Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

The USB media is terrible, haven't had success with it yet on a few machines. The "upgrade now" option works, but has to download all 3gb each time.

So my fresh install of win 10 refuses to sleep automatically. If I click on Sleep, its fine. Won't wake up till I move the mouse. But it won't do it automatically. I have it set to sleep after 20 mins in Power options. Disabled wake on LAN.

Anyone having any issues with that?

For tablets? No, no it really is not. Tablet mode, navigation, and touch functions are a hot mess. The pendulum has swung back to the desktop side - perhaps for the best - but they gutted a whole lot of the good functions of Windows 8.1 for tablet users. (Edit: Read the entire article with updates, not just the January 2015 OP.)
I'm not gonna go point by point over the article cause I'm on my phone atm. But that guy is having a ton of issues that I have not experienced on my yoga 2. The installation process is also just as painless as on my desktop.

trying to force an update but i keep getting this when I try to upgrade my PC:

Any ideas? The option for creating a bootable USB worked no problem.

Don't use that tool. Do this instead:

Why on earth did Microsoft think it was a good idea to have this media creation tool and not just outright offer an ISO for download? The entire purpose of the media creation tool is to create an ISO or use it to burn a DVD or copy onto a USB, all of which can be done by Rufus.

In fact, that's just what I did. I used that stupid tool to create an ISO then used Rufus to create a bootable USB. Worked flawlessly.

Trying to launch the media creation tool and I'm just getting, "Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot your PC and try running Windows 10 setup again." Of course, rebooting does nothing.

I should I read up on this more.

I spent forever updating my Windows 7 box (hadn't done so in months), finally managed to get the Windows 10 app thing to show up...

Now I'm on some waiting list to download or update or whatever? Wut?

Yes, by default they are rolling it out in stages. You'll get another notification when you are ready to install.

However, if you are impatient, you can just force the install now. There are lots of articles and posts in this thread on how to do that if you want.

Reinstalled nVidia drivers and everythings showing now.
Just wish I could figure out why the tiles wont work properly in the start menu.
Sick of having to restart just to get some to appear and some to remove.

Thought it was the nVidia drivers but its not.

So I updated via the ISO image, did the Keep Nothing option since I wanted a clean install and everything went through fine, but it kept all my old files and such. It just moved it to Windows.old.

Do I need to do the update again?

that is normal. If you want to format you need to do it through the bootable image

you can just do disk cleanup to remove windows.old though

Windows 10 has been a complete let down for me. I have a Sony Vaio from 2013 that works flawlessly on Windows 8, but once I updated to Windows 10, the sound became super distorted, the touchpad failed to register right clicks or two finger scrolling, and text looks blurry.

It honestly feels like I downloaded a beta. Considering how long this OS was in insider preview, I wondering just what they fixed in this timespan. Big disappointment for me. I don't see why my (relatively) new laptop is having so many issues.

Assuming you mean OneDrive, but what setting is that? I would definitely disable that if it exists

It lets you go to OneDrive.com and access any file on any of your computers.

To disable it, right-click the OneDrive notification icon and go to Settings.

It's actually a pretty awesome feature. I'll get some use out of it when I'm at school on my laptop and need something on my desktop.

So the taskbar is stuck on both of my monitors? Can't find the setting for it like in Win7.

The setting is right where it was in Windows 8. Right-click the taskbar and go to Properties. It's called "Show taskbar on all displays".

Win 10 has been a big success for me, upgrading from 8.1 Not a single problem. I was scared I would run into a lot of driver problems, particularly for my sound card and GPU, but nope.

I'm annoyed by the ad-tracking and microsoft wanting to use my PC as a bittorrent client to seed windows updates to other computers... but there are settings to disable a lot of those things, so I can't be bothered to be too upset about it.

I do miss the charm bar though. it made it super easy and fast to enable/disable my secondary monitor. Now there seems to be no quick way to do that. You have to open up the Display Properties settings window to do it

What sound card do you have? My PC has pretty standard parts but I was wondering if my Soundblaster Z was possibly holding up my upgrade notification.

Everything you describe sounds like driver issues. Check the Sony/Vaio page for driver updates or try reinstalling them again.

Awesome, thanks. Was already disabled. I could definitely use that feature, but I don't want it through OneDrive as they have dubious privacy practices.

I asked this earlier and got no response. Is anyone having issues with their monitor not going into sleep mode at the desired time set in power options? I had no problems with this in 8.1 with my monitor going into sleep mode. Doesn't seem to be working for me in Windows 10. I even tried to set a screensaver to start with 1 minute of idle time and it isn't working. This happened on an upgrade install and a fresh install.

Just wanted to quote myself to let people know that I found out what the issue was in case anyone else has this problem. For some reason, charging my DS4 via my desktop was preventing my PC from believing it was idle. This wasn't a problem on 8.1, but is for 10 for whatever reason.

So, upgrading Windows now.

If I want to do a clean install I have to do it after the upgrade, correct? (Not at some point in this upgrade process?)

Also, I have an SSD and an HDD. Windows is on the SSD. All my SSD data is already copied onto the HDD. If I do a clean install it will only wipe the SSD and not the HDD, correct? Specifically what do I need to select to ensure my HDD is safe?

It should only wipe the C drive. But unplug the other HDD just to be safe.

I'm not sure if this was a problem for anyone. I'd imagine a lot of people here would already do this, but I'm going to add this anyways.

I had a problem with my intel r ethernet connection i218 v network adapter after upgrading, and couldn't connect to the internet. To fix it, I just downloaded driver from below on another computer, but it on a flash drive, and ran it on my upgraded computer. Solved the problem easy.

So.. there's that.

That was luckily my only problem so far, and otherwise, I've been really enjoying my experience. Everything looks so simple and clean.

I'm having the same experience as you, no problems so far.

The only issue I've had is with my soundcard, Creative are dragging their feet and won't have a working Windows 10 driver for my card until OCTOBER! Luckily, a guy on the forum fixed it on the toilet during a smoke break. Everything else works the same as 8.1, if not slightly better. Overall I like it, but it needs work, especially the start menu which is my biggest complaint, the fact you can't resize it fully is madness, there's so much wasted space, as there is on the left side as well as you can't pin shortcuts.

I can't get this to work on my gaming PC for my life. Windows 10 just doesn't want to install for some reason. At least I got it to work on my laptop, which is my productivity workhorse. Maybe I should just install SteamOS on my gaming PC.

My laptop takes 10 to 15 seconds to get in or out of sleep mode. Sucks since it was almost instant with 8.1.

Need some help please :(. None of my MS apps seem to work anymore. MS Edge, add new accounts, xbox app, nothing like that. They open but when it comes to performing an action (going to a website in edge or adding a new account) nothing happens. It just sits there like I didnt click anything. Xbox app wont sign me in but when i try to add a new account...nothing. Any suggestions?

Anybody having problems redeeming the Minecraft Windows 10 version?
I get this error code on my windows account page:

fuck, my graphic cards don't work anymore.

Can't install the latest intel and nvidia drivers....

The nvidia installation tells me i need to install an intel driver.

And the intel installation tells me my setup can't have the latest intel driver.

I have a t420 from lenovo....

halp!

Is anyone else having issues with their wifi connection dropping a lot? After upgrading it seems like my connection is dropping all the time. It says I'm "connected" but I can't connect to the internet, while all my other devices are fine.

wow, connected with some moron at Windows tech support. They tell me clean installs are impossible (even after you upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10) lol. So now I have to go back to Windows 8.1 and then upgrade again in order to get Windows 10. I know that dude was being misleading but he stonewalled on it.

Pirating this would have been less of a hassle tbh lol.

Why are you calling him a moron? Anyone here could have told you it wasn't possible and that you just need to do a clean reset afterwards. You don't even have a Win 10 key.

It authenticates through your hardware though? I upgraded it from 8.1 to 10 and it activated. After that a clean install should authenticate automatically, no?

Friend of mine downloaded it and his TouchPad doesn't work anymore. There's no driver for it for Windows 10.

Shouldn't everything that work on 8 still work on 10? Pathetic.
