Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

So if I go to my update settings and hit turn off insider builds then I'm pretty much at retail windows 10? Also, what do I use as my product key if I ever have to reinstall or something?

I had a laptop that shipped wih Windows 7. I then updated to Windows 8 buying a key from the BST thread here.

I want to upgrade to an SSD and Windows 10. Do I need to do anything special with keys etc or can I just whack a new drive in and install fresh on it (once an ISO is officially available)?

I saw some network activity on my laptop, went to the C:\$Windows.~BT folder, and it's downloading W10 :D I'm not in Insider Preview, only on W10M.

This is exciting!

Guys quick question, I am running the fast ring of Windows 10 Insider. Is it true that the version we have now isn't going to be updated before tomorrow and it's safe to do a reset to begin fresh? My PC says that I have Windows 10 Pro now but not sure if this is THE one..

You have to do the upgrade through Windows 8.1 first, otherwise it won't activate.

That's a really terrible idea. Stuff like this needs to be opt in, not opt out, from a network perspective.

They actually dont understand how it works. Your friends cant share your network to their friends.

You share with your contacts, but not their contacts. The networks you share aren't shared with your contacts' contacts. If your contacts want to share one of your networks with their contacts, they'd need to know your actual password and type it in to share the network.

So swap to the SSD, install win 8, update to 8.1, then upgrade to 10? (Or is there an 8.1 ISO now?)

No issues just fresh installing win 8/8.1 on a clean drive? Will the key be in the motherboard or something even though the original machine was win7?

Mine is downloading. The hidden folder is only 140MB in size and staying that way, but I can see a lot of network activity and downloading coming from c-0001.c-msedge.net, which is a Microsoft Azure datacentre.

Probably the easiest way. I don't think changing the hard drive would flag up Windows activation issues, but you never know. I don't think the key wold be in the BIOS unless you've specifically done something to put it in there, but I could be wrong.

There is an 8.1 ISO, but you won't be able to get it from MS's site officially with a Win 8 key. If you get hold of it, you have ot skip entering the key on the new instal and enter your Windows 8 key once you're actually in Windows itself.

If anyone was curious upgrading to Windows 10 doesn't invalidate your previous key. Just went from Windows 7 > Windows 10 > clean Windows 7 install and it activated fine.

4 years of updates is really something else. My laptop even ran out of memory at one point lol

I tried resetting my laptop, but now I can't even install updates so I can get Windows 8.1. Is there any way for a non insider to download Windows 10 and install it via a DVD?

I'm fucking tired of Windows 8, piece of garbage.

Yeah but you're not eligible for an upgrade unless you install 8.1. Dunno if it'll work but you can try using this tool:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

That should create media to install 8.1 directly.

I've got a few questions. Not sure if they've been answered already. Couldn't really find an answer.

Is there some sort of ISO that comes with Windows 10 that I can burn to a DVD disk or transfer over to a USB drive. Something where I can install Windows from a physical medium?

Also, if I upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 and then decide to get a new SSD/HDD down the line. How would I install Windows 10 on that without the ISO?

Is there a way to do a fresh clean install to Windows 10 rather than the upgrade path?

And, is the Windows 7 activation key linked to Windows 10 activation?

Thanks for answering these.

I just looked at my update panel and it's showing the update for 10 pro is failing. It's giving me the error code 80240020.

Going to leave my MBP on overnight, and maybe through out the day tomorrow.
Not going to try to force the update...In MS I trust.

So there's virtually nothing different between what's being downloaded to some of your PC's right now and the 10240 build right? I installed that yesterday and got the latest updates (blocked the Nvidia one), so I'm wondering if there's any reason to rollback to 8.1 or just stick with what I've got.
