It'll work. Otherwise why would Microsoft have it on their site?
Their activation servers are being hammered, just be patient.
Did you use the media creation tool? I'm starting to think that's the issue. Perhaps you HAVE TO wait for Windows Update to do its thing to get a working W10 license. Shit.
So I have been stuck at reset thing this pc 99% for like half hour. Used the recovery thing to do a clean install from Windows 10 not sure what to do as I doubt it would take this long think something went wrong.
It's possible that the download has been corrupted. Try this.
That is not it. I used the creation too.
Can you upgrade from 8.1 via an .iso (downloaded from Microsoft)?
I did. Seems to have worked fine. Says its activated.

I was also stuck for a long, long time at this step. You just have to be patient and let the computer do its thing. Mine was stuck on 99% for maybe at least 45 min or so?
TL;DR: Just be patient and let the computer complete the reset process. Don't mess around with it!
Had the same message with my laptop after the data was downloaded and the installer was preping the installation.I keep getting this error message when I do the command line force update.

Updated finally.
Now to do a clean install, for people that have done it, how did you do it? I've seen conflicting information.

I used the reset method found from the Settings App in Windows 10. It seemed stuck at 66% and 99%, but let the process continue and then you will be back at the Windows 10 desktop in no time!
Well, at least I'm not the only one.I keep getting this error message when I do the command line force update.

Update consistently fails with SOMETHING HAPPENED trying to use the Media Creation tool. Now the little taskbar icon is gone. Oh, well.
Ok, thanks! Did you burn it on a DVD, or did you just mount it?

Just through the reset option in the restore settings. It deletes everything and reinstalls Windows, should be as good as installing fresh from USB/DVD. I can't activate Windows though, but I couldn't before I did the reset either.
.
How did you get your key to begin with? I never got one.
Ok brilliant, couldn't be bothered to start pissing around with ISOs.
Is trying to activate just giving you "Windows can't activate. Try again later"? Might wait until I can activate until I go clean.

Your windows 7 key is no use in the installation of windows 10. Its only use is in activating your windows 7 that you are upgrading from.question about using the Official MS provided downloader
is it as simple as putting in my Win 7 key?

For people with activation problems, have you tried the other activation panel? There is a metro style activation page in settings as well as the old style, one of them allows you to trigger an activation attempt.
Just successfully updated my surface. Can I safely delete the windows.old folder now?
Disk Cleanup. You'll have to also choose "Clean up system files" in order to remove old Windows versions.
I reserved my Win 10 as soon as it came available. Is a notification just going to pop up randomly to install Win 10? I on Windows 7 if that helps.

Are you sure about this? In that case I might be screwed, yay!
The one in the old-style control panel just brings you to the new one, where it fails.
