Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

One of the updates got stuck so I rebooted and seems fine now, awesome. Tried a couple of games, it's fixed the fullscreen issue I used to have. No complaints here.

Win10 with classic shell ahh much better. I really dislike all those tiles in the start menu since they are just distractions and the programs menu isn't as functional as before.

But isn't that a clean install disc, and it needs W10 key, which we won't have before upgrading?

Download the iso just don't choose to download updates, just save to usb or .iso, extract the files (if .iso), run the Setup.exe and choose to upgrade your system, profit.

I had to do that, my windows was not updating at all.

Yep, a lot of it is still a step backwards from Win 7. Control Panel/Settings is the biggest problem.

After deleting the files and folders and trying the force update way, I get the error code message during the preparing install bit.

Fuck this I can't be arsed.

EDIT - Tried one more time and now the Windows 10 download is 4.2gb rather than 2.1gb.

Updated my Surface Pro 3 this morning. Quick impressions

Edge doesn't bring over anything from IE by default. You can quickly import Favorites but not passwords (UGH).
Doesn't seem to be a tablet mode in Edge.
I preferred my desktop going horizontal not vertical.

Everything else is super snappy.

Any gestures for forward/back? I preferred metro IE for that reason on touch screen Windows. Would be a shame to lose that.

Yea I'm surprised they still haven't migrate everything to the new format but instead just wrap the simplified format on top of the old stuff... The biggest win with Win10 is basically just being able to run Apps in windows so they behave like desktop apps I guess.

So this W10 thing looks cool and all, but it reset my touchpad-settings. I don't want inverted scrolling, and it scrolls really fucking slowly now.

I tried looking under mouse properties but couldn't figure it out.

Edit: Found inversion...

Edit 2: And scroll-speed, but maxing it out still feels sluggish.

I also didn't like that. Notice that they added a ton of gestures this time around, which is nice except that I had middle-mouse mapped to a three-finger click and now I don't even know if I can do that anymore.

Actually, the point is moot. I'm going back to 8.1 on my laptop because Dell isn't even supporting Windows 10 on this model (at least not yet). Video playback is super sluggish and I doubt they'll ever fix it. It's not even an old laptop or anything, although it is cheap.

Was doing the upgrade, got to 90-something percent. Then the computer rebooted automatically and now the screen is black with only a mouse cursor. Is it supposed to be like this for ages, or is it broken?

So how do I make my PC start downloading it?

How to force the update:

1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder, but not the folder itself.

2. Now, run a command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" with no quotes.

3. Wait a minute, and watch the folder you just emptied. It should start to have files show up.

4. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start downloading. Once that is completed, you will be prompted to begin the installation process*

*may not work in territories where W10 is not released

Hope that helps

That did absolutely nothing for me.

However, using the media creation tool seems to be working. It's downloading at least, don't know if the actual install is gonna work yet.

Is there anyway to customize the left side of the start menu? I just have loads of dead space there. I'd like to be able to pin my most used items there so I could disable the tiles altogether which would feel more like Windows 7.

Yep, I tried getting used to it, but not being able to pin the apps on the left is worse than the 7 way. And the non-metro app icons look bad there anyway.

I need to figure out how to get some of my Recently Watched 'movies' from appearing in Quick Access -> Recent Files lol

Folder options > uncheck "Show recently used files in Quick Access". Any of that recent file stuff is just asking for trouble.

Unfortunately i dont use apps. All i notice are regressions.

EG
UI duplication and loss of focus. Search notifications, you are taken to the Settings App. However if you want to turn of those notifications relating to Windows itself (like firewall is off, no antivirus etc) you must go through the control panel, it will not even come up in search!

In Explorer, you have recent folders, personal folders pinned. And then personal folders again in This PC - which are also pinned! Its just stupid.

Awful start menu Most Used list which barely updates and shows a maximum of 6 programs no matter the size. There is no easy way to open Control Panel from Start.

The way Start menu stacks the folders below most used programs is the biggest waste of space ive seen! You have to compromise between these folders and programs that you always use. It was so much better on the right hand side like in 7 - no compromise needed.

The All Apps tray is not friendly for me, i find i have to scroll around so much more because so such a small amount of entries are listed compared to 7 due to the huge size of each entry. Clicking on the Letters is a good idea, but sometimes you dont know what you are looking for until you see it, having such a small number of entries causes me to scroll around till i finally find what im looking for, its better to just have the list there and use your eyes to look down a list.

Task Manager is more feature-full but also is much slower to open on first attempt, or after some time. It also lost the "New Task" button, instead hidden in File menu - Why?! It made sense having new and end task next to each other....

UAC is still broken and so is the general permissions compared to Win 7. I beleive it was the same in 8. Turning UAC off causes problems rather than just allowing everything to run elevated by default. It works perfectly in 7.

Installing now. Had to right click the icon and hit check upgrade status. That showed it had downloaded and let me begin the install.

Just finished installing windows 10 from windows 7...no immediate complaints except I hate how they always want to try and "help" people get access to common folders and files, and bring to the forefront previous viewed files and shit...

I mean come on lol, true, I mostly am the only person using my PC, but if someone did happen to sit down on it, I don't need them to see that some of the last viewed files I had or frequent folders might've be full of porn lol

when should I expect the download to start if I don't to bother forcing it?

about to leave for work and I just want to get an idea since I'll be gone most of the day

Yep. When I upgraded Start8 was still installed. It kind of threw me for a second. Speaking of which, Start10 is apparently a thing!:

Well something like this yeah.

How far "classic" do you want to go?

In theory, yes. But its design will look different at any rate. 3rd party malware will help you get back to real Windows 2000 style start menus.

yea. Windows doesn't let you run the installer (at least for Classic Shell) but just rename it to something else and it will install.

I used classic shell for 8.1 so more like that again

Well after the install staying stuck on 95% for an hour i decided to turn off the surface. It restored windows 8.1 fine but now won't even say i can update to windows 10. What a faff this is, you'd think a Microsoft made device would be the least problematic!

Finally!

Woke up and it was still reserved. Windows Update gave me an error as well. The Download Tool from Microsoft wouldn't run for me either. I ran CMD as Administrator, and did "net stop wuauserv" and then clicked on the icon again and now this:

Ya I totally agree on the redundancy in the UI flow. It's really like they are trying to make it less daunting to casual users but it simply make everything so much worse for power users.

I think being able to install classic shell solves my complaints about the new start menu; it's not perfect but good enough for me. I get that they really like their tiles but I think they should only belong to full screen start menu.

So turning off UAC is only half working? I haven't done that in ages... I just turn off the screen dimming.

GWX.exe refuses to run now. I try to open it and it does nothing and isn't in task manager.

Anyone else receiving a blank white page when opening the Windows Store?

Well something like this yeah.

Classic shell works fine for me, have you tried installing it again?

Have a link to this?

The CNET > Dropbox link is currently down. This one works

I was gonna install W10 on my dad's PC first to try it out, but after attempting to force the update, I've since lost the Windows 10 update prompt all together, and absolutely nothing brings it back, including the win10fix_full.cmd. I'll need to do a fresh install of the OS, unless something else comes up within the next few days.

Gonna wait until things settle down before I try again. Not in a hurry anyway.

After messing around with the folder sorry dLMN8R, get the media tool and installed have it running 2 hours and love it, now need to go home and sort out my home computer. Only got playing a wee bit with the preview before on VMware so nice to running this properly

Hmm... Is there a list of territories where W10 has been launched? Because that may explain why I might still be in "We'll let you know when the upgrade is ready".
