Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

You know, not being able to drag a window using the gigantic new title bar is annoying as fuck. So you have go guess where the "old" title bar is.

And what is it with edge and hiding the location bar? Holy shit, W10 is just annoyance after annoyance.

Just because it actually makes you change the background doesn't mean there isn't more it is doing that you're not aware of. I would certainly not recommend running an exe to change a login background. Especially not if my AV considers it to be an infected file.

its just replicating older apps like tweaks logon changer for windows 7 and 8. its a visual app with the code on github. im comfortable using it to change my logon screen and then deleting it.

i think you could even download the project and compile it yourself.

When I lock my screen (Start -> Click your username -> Lock), the lock screen has the on-screen keyboard visible by default. If I start typing using an actual keyboard it goes away. Just waiting, it doesn't. Is there any way to make this not happen? I am find with permanently and completely disabling on-screen keyboards if that's what's required. I am guessing that this is Tablet Cruft?

Update: This seems to only replicate in a Remote Desktop session, not in a local session. Wonder initiating a lock is sending some kind of session data that's causing the OSD stuff to come up?

Yeah... I've been on the upgrade all day long and it's not really that smooth. Jerks too much. I'm going to do a clean install and see if that helps.

Running smoothly so far.

How do I stop updates from updating? On 10.1 Pro. I opened windows update and it was all like "preparing to install" with no way to stop them. Two of them being video driver updates. Lol. Windows update sucks at updating Intel and AMD drivers, to say the least

I don't know if it's the same problem. But there was some issueI had with Windows 8.1 not being able to download stuff from the store. I also found out that Windows Update was failing to communicate with the server. I ran the MS update fix tool and it fixed both problems. Although I had to restart and run it several times for some reason it did work in the end. I was just thinking if Windows Update can't find the server it may be a similar issue.

Ah ok thank you! I can't even access the store, so might give that a try. I'm not missing anything of importance so far tho.

You should be able to re-enter your previous version of windows code.

Or.

Buy it.....
I had tried entering it but it wouldn't take it. I'm going to try reinstalling windows 7, trying the upgrade process again and seeing if it works. I had legit 7 pro I don't know why I can't just enter the key somewhere in windows 10 and have it know.

Ok I have a question.

I have 2 computers that I'm going to upgrade to Windows 10.

One is running 7 and the other 8.1.

I have a Microsoft account that I made for my Xbox live gamertag.

I haven't linked this account to my 8.1 pc since I just built it recently and plan to link it when I get Windows 10.

What I'm wondering is can I link that account to both computers once I upgrade them to 10?

Or should I make a second account?

Windows 10 upgraded perfectly on my custom PC, not so much on my wife's new HP Phoenix Envy 850. None of the 'Settings' windows would load at all (anything related to ImmersiveControlPanel would load at all), even with a fresh Recovery install it was just a broken mess. Only a pure erase with Windows 10 Recovery Media made from my PC (after making sure the activation from the upgrade on her PC went through) fixed the issue. I think I'll opt not to install any HP crapware. One minor annoyance is that now her PC is saying that Windows 10 is not activated because the product key is blocked, but I saw a post from Microsoft showing that will fix itself.

Welp, finally made the complete jump to Windows 10.

Apart from being an itsy-bit slower in some loading times (no surprise, laptop's 5 years old), and my Dolby drivers getting whacked from existence apparently, everything is working out so far.

Anyone else mess with Game DVR yet? It's recording video flawlessly but I can't figure out how to make it record audio (and yes, I set "Record Audio" to on in the Xbox App).

alright, here's the other issue im having:

my images are not previewing anywhere. not on the big icon and not on the preview window

they open and show fine when I double click on them

any idea?

Did you type them in search?

first thing I did

I'm having a issue where it gets to installing and I get some modem error message and then the installer crashes. Happened 3 times now.

I have neither. odd

they dont seem to be apps to download either

what do. wanna paste a screencap of another issue im having, lol
Sorry if this comes across as a dumb question, so please don't take offense.
Have you tried typing in just "paint" in the search, instead of "ms paint" because when i just type paint it comes up.

Ok so I've figured out how to win the war with Nvidia drivers.

Windows 10 will install. Basically if you get the black screen with the mouse hit windows enter to turn on narrator. From there follow it's command to proceed with setup. You're working blind.

From there once it's set up and you're done it will eventually restart a final time and show one of the 2 desktop screens. Even if you only have one monitor set up it's setting up a duel display. From there if you have an Nvidia link on your desktop or any program you can drag it from the left screen by going off the left side to the right screen which is what the display is. Then snap it to the left after opening display settings etc and when you do windows 10 will show you grid of other open windows. From there click the one you want to open on the other half the screen. Make sure you pick your display settings. From there disable monitor 2 and have it display everyone on monitor 1 and bam you have a functioning windows 10.

The "Most used" section of the Start menu is just silly. I want to know exactly where my shortcuts are, rather than needing to find them in a list that might be ordered differently every time I look at it. So I pin my shortcuts on the right side of the menu, but that means they no longer show up in the "Most used" section. The net result is that my "Most used" section is actually a "Most used but not pinned" section, which is lame. So it populates with a bunch of garbage I rarely use.

So just to make sure before I go through with this, upgrading doesn't delete any files already saved for me right?

Mainly concerned about Microsoft word documents.

Yeah, should not be a problem.

C is your system drive/partition? The registry entries about those programs should be there, so in that case it should be fine to just remove that entire folder on D.

Yeah, C is my SSD/Windows drive while I install everything to my HDD D drive.

Just to be sure, you want to wipe your drive completely and do a clean install? You got any other drives?

Just the D:\ drive where I store my music and stuff. I don't want to wipe that, just the programs.

Mine is working flawlessly.

Wow then I have no idea what is going, it is actually impossible to use for me. It's just a frozen screen for me with the only way to update the screen is to minimize and bring it back up. Waterfox is running better but there is still some lag. :(

Use Firefox Sync or backup your bookmarks by exporting them and then delete the profile(s) in AppData. Fixed it for me.

Just finished my clean install and gotta say, this is slick as hell. Edge runs pretty good too. I still have games to check out to see how they work now. Any other recommendations on a fresh install?
