Windows 10 |OT| Something Happened? Something Happened.

Geez this system is getting on my nerves. Each time I go idle for a few minutes some maintenance begins and the CPU temp skyrockets. It's not a big issue since I'm on a desktop and nothing will overheat (and the maintenance stops the second I move my mouse cursor), but I don't like that stuff. I tried disabling some of the less important maintenance operations... let's see if that helps. I've never had that problem on Win7. :/

What maintenance tasks are you referring to? It seems unusual that you would have that many configured, and that you'd need to disable some to chill your computer out.

My desktop icons positions do not save, it's infuriating... everytime the resolution changes (launch games etc.), the icons get all jumbled up.

I disabled WinSAT, DataCollector and Analyze System and it seems to have solved the problem. Like I said it wasn't a big deal (a slightly higher CPU temp, no hdd use), it's just my OCD kicking in when Windows does something it wasn't supposed to. :)

Good god, this week's build is really bad. Edge is pratically useless, tons of graphical glitches and my SP3 is losing connection every 10 minutes or so, and you can only get it back by restarting.

Honestly it's not worth getting preview builds on tablets. I learned that the hard way.

It's not a smooth ride for sure, but I don't mind (mostly) XD

Having said that, Ms definitely needs to do something if it's planning on delivering this OS as a service with constant updates. Something was definitely broke when upgrading as doing a hard reset fixed pretty much all the issues.

But having to upgrade (which is really installing windows on top of itself) is already bad enough, when it brakes something that can only be fixed by refreshing the OS is unacceptable and not having any backup system in place for start menu layout and installed apps is a borderline joke.

If they want users constantly upgrading their systems they have to make them much more seamless, and if eventually something happen they should at least properly backup you start menu layout and restore installed apps automatically.

Well I just tried to update from W7 to 10 for my HTPC running Kodi. I like how smooth and slick it is, but the big deal-breaker for me is the messed up HD Audio support. Tried all sorts of options. Yeah, I can get sound but it's downgraded in quality instead of just being passthrough. Thankfully they have the Restore Windows 7 option and it worked flawlessly.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Guys i'm just about at the end of my wit here.

System and Compressed memory is constantly keeping my CPU busy with 30% constant usage as soon as I boot the laptop. Nothing is running and it's taking 30% usage.

I did a restore to the last stable point (2 days ago) but that did nothing.

The issue just started today, nothing like this has happened ever before.

edit: some more info.

- It's not an issue with RAM, RAM is not being reserved or anything. It's just the realy high CPU usage which is making my entire system chug along notably, not to mention draining battery quciker.

- The only recent change i've made is I had an extra 8GB Ram chip installed but that was almost 2 weeks ago, nothing happened in between.

I had that issue last month but one of the automatic updates fixed it

This new build apparently fixed Edge, but the facebook beta app is making Windows Defender go crazy. Every few minutes there's a popup with tons of suspect files Win Defender wants me to review for sending...

Btw, anyone here also trying the Facebook beta app? It's really nice, it's almost as feature complete as the website, and Facebook seems to be doing a great job keeping it up to date, reactions emoji are already supported for instance.

I received it browsing the facebook page using edge. There was an ad saying i was selected for testing with the store link. Will try to find it again.

Bought myself a discounted Surface 3 yesterday. Really enjoying it and Windows 10 runs a lot better than it did on my previous tablet.

Only thing that's really bugging me is the on-screen keyboard support for Chrome. Having to press the keyboard button every time I want to type something is kind of annoying. I don't have the keyboard attachment, so I'm using it solely as a tablet.

There anything in the OS that I've overlooked that might help? I already activated the 'automatically show touch keyboard when no physicial keyboard is connected'-option.

I've tried using Edge, but for some reason it's really slow and sluggish.

I need that new Facebook app for Windows 10. Can't take this old one anymore.

A better Facebook app and a Messenger app would make me so happy. Really makes sense to have it on a tablet.

Explorer restarts everytime I plug or unplug a device, it is really annoying.

It also restarts randomly sometimes. I reset the PC yesterday but the problem is still there. It is a known bug or something?

You cannot install it? I didn't get selected for anything and found the link using Google.

Anyone can install with the link, but your account has to be invited to participate in the beta version.
Yep. Just get this message when trying to sign in:

It's okay though.

Is there any way to ignore individual updates in W10 like you can in earlier versions? I had to uninstall the default Intel drivers for my SP3 and install generic drivers so I could disable the awful dynamic brightness/color adjustment that the SP3 drivers do to videos. But now there is a new update to the drivers, which I guess will overwrite the drivers I installed? But I can't figure out a way to install all updates except for that one.

What the hell Microsoft. I was happily staying on Windows 8 on my SP3, I browsed a bit, went to take a shower, and when I came back I saw it started the process to upgrading to Windows 10 without ever a prompt from me.

I still don't understand how the Windows Store, after three iterations, is still absolute garbage.

I have nine pending app updates and it doesn't show the name and logo for four of them. I have no other way to check what those apps are, because clicking the name or icon does nothing. A change log would be an indicator what those apps could be, but there's no change log on the update page.

Not to mention the broken download progress bar, the wrong icon size and probably a lot more.

Again, after three iterations or the store, how is this still a thing? It's an absolute shitshow.

Stuff like this --the type of problem that existed since its introduction with Windows 8 -- makes me weary of Microsoft's push for the Store and UWA.

Hi everyone, last night I left my PC on to download The Division on uPlay. woke up this morning to a blue screen telling me something about Windows 10 needing a repair and mentioned I should probably restart. Restarted a few times and ended up on the same screen, and then tried some advanced settings like diagnose or something and Safe Mode which didn't appear to work. It also had an option to bypass this menu and go straight into Windows but that didn't work either.

I have no idea how to diagnose this issue or fix it. any ideas on how I can progress through this menu?
Pretty sure if the same thing happened on Win 7 you could just key out of it and get on with things so this is pretty annoying.

Anyway appreciate any advice.

Cheers

I'm curious, did an update to Windows permanently add some sort of scroll smoothing that I'm not aware of? My W10 updated and now it smooth scrolls, which is super weird for me.

Is there seriously no fucking way to right click on an image and choose "Copy Image Location/Address" in Microsoft Edge (Win10)?

I couldn't do this on Internet Explorer on my Windows Phone, so I went over to my laptop and found I couldn't do this on Microsoft Edge in Win10 either. So I had to pull up Firefox in Win10 and I'll permanently use that moving forward on my laptop. It took an unreasonable amount of time for me to properly make this post. Finally Firefox allowed me to get an image's URL address/location to embed an image into my post...

I'm done with Windows Phone moving forward - iPhone will be my next phone for many reasons unrelated to this image issue. And I am permanently done with Microsoft Edge because to me it's baffling and a deal-breaker that you can't do something as simple as find out image location.

Edit: Jesus, and now one of my pornography sites doesn't work on Firefox in Win10? Should I download Chrome and give this whole "Internet Browser" thing another go? =/

Edit2: Thank you god. Chrome in Win10 lets you find an image address and no issues with the aforementioned pornography web site. I'm good to go. I can sleep easy tonight.

So I have been holding out to upgrading win 10, I kept getting notification from microsoft but I kept ignoring them. So right now I just got a notification that it will be upgrading in one hour...I decided to hold off until april 4. Seems like I have no choice now. Microsoft REALLY wants me to update whether I like it or not.

What's recommend path to take when upgrading?
Windows 7 --> 10 I or fresh install?

Try the upgrade through Windows Update. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised at how well it works.

If it doesn't, then you can do a clean install directly from within Windows 10 settings after upgrading.

Hey guys, I'm gonna have to do some component replacements on my PC (possibly mobo) and so I'm looking to wipe my OS/programs drive and start fresh.

My license was originally a Windows 7 license that upgraded to 8, then 10.

What's the recommended install path? Can I just get W10 software install on USB, and enter my W7 key into it when prompted?

I hope it fixes that issue people - including myself - have had with Ethernet Adapters multiplying like wet Mogwais and Ethernet generally not working every once in a while. I'm tired of reinstalling the drivers every time that happens.

I believe your 8 license is now a Windows 10 license and you don't have to do anything but install Windows 10 via USB, skip activation and then run activation after setup once connected to the internet. Pretty sure your Win 10 key lives on MS servers now. The hardware replacement (MOBO) part is making me question the method though and you might have to provide a previous license to reactivate?

Someone please correct me if wrong.

Thanks--I'm hoping this is the case, seems easiest.

In the very least you can deactivate the key with a call.

I've moved the same license twice already, on completely different machines (once to win8 to another with win8, then updated to win10, and moved to yet another afterwards.

Sounds like you're using a KMS Activator for Office, you naughty fella. ;)

That's the cause of the duplicate Windows TAP Adapter issue. The Activator uses those virtual adapters to keep the license active.
