Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I'm glad i decided to jump in early, i joined the insider program a month and ago and it seems I got a smoother upgrade to W10 than a lot of people in here getting the final release version :D.

Yeah, I installed 10240 on Monday and it worked perfectly; installed perfectly, activated right away, and carried everything over without any issues. :D

It just says Windows 8.1 - no home or pro specification.

Probably Home edition. When I was running Windows 8.1 (Pro) it said Windows 8.1 Pro.

Isn't letting me download anything from store. Fails when acquiring a license?

Also, I enabled fast startup. How do I turn it off? Just press start button then shut down? Or will that initiate a proper shutdown and not the hybrid?

ok, back to square one, i'll just do the fresh 8.1 install and wait for the upgrade.

cba to waste my free Win 10 key (via dreamspark) just because it won't activate my forcefully updated 8.1 -> 10

Used the download tool and upgraded without a hitch and key was activated.
Reset to run a clean install and now under system settings - windows activation it reads connect to the internet to activate windows.
It's gonna pester me to enter a serial key now isn't it and I didn't jot it down.

anyone else having this issue? The internet is fine on my end so I assume it's just servers being wonky but now i'm paranoid :/

Yeah, I'm also getting that.

Yep...

EDIT: I'm starting to think this is because I didn't wait for Windows Update to do its thing. So... am I screwed?

Yay all upgraded and lovely.

But why does Win10 think my OneDrive folder is called SkyDrive. It's bizarre, half the places it's referred to as one thing, half the other. I can inspect the folder and properties will use different names in different tabs!

Desktop users, remember to check the (motherboard) manufacturer's website to update to the Windows 10 version of certain drivers (5.1 DTS Interactive wouldn't work until I upgraded for example).

yeah, im also getting the activation issues, connected to PC but won't activate

Did you use the media creation tool? I'm starting to think that's the issue. Perhaps you HAVE TO wait for Windows Update to do its thing to get a working W10 license. Shit.

Upgraded from Windows 7 from the website rather than the icon from taskbar.

I can't activate my key. Keeps saying try again later.

So the installation files are sitting on my HDD since morning, and the GWX app changed from "you have reserved Windows 10" to this:

Am I stuck until Microsoft's "partners" get around this? This isn't even a pre-built PC.I kinda want to try the "deleting everything inside Download folder" method, but I don't want to risk downloading everything again. Maybe it won't since it's all on Windows~BT folder already?

Edit: I did it anyway, and Windows Update is downloading it all again. Oh well, waiting a few hours is better that not knowing how long at all.

Getting the same message... I built this machine... -_-

i'm in the same boat

"Error description:
The Software Licensing Service reported that the license could not be found or was invalid"

sounds like the key it "generated" during the upgrade (the last 5 characters it shows in "System" are not my Win 8 key) hasn't been properly activated beforehand.

i'm about to do a fresh install of 8.0 i guess

edit: then again, wouldn't the fact that it DID create a key for me pretty much mean that my version's legit?

So maybe I'm missing it, but I'm not finding a download Windows 10 button anywhere. My Window's 10 app still looks that same as when I first reserved my copy. Is there something I'm not doing right? I updated everything that was in the update folder but still no Windows 10. I'm on Windows 8.1.

From the past few posts thats the impression I'm getting as well. I jumped in a wekk early and no problems so far outside of the Nvidia driver fuckery a week ago.

My only concern with xbox streaming was latency but I was doing pretty much the same things in online games as before, if not better. Very surprised in that regard but the image quality is not too hot.

My install errors out at 20% with the wonderful 'something happened' message. The logs are complaining about some component in the Sources directory called SafeOS being missing. This happens with both the version downloaded via Windows Update and the USB installer.

I'm going to do a fresh install of 8.1 this weekend, update it and then do the upgrade after that. That will also give me time to find out whether my company's VPN software supports Windows 10 yet.

Downloading now via the tool (Windows Update showed nothing). So I'll upgrade my current 8.1, and then do a refresh to get a clean install. So far, so good.

But if I get a new pc, how do I install Windows 10 there? I understood my retail Windows 8 key would give me a retail Windows 10 license. But I won't actually get a Windows 10 key. How will this work?

I'm satisfied so far. The only crash I had was due to an incompatible program version and I already fixed that. I had no trouble with my AMD drivers and have been playing games fine so far. Getting used to the functionality and the different apps, right now.

I basically had 1 issue during the insider preview, when i went from 1 build to another my settings app got messed up big time so i couldn't access any settings in the entire OS - i had to right click on the restart button (after being told how to get the recovery menu without the settings) and rolled back to the older build and upgraded back again, that took less than 1 hour and was amazingly simple.

All in all, the past month has been pretty great for testing the OS out, and seeing all the issues now really makes me glad i upgraded earlier.

How did you get your key to begin with? I never got one.

So, I reset my PC via the troubleshooting tools and apparently it took Windows.old with it. Any way I can get the files back or am I screwed?

The tool on the microsoft website? Yeah I did

Seems like everyone who did that is having this issue. Maybe it just doesn't work to upgrade that way. I mean, it works, but you don't get a valid license. Sucks! Gonna have to try to get back to W7 I guess (I wonder if it left my system restore partition intact) and then hope I get it through Windows Update instead.

Speaking personally, this roll out has been a disaster. I have four machines waiting, all fully up to date, and not one of them doesn't have some issue or another, and no issue is consistent with the others.

So I have been stuck at reset thing this pc 99% for like half hour. Used the recovery thing to do a clean install from Windows 10 not sure what to do as I doubt it would take this long think something went wrong.

It'll work. Otherwise why would Microsoft have it on their site?

Their activation servers are being hammered, just be patient.
