i have a laptop running windows 8 with the free upgrade to 10... lets say i install it and then a month later want to reinstall it fresh... do i have to install windows 8 first again?

No, but it's been suggested by an MS employee that the built in refresh option is as good as a completely clean install anyway.

Catalyst Control Center doesn't wanna load, always says host application stopped working.

Surely you didn't buy an AMD card for their bleed-edge driver releases, did you?

Noob late to the party guys, just got a cheap new laptop last week that came with Windows 8.1.

What do I have to do to be able to get the free Windows 10 update?

Make sure you have all the updates installed.

If you get an icon in the tray that asks you to reserve an upgrade, you're all set!

If you don't get the icon, you'll be able to track down a manual upgrade installer at some point soon after the 29th.

You have a year to claim your free upgrade.

Oh great, thanks. First thing I disabled when I got the laptop was the automatic updates though, lol. I guess I'll have to start downloading them. Thanks again.

My windows 8 tablet finally showed the windows 10 upgrade icon the other night, I didn't brute force it or anything but finally it appeared.

Does the initial upgrade automatically download and install updated drivers for everything it can or just the essential stuff? I don't want it to install new video and drawing tablet drivers and screw everything up.

Oh, sweet. Windows decided to push out their Nvidia driver update again. And it broke my second monitor again. Guess I'm going to have to uninstall Nvidia drivers every single day until they fix this.

This is exactly what i'm trying to avoid.

Nvidia drivers will install every so often for some reason, even if you have the latest version. I'd wait until it's fixed.

Stuff like that is happening because they're on a preview build of Windows, things will break all the way up to launch

I'd wait until it's fully out

I'd say wait beyond then. The driver situation will update you regardless and it's beginning to look like it might be a feature and not a bug. I tested the same process with my laptop on 8.1 for XBox controller drivers, purposefully installed an older one and had the same checkbox turned off as Windows 10 to stop driver downloads. Although it didn't look at windows update on install, once I put older drivers in there, Windows Update wanted to update them. Obviously it is MS, so I might have to try the AMD drivers and see how far I can go back on thsoe.

Now video card drivers are in there and you can't stop updates on Core and the only option you have on pro is to defer them for 8 months. It doesn't even let you see a list of what's pending to make a choice...

My laptop has an old AMD mobile card. I just want to know if the upgrade itself will force any unnecessary updates on me.

Yeah I'm waiting until a week to month after it releases since I should be able to defer updates then. Don't want to mess with it at all right now.

Well fuck, guess I'm staying on 8.1.

So, I installed Win 10 just now with one of the ESD files. Tried installing something and a pop-up happened that told me: "Your app isn't compatible with Windows 10 Insider Preview". It's not even launching the installer lol.

I suppose this is gonna stop once Win 10 is properly released on Wednesday? Or is there anything I can do to disable that message?

What is the program/app?

Either try the ISO/bootable USB, or just wait.
Or uninstall the program it doesn't like.

I'm not running dual monitors, but I'm not having this issue with Nvidia drivers reinstalling themselves. I check for updates constantly on both Geforce Experience and Windows Update. /shrug

Panda Free Antivirus 2015. I got sick of Avast so I wanted to try out a bunch of new stuff, but yeah I cant even launch the installer because Windows leads me to this page http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-incompatible-app

Kinda sucks, even if it's not compatible Id like to at least install it and see for myself lol. Really hope that's not gonna happen to some of my more important software.
Oh yeah, get rid of any A/V before you upgrade.

Most of them interact with the OS at a pretty low level, so you'll have to get a Windows 10 compatible one if you don't trust Windows Defender.

Well, I had to find a Windows 8 RTM ISO and install it, as Microsoft seem to have forgotten what Windows 8 is. I installed it, it didn't ask for any key (grabbed the one in the bios automatically), and now I have an activated Windows again. Its installin 150 updates, then I can update to windows 8.1 and in a few days to 10.

Guys this is driving me crazy: The taskbar doesnt autohide, after some time it works but get stuck without hiding , I have to restart windows explorer process to make it work again....for a short time.

Any solution?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

I was able to use my Windows 8 key to install Windows 8.1 using that. Doesn't it work with BIOS keys?

I reserved my version of win10 on my pc, i won't automatically upgrade right? I have to give it the go ahead which basically i can leave it sitting there for 3 months and stay in 8.1 if i so choose, right?

I don't know if this has been answered yet, does anyone know what will happen to your steam games and saves. Will everything be gone ... or will some parts transfer to windows 10 ?

I have never used this feature, but I turned it on just for you right now.
Seems to be working, I'll post back if it doesn't work for me as well.

You'll have to confirm the upgrade, yes.
If you want to delay it, I'm sure you'll be able to upgrade for the entire next year.

I think this is what is happening to me. I have to reinstall the driver every day now. WTF

I'm praying to the old Golds and the new that the forced 3rd party bullshit isn't in the release version.

did they remove the "hide update" feature from win10?

this NVidia thingy is getting silly.
Glad I'm not the only one with the problem or penchant for neatness.
I'm sure it'll go away eventually. Hasn't even been released for public public public consumption yet.

If you have a valid key forever. If not you can stay on the Insider Preview builds until MS decides to discontinue the program.

well i have a valid key but its on my laptop. This desktop had a valid W7 key but i did a fresh install and I really dont want to go back and install W7 just to get the option for W10..

For this desktop, would there be an option to download W10 if I provide the key on say their website?

Wondering this too. I used the registry trick to get my upgraded 10074 build to 10240 and the activation of my system was somehow lost in the process. It keeps bugging me about activating windows in the lower right corner with none of my legit W7/8/8.1 keys working (not surprised though).
I guess it's either:
- Hope they allow us to redeem the old keys on launch day
- Return to W8.1 and start fresh (ugh...)
- Wait for DreamSpark to release W10 keys (surprised there are none yet, W8/8.1 keys/dls were out days in advance)

The Nvidia drivers that Windows installed (353.54) fixed the glitches that I had on .50. Now everything works 100% as it should (incl. my secondary monitors). No complaints.

What is the most current insider build? I'm on version 10162 and having a lot of problems on my surface pro 3. I see higher version numbers on various websites but my windows update still says i'm up to date. I have fast track selected but it seems like its been a long time since actually receiving an update.

Guys, I'm on Windows 8.1, had the Windows 10 icon show up normally last month, reserved my copy but I formatted my PC a few days ago and now it's gone... Do you know how if I'll have any issues?

Install all updates and make sure your copy of 8.1 is reactivated. It'll eventually show up again.

I'm not sure it will. Testing in 8.1 with some other drivers and that tickbox unchecked for getting drivers from Windows Update still gets them. I'm beginning to think you can't stop them.

Eh, doing my part to prevent an Intel/Nvidia monopoly. I like to support the underdog.

That's an expensive role to take my man.
Why not let AMD work in preventing a monopoly, and buy into their hardware when they get their shit together.

But I mean, if principle > performance/reliability, my hats off. You're a stronger consumer than me.

The release build went out several days ago. No longer a preview build. There was only a limited window where they had it up on Update though prior to official release on the 29th.

That's not the case.

Anyone who already has an insider preview installed can still update via windows update to 10240. They only disabled new clean install activations via ISO and removed the ISO links.

In fact they have just asked for people on older preview builds to update via windows update to 10240 so that they can test the new app store. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ndows-10/114b56a3-d7fc-40bb-ac07-774cee7ca402

There are some bugs though which stop the update showing up for some people. There are some steps to try and get windows update to find 10240 like making sure you are signed into a microsoft account, switching between slow and fast ring, running windows update troubleshooter, resetting windows update cache etc. etc.

I'm pretty late on realizing this, but after a lot of pointless research I finally understand that Windows 8.1 Enterprise won't be getting the free upgrade. Is there anyway to "downgrade" to pro without any sort of hassle concerning wiping data? I have access to a Windows 8.1 Pro key if it matters.

System > advanced system settings > hardware > device installation settings
Allows you to turn off automatic driver updates on Windows 8.1

Maybe it's still around in Windows 10?

That doesn't turn off driver updates, it turns off automatic driver installs when you plug a new device in.
