So I need to install Windows updates to get the reserve thingy right?
Says last time I checked for updates was 2012. Hopefully this doesn't take too long... lol

I'm in the same boat. I built this computer last year, and never did the updates. Now i have 124 updates that refuse to install. It doesn't matter if I try just one update at a time, or all of them, they all fail with that delightful "Windows has failed configuring updates. Reverting changes".
Nothing I've tried to fix it has worked.

But I was able to download SP1 and the KB303whatever to get the "get Windows 10" icon.

When I was doing my Windows updates, I'm pretty sure one of the 'important updates' was IE 11. I don't use IE, yet here I was installing it because MS says it's an important update... They can throw whatever they want on there, and I am not exactly fond of that.

If the options exist to defer it for several months, I'm sure a work around could be developed that just indefinitely defers them.
Or people will complain and Windows 10.1 won't have it.

IE11 is an optional update in Windows Update.

So the defer option on Pro just stops updates for 8 months, other than security, which are automatically installed regardless. There is no option to update deferred updates manually, you just wait 8 months then they're pushed onto you.

I used a refresh option about a month ago for an older build. If I remember correctly it only just did a clean install on the drive that Windows 10 was on. You don't have a choice in moving it to another drive unless you use an ISO to clean install.

Sucks, but I had to reinstall 8.1 on the new SSD and now I'm just waiting for 10. Maybe you can clone your 8.1 install to the new drive and then wait for 10.

Ugggggggggggggh

How does using an ISO work in this situation? Decline to upgrade to 10 on the 29th and do it straight from 8.1?

The best thing to do would be to upgrade so that you get Windows 10 associated with your hardware/microsoft account.

Then do a clean install to wherever you want and it will automatically activate.

I feel your pain. Haven't been able to update windows since the dreaded SP1 update bug. I've spent 2 days trying to get it to update to be ready for 10 all to no avail.

I think I'm going for a full reinstall of win7 after the 29th, then a full re install of win10. Only Microsoft could provide such fun and efficiency. :)

If you're going to do it through Windows Update, you probably won't get it on the 29th. They're being phased so I assume those that those that reserved first should get it first.

You'd probably just be better off downloading the ISO when it's released and clean installing over Windows 7. Or you could even do that now, it's not difficult to download the RTM files from Microsoft and convert them to an ISO.

Great, guess I'm stuck with 7 for a while then. Its my work machine so I can't spend anymore time off line. Apparently you need SP1 for the invite :(

I'm sure there'll be converted ESDs that you'll be able to use. I'm also betting that it's the same as the ISO that's out now, since it can do Windows Update to grab the W10 updates before installing, so there is the manual file upgrade path should you choose.

Is this possible if you don't have an invite though? (My win7 ultimate is official)

Yeah, it goes through fine from what I've heard. You can always give it a try now and if it asks you for a key, it's not working (might need updates, not sure). If it doesn't, then it will work.

Cool thanks, I'll give it a go. What build/version should I look for?

If I have s tablet and PC. Can I link them both to the same Microsoft account I use for Windows 10 ?

Speaking of forced updates. There's a new update which causes my laptop to go into an automatic repair loop with no way of entering into windows without resetting the whole OS. Anyone else experiencing this?

Been googling around and the only option seems to be switching on some obscure BIOS feature which my laptop doesn't have...

So apparently my copy of Windows 7 was part of a subscription that expired recently. Will I still be able to switch to W10?

I'm still confused about how the Windows 10 key becomes locked to your hardware. Can someone elaborate on that? I'm quite confused regarding it.

After the upgrade, you get a generic key. Your activation is stored with Microsoft so if you ever have to do a fresh install, you put in the generic key and when you sign in with your MS account, it'll activate.

For the lock, it's the same thing as what happens now. If you change too much on your system, you'll need to contact MS to get them to reactivate you or release your Windows 7/8/8.1 key depending on how they decide to do it.

They don't specifically give you a key, you don't need to put in any keys at all to activate either.

They are linking windows 10 to your hardware ID based upon your devices hardware. No CD keys are required to be entered in an upgrade and it just activates if the hardware matches when you do a clean install on the same PC, you can just skip any requests for a CD key.

When you guys talk about forced updates, do you mean just security updates or drivers too?
Security updates don't bother me but windows deciding what driver to install for my gpu does. A lot actually.

No, but once you're activated, you do have a generic key that you can enter if you ever have to install from scratch.

If you don't like IE on your system you can uninstall it or at least hide by going into the uninstall feature inside of the uninstall program in the control panel.

But you don't need to enter it ever even for a fresh install, provided it is the same hardware.

Windows 10 never shows you the key, Microsoft never send it to you, the only way you would know it is to use a key checker or CMD.

Current upgrades and activations all use the same key, or don't even return a cd key when you check.

Post release if you need to do a fresh install on new hardware and want to get microsoft to transfer your license against the EULA to different hardware, the link to your microsoft account would be all they need.

Sorry if already asked. so.. after upgrading I started noticing some truly random stuff regarding my GPU I suppose. Running nVidia driver version 353.54 I started getting obnoxious flickering of certain windows under certain conditions.

Looks like this, just random stuff happening that lets my desktop background kinda shine through https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qTrJ63iM-0

Is that a known thing with Win 10 or the 353.54 drivers by any chance? Doesnt happen while playing games for example, only happens with certain Windows like Chrome. Happens on both of my monitors.
Also, it's NOT my GPU dying lol

Yes this is a known problem. You can try and update via windows update to 353.62 and see if that stops it, or you can roll back to 353.30 but inevitably be updated again.

There seems to be general issues with multi-monitor systems at the moment. What card? (Lot of 970's around here.)

I'm on a 780ti, but I don't run dual monitors. (I used to, but they were CRT's.)

How do I re-run the 'test' the little Windows 10 request App runs? It checked my computer whilst I was running windows in VMWare, and decided my hardware wasn't up to snuff because of it. It seems like it runs automatically once a month.

Is the reset option in settings legit the same as clean installing?

Both refresh and reset are clean installs.

They both format the disc and reinstall Windows 10, but refresh puts your documents and files to one side and then restores them after its complete.

Reserve Windows 10 thing finally showed up.
Is it just going to download the image in the background to my C drive?
If so gonna have to manually download it to another drive later then.

IE11 has nothing to do with Windows 10 upgrade. I got the Windows 10 thing and I don't have IE11 installed.

You're missing the point.
IE11 is listed as an important update. Sure, on Windows 7 I could just click the check box and make it not download IE11. But if this was Windows 10, you do not get to choose to not download things listed as important updates, that is what I am saying. Any thing they push under that you would be forced to download.
