How many instances of winamp is it OK to run at once? I have a good-ish computer (512MB, Athlon 4-3400). Its for converting wmas to mp3 so I can stick them on an ipod, so I don't even know if its time critical -ie if its slow will it still get the job done?

I'm trying two at the moment to halve the time it takes. Should that be a no-brainer?

I'm always concerned about the time-critical nature of stuff, like never browsing while burning CDs. I guess I'm still stuck in the '90s...

Depends on RAM, and of course each instance of WA will take up a certain amount of the CPU, so the only thing you're gaining by running multiple instances is not having to stay by the computer as it encodes to setup the next transcode. There's a chance your computer will crash or lockup when encoding too many things at once. i've encountered it when encoding FLACs. My current limit is five, although it's locked up with less.

i think you may be better off with dBPoweramp. i don't think it handles WMA by default, but it may transcode to MP3 via plugins. Note that you'll need to get the LAME plugin as well.
