Nah, that's wrong. But it would be a huge derailment to explain it here in detail, so I'd better don't even start.
Nope you're objectively wrong and I explained why. I also linked what the experts say as well explaining how animals evolved to develop morality. Many people have an issue with this because it breaks their world view and challenges their ideals, they think their morals are "THE morals" and then proceed to make appeals to morality as if their morals are some sort of authoritative code of ethics.

But think of it this way. Just because the christian bible says being gay is immoral doesn't mean everyone's personal moral code contains this belief. Just because the Quran says anal sex is immoral doesn't mean everyone thinks it is. Just because environmentalists think deforestation is immoral doesn't mean everyone thinks it is. Just because some Americans believed not getting vaccinated was immoral doesn't mean everyone thought it was. Different people like and dislike different things, it is simply nature.

If I ever buy a Switch 2, which I'm sure I will at some point, I'll have to determine it on a case by case basis. I'm not opposed to paying an upgrade fee, I just have to see if an upgrade is worth of paying for.

Only for those games I'd like to play again or for the first time. Haven't played Zelda nor Xenoblade so I'd pay for those (and Zelda got them for free anyways). For dungeon crawlers yeah, I'd too. But for Mario nah, haven't enjoyed a single Mario since Yoshi's Island.

I'm changing my stance - it's going to be on a case by case basis.
Kirby has me wanting the upgrade and they also said it will be cheaper if you already own the Switch 1 edition.
I can't change my vote in the poll though.

I will pay as long as decent amount of work have been put into these version. A plain 60fps patch only shouldn't cost a dime to the customer in my opinion. We've seen it on multiple occasion on Series x/s. Performance mode for free and that's fucking awesome.

If there are tweaks to the graphic, better this and better that, now it's another story, it's worth something. But it's always pleasing when we're given freebies , a good gesture is always well received but I guess that's not how corporates function.

I'm going to buy Switch 2 but I've never had the Switch, I'm interested in getting Zelda: BotW and TotK right away, how much do you think they'll cost in the updated versions to S2?

If it's included in my NSO subscription, no need for of course.

The only upgrade I paid so far was for Ragnarök and its 120fps mode, which was actually a 88-92 fps mode, but still.

Is it just me, or should FPS and resolution upgrades be free for all backwards compatible games? Buying a Switch 2 basically means you're paying for better performance on older titles. That's like Nvidia selling me a $699 GPU, then charging $19.99 per game just to unlock higher frame rates and resolutions for last-gen PC games.

I'm like,

Think only game I own that will be eligible is Breath of the Wild, and I'll probably buy the upgrade since I haven't gotten around to playing yet, so the enhanced experience will be my first go.

I don't really have any desire to replay those games with just some better visuals/framerate. Rather spend my time playing new games.
