When the official release goes live is one able to do a clean install right off the bat or does one need to do the upgrade+clean install? Not sure how MS is handling the rollout, if an iso will be provided to create a boot cd or what.
I wouldn't count on it unfortunately.
Yeah, you have to do the official upgrade from your original OS first to qualify for the free upgrade.
My computer started at Windows 2000 Pro then upgraded the OS to XP. Replaced different parts including processors, motherboards, but didn't do a clean install. Changed the HDD but cloned the old one into the new. Upgraded to 7 Home Basic then Home Premium then Ultimate. Got a deal years ago to be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for $20, took it then upgraded to 8.1. Tried the Windows 10 Insider Preview and rolled back to 8.1.
I will do a clean install this time.
That reminds me, how was I able to convert 32 bit to 64 bit?
I'm still confused about how it's going to go down...

Didn't get any "sign-up for Windows 10" notification on my Win7 machine, tried doing some stuff manually but the updates didn't work.
Dreamspark account is still active so I'm hoping it'll just show up there as a clean-install ISO of the retail build.

Once you do this, can you then do a clean install using a Windows 10 iso and your same key from Windows 7 or 8?
You click reset from the settings to wipe everything and reinstall, but your activation is stored in the Windows store so you need to skip the key entering when installing and then you should be good to go once you sign in with MS, or reinput your key once you're in Windows.
Still, clicking reset saves a ton of headaches in case it doesn't work.

Ends in 9MPGT-3V66T for Pro? Not sure on the Home one, but yeah, everyone has the same key. That will activate Win 10 as long as it's been upgraded. MS flags your system as an upgraded one and that activates it.
I just looked up what key activated my Win10 install and it's actually neither that generic key, nor my 8.1 key, but something entirely different. So the update seems to have created a new key specific for 10?
Edit: Or not, googled the last 2 parts and someone on a russian forum has the same one. Oh my. Starting to have some doubts about the ISO I got now :lol, will most likely have to reinstall once 10 hits for real. Unless it gives out generic keys based on region, maybe this one is specific for Europe or something.

how can it be easier than pressing a button
If you're a comfy couch gamer it's a nice little tool, you can select the options with the controller and it automatically works with any active window
Edit: I just learned the hard way that the roaming folder is cleaned out when you upgrade. There goes my Dark Souls 2 save. Fuck. Why would you make your games save there developers, whyyy

Mount the ISO, upgrade in Windows then go to settings and click reset to wipe everything and reinstall.

It's a generic key, this is how the upgrade process will work either now or or the official release.

I haven't run into any issues using W10 on my box at home for gaming. Heroes of the Storm, Arkham Knight, Witcher 3, no problems. I just got done using the same ini edits/compatibility options I found on a steam forum to get Hitman: Codename 47 to work on Windows 8 and it worked perfectly in W10 on build 10162, so I'd say compatibility is probably fine.
If it is like Windows 8 install, you may have a Windows.old folder with backups of the appdata
Same, everything installed itself after the upgrade, even things like my mouse software which hasn't gotten an update works fine.
Obviously with the sheer amount of hardware and programs out there, YMMV.

I did. But I kind of fucked up, I installed the first W10 build from Dreamspark thinking it would let me update through Windows Update to the RTM build, then that didn't work and I installed the RTM build on top of it and my Windows.old folder with the W8 stuff died.

Just wondering if any 3D artists have done the test build versions of Windows 10 and tried them with Maya?
I finally got my reservation of 10 to work but I'm going to wait on the install of it till I see how it plays with Maya.

How configurable is it in terms of hot keys? Can you do custom hotkeys or mouse gestures? If I have a mouse with extra buttons, can I assign it to a press of the scroll wheel?

I want to know if this upgrade is going to cause any issues with my Dualshock 4 and windows gaming. Right now I have everything configured on DS4Windows and it works really well (Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Bioshock, etc) I turned down the sensitivity on the touchpad and everything is perfect now.

Even after Drifters warnings people are still going ahead on the ISO installs. The torrent for the RTM installer has over 1000+ seeders as well I think.

Welp, the Windows 10 preview just installed the latest Nvidia driver (353.54) even though I explicitly disabled driver updates through Windows Update.
There was no warning. I stepped away from my system for 20 minutes, came back to find the resolution switched to 1024x768 with Windows asking me to restart to complete the update. It even reinstalled the extra garbage like 3D Vision.
I really, *really* hope this changes on release day. I can understand forcing Windows security fixes but forcing driver updates is psychotic.
