Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Finally on Windows 10. Used the Media Tool to upgrade.

Like others, I can't activate it though and hope I can in the following days.

Not sure if it's in the UK yet but I'm still waiting for the install to pop up. Not going to download off the site and mount, I haven't got any blank CDs.

It'll work. Otherwise why would Microsoft have it on their site?

Their activation servers are being hammered, just be patient.

Hmm, yeah, guess I'll give it a bit more time. It would be really stupid of them to allow you to upgrade using that tool and not warn you that doing so won't give you a valid license (as long as you don't choose to do a clean install off USB/DVD rather than upgrade).

Did you use the media creation tool? I'm starting to think that's the issue. Perhaps you HAVE TO wait for Windows Update to do its thing to get a working W10 license. Shit.

That is not it. I used the creation too.

So I have been stuck at reset thing this pc 99% for like half hour. Used the recovery thing to do a clean install from Windows 10 not sure what to do as I doubt it would take this long think something went wrong.

I was also stuck for a long, long time at this step. You just have to be patient and let the computer do its thing. Mine was stuck on 99% for maybe at least 45 min or so?

TL;DR: Just be patient and let the computer complete the reset process. Don't mess around with it!

It's possible that the download has been corrupted. Try this.

That's actually what I did last night except that it only works if I leave the files in that folder. I'm sure it's just a particular one or two it actually needs, but after trying and failing the first time, I copied the folder elsewhere and then cleared all the contents it let me and it couldn't pull the update again. I then merged my copied folder back with the original one and I was able to pull again. Still ended up failing the same way regardless.

I dunno about now but mine hung up on the insiders build when I had stuff plugged into my USB ports.

Same here it took over an hour. I was starting to get nervous. Then it pulled thou.

I keep getting this error message when I do the command line force update.

I have all updates installed on 8.1 64 Bit.

Help.
Had the same message with my laptop after the data was downloaded and the installer was preping the installation.

Bleh.

Update consistently fails with SOMETHING HAPPENED trying to use the Media Creation tool. Now the little taskbar icon is gone. Oh, well.

Updated finally.

Now to do a clean install, for people that have done it, how did you do it? I've seen conflicting information.

I used the reset method found from the Settings App in Windows 10. It seemed stuck at 66% and 99%, but let the process continue and then you will be back at the Windows 10 desktop in no time!

Just through the reset option in the restore settings. It deletes everything and reinstalls Windows, should be as good as installing fresh from USB/DVD. I can't activate Windows though, but I couldn't before I did the reset either.

NOTE: The "restore to previous version of Windows" option disappears after doing this, as it wipes the files needed to do this.

Yeah, it stayed at those same percentages for a long time for me too.

Well, at least I'm not the only one.

Upgraded without any problems on my Surface, but my Desktop is showing the same message. Something seems to be incompatible, if I only knew what...

Got stuck a good while as well. Was on 1% for AGES, got shit scared. But I was patient and then finally it jumped to 5%. Unbelievable relief.

It seems I have all the files and everything is ready to go, but I haven't gotten a notification yet. Now we wait.

.

Ok brilliant, couldn't be bothered to start pissing around with ISOs.

Is trying to activate just giving you "Windows can't activate. Try again later"? Might wait until I can activate until I go clean.

Quick question about One Drive. I want to do a clean install now that it has settled but everything uploaded to a One Drive folder and when I log into my account it shows other stuff I've uploaded in the past, but not what the Windows 10 app just did. How do I keep/retrieve this after a clean install.

I want to update my work pc, but apparently the website I use for work isn't compatable with the new browser. Can you install Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 (just the regular version, not Pro)?

Not sure what's going on. The wuauclt command didn't work. Starting the Media Creation Tool at least created the $Windows.~BT folder, but nothing else seems to happen. The folder's size is 24kb and doesn't change. Also, the taskbar icon for the Windows 10 upgrade registration has disappeared.

Yep. And checking the error information says the license couldn't be found or isn't valid. Hopefully it's just an activation server issue...

Out of interest, has anyone received the email that says your upgrade is ready? I'm waiting until I get that to bother trying to upgrade, but I haven't seen many mentions of it in this thread from people who haven't forced the update. I'm wondering if there's actually any correlation between receiving the email and windows update allowing you to upgrade.

Do not reset or clean install until Windows 10 has activated, otherwise Microsoft won't have recorded your hardware details and free upgrade status.

For people with activation problems, have you tried the other activation panel? There is a metro style activation page in settings as well as the old style, one of them allows you to trigger an activation attempt.

question about using the Official MS provided downloader

is it as simple as putting in my Win 7 key?
Your windows 7 key is no use in the installation of windows 10. Its only use is in activating your windows 7 that you are upgrading from.

So my laptop restarted as part of the install when it was around 71% complete, now it's seemingly stuck on a black screen with a cursor in the center that I can't move. Hopefully something didn't go wrong...

Are you sure about this? In that case I might be screwed, yay! The license key (of which I can only see the last 5 characters) is the same after the reset as it was before though.

EDIT: The reset procedure (where it reinstalls Windows) didn't ask me for a key either, it just went through automatically just like the original upgrade. Shouldn't that mean I don't need a key...?

The one in the old-style control panel just brings you to the new one, where it fails.

Disk Cleanup. You'll have to also choose "Clean up system files" in order to remove old Windows versions.

I just found a "Windows.old" folder from my Win 7 to Win 8.1 upgrade back in 2013. It's around 700MB and Disk Cleanup never got rid of it. I'm assuming it's safe to just delete it.

Surface Pro 2 is on Win10 now. I'm going to allow myself a few days to get used to it before moving forward on my desktop. It's a bummer there is no Oblytile equivalent yet as I put a lot of effort into custom tiles for my 8.1 start screen. It's still early though, so hopefully someone will create an application sooner rather than later. The original developer isn't sure he can do it for Win10, but I suppose we'll see.

Disable Windows Defender:

Hit Windows+R keys and enter regedit into Run dialog
In Registry Editor navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Policies\ Microsoft\ Windows Defender
If you see DisableAntiSpyware parameter on the right side, double click it, then change value to “1” to disable Windows Defender.
If there’s no such parameter, just create new DWORD, name it DisableAntiSpyware and set its value to “1”.
Close registry editor.
