Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Guys, I think something happened...

You can completely skip the CD key step, its not relevant for people who upgraded and have an associated windows 10 activation.

Microsoft is giving everyone the same keys dependent on version of Windows 10, they don't show it to you. It is hidden in the system and can be found, but it is not needed.

Hm, from what I read on Reddit, if you did the fresh install by not using the reset function, they had to use the generic key to activate.

The far right of the date and time is actually a button that you can use to quickly get back to the desktop.

If you dont mind me bothering you, I have 3 files that showed up in the download file.

Still no Win10 downloading.

Do I try again? How many more things do I need under downloads and what do I do next?

So how are you guys like the new MS Edge browser?

Like the new Internet Explorer, I tried it for a bit, but I just went straight back to Chrome. The problem Microsoft will have in the 'Browser Wars' is the ecosystem that each provides.

Google Chrome has everything I do synced up to my phone, so it's a given that I will go back to it.

Before you try to force it, make sure you've installed your regular windows 7 or 8 updates. Then empty the folder, try again, taking care that you run the command prompt as an admin.

Edge is still in its infancy. Great for fast browsing but little else at this point. I do love how it handles searches and Cortana integration, as well as its reading mode, but it won't replace Chrome for me until it has profile sync and extensions.

Yeah, I checked the Lastpass forums and it seems that they're just waiting for Edge to be released since extensions were not allowed before. Hopefully they make a Lastpass extension soon since I really don't want to use Firefox. I did find that Internet Explorer 11 is still in, just hidden.

Still I want for Edge to clear its browsing history and cache whenever it is closed. That's why I never used Chrome (I know it can be added through extensions).

Windows 8 bright and cheery
Windows 10 dark and dreary

Whats with the lack of backgrounds? And the ones that are there all suck.

The backgrounds that ship with OSX or a Chromebook are so much freakin better than MS's attempts. I don't get it.

So to prepare my laptop for Windows 10, I decided to download the latest nvidia driver (my card is a GeForce 310m) and according to the site, the latest driver is 341.74 (came out today).

But now when I boot up my computer, the Windows logo comes up, and then a black screen.

HOW DO I FIX THIS!?

Upgraded this morning, first impressions are very positive. Nice to have the Start menu back, and I like the graphical changes. The upgrade process was nice and simple, too. Windows 10 seems to be a keeper.

How do I check that my W10 install is authentic (as it should be, since my W7 install was)?

Do you have a second screen connected? Might be using that one as the primary screen.

Edge will work with Chrome extensions this fall, maybe it'll then be able to sync everything through Edge?

Man, moving from the preview version to the full version was incredibly smooth. Woke up to my lock screen and that was it, didn't have to do anything.

Anyway I really like Windows 10 overall going by the few weeks I've used it. Good mix of old and new. Having some issues with the search functionality and customizing the start menu but everything else has been good. Even the Windows apps which I ignored almost completely in 8 seem faster and better integrated here. Still haven't messed with Edge much though, hard to pull away from Chrome.

So I installed Windows 10 Pro N from Windows 8.1 Pro N but I can not find the Windows Media Player installer for Windows 10? I need it to play some of my games :/

They are phasing out WMP and replacing it with some W10 app I believe.

Does everyone get it today, or are they sending it out in waves on different days?

Waves, no telling how long. You can trick it into giving it to you now if you want.

Anybody else having trouble with Waterfox? It is so unresponsive now. Otherwise I think I can get used to this, just will take a couple days to get used to it.

How are you guys using the iso to clean install? I had it burned to a disc and I boot from the disc I get to the install options, I highlight my main drive to format it and I get an error it won't let me format the drive to do a clean install. Am I doing something wrong?

What do you mean you can't activate...? Does it ask for a key? My upgrade just went through without anything like that.
It says it's not activated and just gives an error. I can't even change the damn key. I have boxed copies of 7 and 8 sitting in front of me that I originally used.

I don't even know what to do. USB is fucked, second GFX adapter isn't working, Windows won't activate, it's a huge mess. I just want to do a fucking clean install but I can't even do that.

So what do you do with this Windows.old folder? I've already moved my Steam folder and now it's just sitting there...

Yes, everything has been updated. Ill delete the files again, and try again. Thanks

Are they? Right click start, control panel. Two clicks away, full classic functionality. How is that trying to kill anything?

That's not "Classic." Unless you were born after Windows XP.

Come back when Microsoft gives the REAL classic control panel from 9x. :p

Trying to update from 8.1 using the Media Creation Tool and it's just closing during 'creating media'. No error, the setup just vanishes. Anyone come across this?

Why do you even want to do this? Just use the media creation tool to upgrade your existing install to W10 (you don't have to create an ISO), and then once that's done you can reset it to get rid of all your old junk.

Does their recovery truly make it a clean install as in gets rid of everything?

Hmm, yes, I'm getting that too. But what are you gonna change to key to? You can't use a W7/8 key with W10, AFAIK...?

It says it will delete everything and reinstall Windows, and then lets you choose whether you want it to delete everything on the drive or just everything on your system partition. I'm right in the middle of that process right now, we'll see how it ends up.

at this point MS really just needs to release a bloody installer. That media tool wouldn't work with either of my USB drives (couldn't find one, the other 'something happened' halfway through). Trying it on each of my machines for in-place installs didn't work. deleting those folders only worked on one of my machines. Still trying on my tablet.

Just a simple download. Please MS

Run Disk Cleanup, then choose "Clean up system files". After that, it'll give you the option to get rid of that folder.

But keep in mind you won't be able to restore to your previous OS if you do so.

Finally succeed at forcing the update:

1) Deleted the "C:\$Windows.~BT" folder and the content of the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder.

2) Refreshed Windows Update and installed an small ~100KB Windows Defender package.

3) Entered the command "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" in the cmd.exe as an Administrator.

Hopefully the rest of the process will go smoothly.

But it IS an installer. You can choose to upgrade your install right from the tool, you don't have to create USB/DVD boot media.

EDIT: Ok, guess that didn't work for you? That's annoying then.
