Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Alright, I got a problem/question:

I had been using Windows Insider on my SP3. I've been on Windows 10 build 10240 for the past week or two (whenever it was released), under the impression that this is the RTM build.

Like most people, I did an upgrade over W8.1, but with W10 releasing today, I wanted to start "fresh" and get the full, new experience while hopefully cleaning out any issues that may have arisen over the past month of new builds, upgrades, etc.

So I chose to Reset my PC. It prompted my SP3 to reboot, which it did, but now it's stuck in a loop. It reboots to an error screen that says to reference this error "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE".

Everything I've read indicates I'm going to need to hopefully launch into a recovery mode and likely need to format the drive. However, I'm not sure where I should go from there--will I need to install Windows 8/8.1 on my SP3 and then upgrade to W10?

Thanks HaraKiri, so would I get the key if I upgraded with the Media Create Tool from Microsoft?

So after I upgrade, I can get the key and an ISO and then clean install?

I didn't personally do this method, so I would ask in the gaming section thread about W10.

According to the tool page, you can't get the key from simply starting off with the media create tool, because it's your first time installing W10. You need the upgrade process to make your key into a W10 key (it's hardware bound), then you can do another full clean install after that if you wish.

That's my take. Again, check around.

Only seeing one of my dual screens after install. Nvidia must be getting hammered it is taking forever to download a 200mb file

I only see one screen also. My worse problem is that my internet does not work at all on my desktop due to windows 10 so it's annoying trying to diagnose this on an old laptop.

Thanks. I'll check around, give it a shot, and report back.

Ok so finally.

I fucking wish someone told me this.

I've been using the manual download tool from the microsoft website.

It doesnt work when hitting upgrade.

However if I make a USB stick the download starts.

Like...fuck me...

I bet this somehow fails.

Reading the past few pages has reconfirmed my decision to wait a few weeks before doing this update.
More like be patient and not try to force your pc to update even though Microsoft havent sent you the confirmation message that its time for you to update.

Seriously, as much as im looking forward to getting 10 (Mainly so i can format my pc and start fresh) the amount of people here that maybe should have just waited for the notification seems pretty high.

Looks like whatever that update was installed on reboot (I tried the force and it failed), now the only optional update is skype.

Safe to try the force method again?

I'm really disliking how the went back to the old style taskbar pinned icons, where the icon remains even after opening the app.

If there's an easy way to fix it, I haven't found it yet.

I've had more time to mess around with Windows 10. It's running great on my HP Stream 7, and the option to switch from desktop to touch is really awesome. I also upgraded my Windows 7 work desktop, with hardware from 2008 and it's running great. I'm really impressed with this OS so far. I'll be upgrading two home desktops from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 later today.

If I'm upgrading will I need 20GB in addition to what Windows 7 is already using or will it simply be using the disk space that is already in use? I have my OS on a 60GB partition, just wondering if that needs to be adjusted before installation starts.

You have to change to grouped taskbar icons (which in return turns them into the smaller icons with no text next to them).

What's this $Windows.~WS folder in my C:\ drive? It's 5.76GB.

Did you use the media tool? that fodler showed after I tried downloading the ISo

This is the shittiest way to get an OS upgrade I've seen in a long ass time.

If you're going to release an ISO don't tell people to wait for this bullshit Upgrade method with no timetables, and random error messages that makes users think something has gone wrong with the pre-load.

So I got it and it installed quickly and easily. Good job Microsoft.

Now what? Anything I need to do/try or change from how I did things previously?

no doubt you should be able to delete any of the icons from the taskbar that you don't want there. prob just right click * unpin from taskbar * or something similar

but hasnt it always just highlighted or whatever when opened?

Is there a way to quickswitch between desktops on one monitor? I love the idea of having 2 with different things open but cant find out how to switch between two without hitting some tabs or win+tab and selecting.

They didn't, I think that's something specific to iTunes.

If you are like me and using Nvidia, I had a error when installing their application, after a scary reboot (black screen for lie mnutes) the Geforce app was installed and my 2 screens are back

So any good guides on new features/settings I might want to turn on/off? I think I found most of the privacy ones but I'm sure I missed something. Trying to figure out why my MS Store apps won't download now.

In regards to kicking off the install faster.

$Windows.~WS is 2.66GB right now.

Should I run the setuphost or just wait for my USB install to download which is currently at 40%?

Whats the best way to install this? A clean install or just an upgrade, or can we do a clean install if upgrading from 8.1

According to the tool page, you can't get the key from simply starting off with the media create tool, because it's your first time installing W10.

Where does it say that? The media creation tool allows you to either create an ISO from which to install (in which case, yeah, you won't have a key) or to just perform the upgrade right from the program. The latter should be the same as waiting for Windows Update to get its thumb out of its ass...? It seems to be going well for me at least. I'm almost 50% through the install, and it hasn't asked me for a key or anything.

Is there anyway to resize the start menus width? I have about 3 small tiles worth of space that's empty that I'd like to get rid of but it won't let me.

Nvidia appears to have just pushed through a "Game Ready Driver" for Windows 10 today. Dunno if it might help some of the issues people have had or not.

"If you will be installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key."

Some people have been asked for a key, others pressed upgrade and it just worked. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

this also happens to me with certain apps (ie: winamp). Looking for fix

edit: fixed it by removing and re-pinning it :/

Cool. I'll try tonight if I have time. 341.74 version I'm assuming? Looks like that's the latest for Windows 7x64 (for cards older than 400 series).

309.08 (i used that "Manually find drivers for my NVIDIA products" thing)

--------------------------------------

If anyone is still getting an error with windows update after the cmd trick + deleting the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, use the fix that ashylarry posted earlier in the thread:

For me the Windows Update Fixit worked. After that run the cmd thing and you are good to go.

Edit: If you want to know that the files are getting downloaded, check the network activity in the task manager and look after svchost.exe

..and then repeat the process again with automatic updates enabled.
